After watching Rodney play in the finals and seeing many other great players in stroke ,playing at a healthy paced speed ,I am convinced that what Earl says about adding a shot clock is spot on !! When these so called champions mull ,sweat ,and fret over a shot that a 6-7 speed leauge player would just shoot ,the need for a shot clock is obvious. When players like Rodney Morris, Earl Strickland, and even players from the not so distant past like Jim Rempe and Jimmy Reid ,all had a very good speed of play and made the game alot more exiting to watch .I even know a couple of A+ to pro speed players into their 60's that still take no more than 30 secs per shot in 9 ball.I did want to be clear I am refering to rotation games ,not strait pool or one pocket here.Great win Rodney and that's how the game should be played ,it was beautiful to watch.:thumbup:
 
I agree the shot clock keeps the game interesting! I don't remember players back in the 70s and 80 taking as long as players do today to run a rack of 9ball, perhaps the equipment is more challenging to play on! :scratchhead::scratchhead:
 
I think its more about routine and conditions.Some guys have to look at everything for it to register in there brain and others slow play because most opponents get super pissed at guys that take so long and it throws there game for a shit.Tables with tighter pockets makes people slow down for sure.But even with a shot clock and a ball hanging over a hole if the guy or gal uses up the 45seconds to shoot it, is still a strategy and a piss off to most.Watching Parica play is a prime example of a guy who will act all upset when he might be off his shape by a micrometer and look at the ceiling,shake his head and lightly lean on his cue and give it a little bang ,take all day to shoot and runout.Don't get me wrong the man can play like a champ but I think slow play is a torture technique ,perfected by some,experienced by many!:smile:
 
For a race to 9, 2 hours were allotted for the matches. Not too many matches ran over that time limit, and if they did, the matches were close to being finished. So what may have been viewed on the live stream was not the norm for the tournament overall.

Mike Zuglan, the TD, stated that any slow play would not be tolerated and he would pull out a shot clock if necessary. I'm sure he concedes to the pro players somewhat, but he must have felt the tournament was on pace without having to crack down on some of the long gaps between shots that were witnessed.

You have a point , but in a few matches I have on video Rempe plays at a good pace. At the very least in any of the matches I have seen he never slow plays to wear out the other guy.
