Tony didn't want his money back. He wanted his rails fixed. Giving back the money doesn't fix his rails. And it doesn't fix your reputation.

Before I sent Tony his money back by Walmart moneygram, I asked him if he was sure he wanted to go this route, he assured me that he did, So, I sent the money back and Tuesday I'll have someone from Diamond box up his rails and ship them back to him, and yes, I'll even pay the shipping back...no problem as I still can't get to his rails yet to work on them, seeing's how I'm in Brookings, SD heading to Sioux Falls, SD next, then on to Iowa, MN, WI and my last stop is in Northern Indiana for my last 9ft ProAm install downstairs with a steel plate joined 3 piece slate that I steel plated before I left the factory.

After getting back to the factory I still wouldn't have time to work on them as I'll be turning right around and leaving again for WY, MT, WA, and Alaska. So, sometimes that's just the way it works out...not having any time at all to do anything else.

A pool table assembly/repairman is not a mechanic. It is like when a garbage man is called a sanitation engineer. If all you did was coin operated ball return tables that still wouldn't be a mechanic. Closer, but not a mechanic.

This has been an interesting thread. Post 135 mentions the OP's table was never set up and I wonder if that means it was in storage. I wonder who he will get to set up the table when he gets his rails and end caps back. OP keep us posted. RKC you spend a lot of time on the road and I wish you a safe journey. JJ

Tony is going to set it up, as I've gone through the whole process of doing that with him already, but if he has any questions, or runs into something that he's not sure about, he'll call me and I'll talk him through it.

You told him his rails would be done and back to him 2 months ago, all the while holding his coin. ALL HE WANTED WAS HIS RAILS FIXED TWO MONTHS AGO LIKE YOU PROMISED. how hard is that for you to understand?

A Billiard table technician it is. We have a table at our machine shop that we have serviced,and like any good bunch of nerdy machine shop guys we have asked questions and watched the process over the years (20), and while it seems to us that you have to know what you are doing it is not rocket science. So why cant all these people have a regular experienced tech work on the table. They seem pretty easy to find, are there that many bad tech's or is it just case of having the name attached with the work. Like when people pay 5000 for a 1500 cue.

Then why did you tell him he'd have them two months ago and not reply to his questions? If you had been honest he could have shipped the rails to Donny, Zach, Mark, or a number of other guys that could do the same work and had them a couple months ago. there is no excuse for dishonesty. This thread wouldn't have ever started had you been honest anytime during the three on this you had his rails.

I thought I could squeeze them in my schedule. I wanted to come through for this guy,and did not know when to give up because that is not in me. I should of sent his rails out to someone I could trust because I could not take care of him like I promised. This will be a lesson to me. I take full responsibility. There is no excuse for this poor treatment. It will never happen again because the customer is always right, and his happiness is the only thing that matters.

This is almost an unwinnable point as valid as it is. Hardcore billiard guys want that extra .0001%. That slightly better tolerance for anything billiard related matters to a lot of hardcore enthusiasts. Even if they can't tell. They will defend it.

I've probably installed/worked on/refelted 10k tables and you're right its not rocket science.

There's certainly a difference between a guy who delivers tables, a journeyman like mechanic that knows more about the intricacies of the table and someone like RKC who takes the craft to a more exacting, mathematical process.

The difference between a talented skilled mechanic and RKC borderlines on negligible but there is a difference and an extremely discerning customer can tell.

However its not something that can't be duplicated, its just not necessary 99% of the time.

Then partner that with the enthusiasm billiard guys have for exacting methods. Your example is comparable. 1k cues for 5k based on name recognition and reputation.

For the sake of offering an analogy and not to mock the process but some people like knowing that each screw is turned exactly 12 times onto a bolt that was threaded to accept exactly 12 turns. Then leveled to near perfection .00001 standards.

Can normal people tell? Nope.

Does that kind of exacting math matter? To some.

But the whole idea that he's the only one who can do it? Is fantasy, there's nothing proprietary about what he does. He does something that most mechanics find unnecessary but enthusiasts love.

But this thread isn't about his ability. Even I don't question that. He's good at what he does. He just doesn't treat his customers well/equally.

The deal is made, that's what Tony asked for, so that's what I agreed to. As far as shipping the rails to someone else to do the work, what makes you think anyone else was going to match the price I offered Tony in order to try and help him out????

Glen, I didn't get ran out at all. I had numerous PMs thanking me for calling you out. You've ran off most of the great mechanics on there with your ego. The deal is made?!?!? Tony made a deal in FEBRUARY, and you weren't honest enough to keep it. I'm sure Tony is like me, we'd have chosen another mechanic had we known the options now.

You forced Tony to ask for that. That wasn't his first choice. You should have paid the difference to have someone else do it and learned from your mistake. Instead you just continue to be self righteous. It's pretty sad.

I understand. Fasteners are torqued to a spec. 2lb, 10lb whatever. If that spec is met then it does it matter who turns the wrench, no. Could someone tell the difference between 3lb 2oz and 3lb 1.2oz of torque, no. And like Cobra said, not a mechanic billiard table technician.

Tony made a deal in FEBRUARY, and you weren't honest enough to keep it. I'm sure Tony is like me, we'd have chosen another mechanic had we known the options now.

Glen, for heaven's sake, quit digging. He put a thread on here a few days before he called you out saying he had a Gandy without rails for sale because the guy that had his rails was unresponsive. So what exactly were you doing to help him set up his table then? If you had been honest and told him "I can't get to it, but here are the guys that can do the rails"' he would have been playing pool in the table he saved up for two months ago.

To play well and function most tables require minimal precision. Now, most of us can tell when rails aren't straight, one pocket is bigger, someone tightened the rail cloth too tight in the middle of the rail, Simonis is wavy, etc.

Think of it as good, better, best.

Basic installation, Quality installation, Precision Hand Fitted to Exacting Mathematical Consistencies.

Most people can tell a basic installation from a quality one. Few can tell between a good install and one mathematically square and exact.

So I agreed to do the job if rebuilding his rails at a very...VERY....VERY low price in order to try and help him out...GOT THAT?...My timing didn't work out because of the backlog of work I had waiting for me at the Diamond factory....so, SORRY IT DIDN'T all go as PLANNED!!! And guess what azzhole, I still don't have the time...in fact, I'm not even at the factory right now where his rails are....HAVE YOU READ THAT IN MY POSTS YET...I'M IN SOUTH DAKOTA!!! So, after talking with Tony on the phone about his rails and money, he decided he just wanted his money back and the rails....so, no problem, I already sent his money back to him...he has it in HAND, the rails will ship back next week....I'M DONE!!!
