Rite of passage or just an immature jerk?

Ok, after well over 20 years of playing pool, for the first time, it finally happened. I got so frustrated with my game that I snapped my cue in half. Here's what I took away from the experience:
1) 3 seconds of pure joy, bliss & satisfaction
2) a second after that, I immediately regretted it
3) a feeling of humiliation and embarrassment
4) I lost my match
5) I'm out a couple of hundred dollars

I consider it a rite of passage. My wife considers me an immature jerk. Hmmm upon reflection, she may be right.

What do you mean "may be right"? She is right. Take it from an expert on the subject (in therapy though) :embarrassed2:!

Every time I begin to even consider doing something like that I quickly remind myself just how much I paid for that cue. The replacement cost and time invested always change my mind.
Rite of passage is the first time you get hustled or the first time you find yourself using pool terms at work, this was that other thing

When I have gotten that frustrated the most I've done is remove my hat and whip it against the wall. Had a guy break a Joey Gold at our hall once though.
Try buying an expensive cue next time. Your wallet may stop you from doing it again.

I did that about a year ago, I was so frustrated with my game and the guy I was playing I just snapped and broke my cue; I was out of an expensive cue, my girlfriend told me she was embarrassed for me. I had already been told its not worth it, and seen several people do it and I have always thought they were idiots, but; I wouldn't change that night if I could do it again, it completely changed my perspective on the game, my mentality. I learned it's not my cues fault when I play like crap, it's never right to mistreat your equipment, and I promised myself I would never do something like that again. I went ahead and bought me and even more expensive cue, a year later and there's not even the slightest of scratches on it :)

I guess this makes it unanimous, the wife is right! Now the move is to do something with her or for her to prove you're not an immature jerk. Turn this mess into a win--win. ;)

Do it once and give yourself a reason to get a new cue precisely the way you want it. My suggestion is to keep the old broken cue and get a display case to exhibit it. Write a nice story how you decided to destroy it and make sure you embilish it. Frame everything for all to see ---- add photos if you have them.

I broke one in half a long time ago and wish I displayed it.

Immature Jerk!

Immature Jerk! FTW!

Your self inflicted, well deserved embarrassment and humiliation is your "rite of passage". Now only to be wise enough not to do it again.

Cheers.

what I do

I make a fist and punch down into the table rail hard. Dont worry, you wont hurt the table. The deep bruised knuckles will remind you for days of discomfort that you need to stay in control.

One roll on a table shouldnt make you see red. If it does, you have to remember why you even play the game. Maybe its not for the same reasons you started playing. Life is too short to waste doing something that makes you go crazy.

BTW I have never broken a cue, but have had 3 opponents do so. The last guy was the best. He threw it luke a javelin accross the room and caught the edge of a table on.the way down. Really an ackward situation.

Lol this game gets to everyone sometimes. Take comfort in this, a top pro once snapped his cue on the way home from a bad loss and then came back a couple years later and won a world championship :)

i think getting frustrated at pool is one of the processes that any pool player has to go through at one point. after that, you're supposed to become a better (and more chill) player.

sometimes the cue must pay. I killed a z2 and an ob2 giving the rails a love tap, it was just sort of inevitable for somebody with my mindset and maturity level. I never actually fully snapped a cue, but there's video of Johnny Archer killing one of his crucifix style, and Mike Sigel doing it walking cane style after a loss to a young John Schmidt.

if I ever go that far, I'm not going to feel bad. Sometimes the cue must pay.

When I was around 19 I used to get mad and bend my Meucci on the table in a nice u shape but the darn thing never would break.

I haven't gotten that mad about pool for at least 20 years plus I graduated to more expensive cues.

Let's not forget him either

I was playing 8- ball in leagues , and on a crucial shot (I had to hit a rail for the opposite left corner pocket), I pulled the shot ! I was soooo mad that I made such a fundamental error on a crucial shot that when I got up I put the cue over my knee. Well, long story short pretend was real. First and last time i'll ever do that.
Honestly, I think everyone has, or at least thought about doing it at one time or another.

I personally congratulate you. you have no idea how many times i've wanted to do that. or simply hurl the cue across the room

I understand the feeling completely. Damned near did the same thing today. Only realizing that my lousier than usual play was my fault prevented me from doing just that.

I honestly think that after today, I ought to take a few weeks away from pool...then give my cues and case to somebody more deserving. I turn 70 in a few months...age has indeed caught up with me!

Cues vs clubs

I have been a little ruff on a few of my cheaper cues, but not too bad. I have several expensive cues in which I'm very careful with. As for golf clubs, I've snapped several shafts before, but only a couple on porpose. Moral of the story is that golf can be more frustrating than pool and golf clubs are cheaper than custom cues.

I've never gotten to the point where I wanted to snap my cue. I guess it's because I have personal attachment to all of them. I've hit them lightly on the ground on the bumper, but usually the worst thing I'll do is unscrew the cue prematurely. It results in a better outcome than banging it or hitting it on the table. :)

I threw a piece a chalk the other night...no where near anyone or anything...I felt like a hugh a$$ afterwards. I've never been mad enough to break a cue...I've always wanted to have a couple cheapo 2 piece cues on hand, get made, break one, grab another, break it, grab another...just for the theatrics! :D
