Ronnie O'Sullivan 1K Centuries - Contest!!!

Maybe something was making a noise that was bothering Ronnie.

I went back to the english commentary stream just so I could try to find out, and they mentioned something about photographers.

There was apparently a buzzing in the arena, couldn’t hear it on Eurosport, but the commentators could.

Luckily they manged to fix it!

Thanks for the update. Good to know they are only paying out now for an actual maximum.

I believe that was always the case, wasn’t it?

In recent times at least its only been for 147/155, it’s posisble it was different in the 80’s, but no-one tested it :-)

If I were in charge, any pair of balls in a free ball situation followed by an all-black clearance would be good enough. And a 17-black 155 would pay triple.

Seemed like Ronnie kind of gave away Frames 10 and 11 with misses and bad safeties. But he got one back in Frame 12 to tie it again.

Ronnie left a fairly long shot on a safety and Judd responded with a 54 but had no shot on a red and played safe. After a few safeties, Ronnie fouled on a red to take it to 58 for Judd. After a couple more safeties, Judd made a long, sharp cut on a red. 59. Ronnie left another long red for Judd; he potted it and finished off the frame. 7-7.

Race to 2.

Behind 5-29 after many innings, Ronnie shoots a l-o-n-g red and misses. Judd takes the frame from there.

Judd needs 1, Ronnie needs 2 in a row.

Judd breaks off.

Ronnie misses a decent opportunity on a red.

Running balls, Judd bashes the pile wide open on point 17 and continues on to 79 for the win. 9-7.

Well done, Judd Trump. You played better today in the frames I watched.

And Trump also played faster on average in the Finals than did O'Sullivan -- 22.1 sec. average shot time to 23.7 sec.

Note the constantly upward progression of Ronnie's ASTs in his 7 matches:

  • 14.0, 14.7, 16.7, 18.2, 19.0, 20.1, 23.7

Versus the alternating higher and lower pattern for Judd:

  • 18.9, 14.7, 18.6, 17.9, 20.5, 17.7, 22.1

He really did.

It should be evident to any fan of Ronnie's that he is at a disadvantage in longer races. This seems to be one of the few areas where age has caught up to him, and one of the main reasons he's unlikely to ever win another World Championship.

Of course, this is one of those times I would love to be wrong.

I recall watching a snooker tournament on the BBC way back (possibly the 80s but feels more like the 90s) and the question was asked. The official answer, as reported by the BBC team was that any break 147+ was considered a maximum for prize money purposes. My guess is nobody had thought of this and the powers that be had to think on their feet. Have never heard of any clarification on this since but 147 or 155 certainly makes sense.

Anyone wishing to follow the quest of Sir Ronnie, here is some good info.

At the bottom right, look for 100's.

Looks like last season (2017-18) was his highest ever in centuries and money! Not bad for an old guy.

And note that the count of 971 centuries they show apparently excludes any centuries that were made in 158 matches for which they do not have "frame scores" (click on "About this stat" under "Breaks").

So, if I am reading that correctly, it is highly likely that Ronnie passed the 1,000-century mark long ago!

[And, why does that "About this stat" message say 1,272 total matches, whereas the "Matches & Frames" section of the page says 1,238?]
