RONNIE ALLEN vs. DANNY DILIBERTO - 1988 CHALLENGE MATCH

free bump for a mini-review:
I got the highlights video for lack of cash, and boy was it fun to watch. Its mostly the offensive shots, and the brilliant defense that set the runs up. The production is excellent, with good view of all the situations and execution of the shots. It was fun to see what is possible when a couple of the all-time best one-pocket players play their heart out.

If you are one the fence about buying this match, pull the trigger.

hi jay...

i woke up early and just watched the first game of 1-pocket (from the full set)... what a game!

dazzling...

and you still look exactly the same now as you did then!

Thanks Smokey. You know it's interesting and sad to watch these DVD's. I loved watching the match again, between two of my all time favorite players, but it is disconcerting to notice the passage of time. On one hand it doesn't seem so long ago. But on the other hand, we have all aged noticeably, and our skills diminished. And that includes me. ;)

you still look great.

and i'm still on Az so i didn't get to watch game 2 yet.

but, it is still great you kept the films from days-gone-bye. as they are wonderful to watch.

thanks for all you give our sport!

I bought the full set. Just arrived yestereday, and watched the 1st DVD. It was wonderful. Anybody that wants to see hours of Ronnie allen and Danny D. playing some classic 1 hole...buy this. Its well worth the 100 bucks for the set, or 30 bucks for the highlight reel...

I think if you bought the highlight dvd, you'd end up kicking yourself in the butt for not buying the whole set.

Mr. Helfert:
I ordered , received and viewed the edited version. Most enjoyable and highly recommended. Thanks again.

Hi Jay;

I've about finished the whole set. Thats some great action, and dialogue. I would say though, that I think Ronnie's game was a little on the downside. While he played very good, I have seen him play much much better in the 70's and early 80s. My guess, about 1.5 to 2.0 balls better.

I don't disagree with you there. I saw him at his peak in the 70's and early 80's. Even at 85-90% of his top speed, he was still a match for anyone, and maybe even the favorite. I staked Ronnie in the 1984 One Pocket tourney at Red's in Houston. 32 strong players in that field. Ronnie won that one beating Jeff Carter in the Finals. That may have been the tail end of his dominant days.

My guess is that the Ronnie of the 70's could have given this Ronnie (circa 1987) one ball, as in 8-7. What I like about these DVD's is you can still some some of his brilliance and creativity here. He just didn't run out quite as strong.

P.S. Only a few sets left.

Mayber your right...

I got DVDs and so far no problems so far. Ronnie seems so superior, I could relate to Danny quite a bit. I would have played the same shots etc. Ronnie plays different shots than I would fairly often.

Thanks Jay.

I have six sets left. They went fast. I've still got a lot of the edited version of the match, only two hours and forty minutes long. That's $30.

I'm on the 3rd DVD. What I like about the long version, is you really get to see two great players tackle eachothers differing styles over a long long match. He may be a ball or so from his peak, but Ronnie Allen is still a pleasure to watch. Its nice to look at the Robin 1-hole books while watching these Dvds, or in companion w/ them... there is a lot to be learned.

I was quite amused by the dialogue between the two. And is some cases the railbirds. They certainly didn't hold anything back. Great DVDs.

Listen. Anyone that likes one pocket at all and doesn't grab one of these sets is really missing out on a great opprotunity. MHO, Steve Price

I have exactly ONE set left. Five DVD's, ten hours of outstanding One Pocket by two of the best. RA may have been the best ever! XMas Special on this last set is $79.95 + $5 shipping.

First Paypal to jayhelfert@yahoo.com gets it.

If anyone would like the 3 hour edited version on one DVD, the special on it is $25, shipping included! This one has all the best shots, but leaves out everything between shots, like the conversation between the players, racking the balls, looking over the table, etc.

Danny is always telling me how you screwed him out of his part of this match with Allen, I see him alot down here in S FL, then again that's Danny, he's always looking for a way to get something for nothing. He owes more people more money then he'd like to remember.

??? Interesting post. Thanks for the compliment. To date Danny has received over $1,000 in royalties! He was supposed to get $5 per set sold, but we have way exceeded that. Ask him how much he owes me the next time you see him. I am the last person he should be badmouthing. Also you might want to ask him who helped him pay for his stomach surgery several years back. And who helped him out when his daughter was ill. Some people have a selective memory. I'm not happy about this post, and you can tell Danny that. He can call me and apologize if what you say is true. I just helped him out at the U.S. Open or did he forget about that too.

I can't decide if I want to leave this response on here or not. I almost wiped it out. I'm just angry to read crap like this.
