Okay, T-minus 3 days and counting. Leaving Monday (4-25) with a friend for a 3 day "straight pool boot camp" with John Schmidt at his pool hall in Wheeling. Should be plenty of time for casual play in addition to the lessons.

I am positive that Jeanette Lee will be there that Wednesday (4-27) to give an exhibition in the evening (don't know what time).

Will probably return home Thursday evening.

Here is what I need to know:

Who on AZB is close enough to come over for some pool (or at least come Wednesday for the exhibition)???

What are the very best restaurants (specifically breakfast, lunch, dinner, late night "pool breakfast/bull session" places)?? Especially, are there any "not to miss" local flavor type places?

I hope some of the local AZ'ers will look me up, I'll be easy to find - my name is on my case.....damn, I better practice so I can play well enough to carry that fancy case....though Jack Justis assures me any opponent will be intimidated 2 balls worth just by looking at it...he could be wrong...

With a name like Williebetmore, there's no doubt that you can swing it. :yeah:

"Willie",
I'm about 45 minutes from John's pool room, just a little north of Washington, Pa. Sorry to say, I won't be able to attend. I spoke w/ JoeyA last week & relayed some of what's going on. My game has dropped off considerably & I won't be playing serious pool until sometime late summer, early fall.

That being said, one of the nicest places ANYWHERE is Oglebay. It's maybe 10 minutes from John's pool room. Here's a link.....

My wife & I used to make regular trips there. In fact, when I lived on the western side of Washington, it was only about 20 minutes from our house. We been there over 50 times & each time was awesome. You guys have to eat at the Ihlenfeld Dining Room in the Wilson Lodge. Incredible buffets each night & you do not have to be a guest to dine there. I guarantee you will be very satisfied. We usually stay there for a 3 day period every December, but you do not need to be a guest to visit anything in the park.

There's a place that I would NOT recommend & that's TJ's, near the Bob Evans & Hardee's. The food was not good & the atmosphere is chaotic & very loud. There's also a Hoss's Steakhouse. And of course, don't forget to try some of John's cuisine.

Please give John my best regards & as soon as I get well enough to play again, I hope to make weekly trips there & compete in his tournaments.

Have fun & I can't wait for your report on the goings on ala the "Reports from Williebetmore's Basement".

TA,
Many thanks, I believe we will most likely make use of your advice.

I grew up in Pittsburgh; and in high school we would drive down to Washington PA for meatball sandwichs at Jigs restaurant...in fact I believe I may have skipped a few afternoons of school just to get a meatball sandwich there...please don't tell anyone...

I wonder if Jigs is still there?

Amazing!

This is incredible! Jig's went out of business about, oh, 15-20 years ago or so. It later became the "Meadow Inn", as it was actually in Meadowlands, which is where I was born. The "Meadow Inn" is still there but just barely. The roof is falling in & the place is really run down. Anyway, one of the best best bar fights I was ever in anywhere was in Jig's when I worked for Chartiers Twp Police. EVERYBODY was fighting when we got there! Looked like a scene from a movie. It was one of the funnest bar fights I ever had! In fact, in the 29 yrs 10 months I spent in police work, that was my all-time 2nd best (or worst, depending on ones perspective) I ever ever had. One at the Muse Italian Club was just a tad more violent, but I digress....Normally a real nice & quiet place. I liked their fish sandwiches better than their meatball ones!

How uncanny is it that Dr "Betmore" ate in my little ol' home town! That anybody even knows anything about MeadowLands is kinda funny!

Thanks for the great memories!

Willie,

I live about 22 miles from Wheeling and will be at John's place on the 27th. Hope to run into you.

I've met Williebetmore.....He's cool as ice.

Note: he's been working on his game like a student at a university....You might want to think twice about playing him for money?

Hi Don...Still having fun, I see. Hope all is well.

Roger,
Very cool. I'm not sure of the hours of operation of John's establishment (I think we may be having lessons before the hall opens). I'm also not sure of the hours of the exhibition. In any case, try to get there early enough so we can have a good game of straight pool (it appears from your avatar that you have embraced 14.1 as the "championship game"...it is...).

If you let me know an approximate time, I'll look out for you and try to save some time.

Willie: Are you back yet? How did the straight pool boot camp go? Inquiring minds would love to know.

I snuck along on the adventure and without letting the cat out of the bag I will announce that John is more than just a straight shooter he has a ton of knowledge and not just 14.1 he is an extremely well rounded player. A trip to Wheeling is well worth the drive and West Virginia is pretty looking country. There are quite a few good local eateries including the S-Bridge steak sandwich. I ran a small number myself (23 and out) which was pretty cool. I have to work on my pocket speed stroke and kill shot. Good times were had by all.

Elvi, my man! You made the trip, too. Good for you.

Did you see some good 14.1 played. Was John giving 14.1 lessons or just playing and talking?
