Ronnie O'Sullivan playing One-Pocket

Mr. O'Sullivan would have to convince the promoters (Barry Hearn, etc.) to televise one-pocket matches in order for it to become popular. I don't think it would pass Mr. Hearn's profit analysis regardless of who's playing it.

By-the-by, how well known are English pool players in the UK, such as Appleton, etal.?

I "highly" disagree!!!

One pocket requires "Excellent" commentary and "Pre" & "Post" production!!! It also must be accompanied by a ton of "Education" on the game and strategy. The audience "will" catch on and be amazed!

I took 5 to 10 minutes with my brother inlaw and educated him on the game. He watches some of my bigtruck videos and enjoys them. he can't run 5 balls. But, still likes and respects the skill and entertainment.

Ronnie and the video crew were at California Billiards in Fremont last Friday. I got to play him some eight ball -- well, I got to hold a stick for a while. He played a couple of games of one pocket with John Henderson and the crew did a fairly long interview with Bucktooth (Richard Cook) who was in Playing Off the Rail. Ronnie was very friendly and positive.

Ronnie vs. Efren 1pocket match on a snooker table, yummy!

Agreed, must happen.

Efren 12 - Ronnie 7 and all breaks (muhahahaha)
Ronnie would break himself into oblivion LOL

Hell, I'd play Ronnie even.
Gotta have a shot to be a shooter.

I agree. Ronnie could go on for years and do well in pool. With his talent and discipline

If Ronnie became seriously interested in one pocket, there are 2 things I could guarantee

1. It would become very popular in England
2. He would hold his own, and extend his career

Oddly enough, 1P on a snooker table, can be faster than on a pool table.. However, it is usually played with a shorter (10 or 6 ball) rack..First one to 5 or 3 wins..I actually think its a better game!

I have played, watched, and bet on a fair amount of one-hole on the two 5x10s at the
Rack in Detroit.......those two tables got the lion's share of the big action.

I have also played one-pocket on those tables with nine balls.....
...not sure how it would work playing with an even number of object balls.

We played a couple of games and went over the rules and some strategy and moves. He plays right handed and left handed equally well and seemed more interested in the power and more offensive aspects of one pocket than the defense. I know he was also meeting with Scott Frost a couple days after our session at California Billiards.

Sorry KD...As much as you and I may love the game, one pocket will never be a popular spectator game!.. Even those who know the game, will become extremely bored when an extended safety game (as most will become) is in play..As 95% of all spectators don't even understand any of its intricacies, the chances of it ever attracting sponsors, or becoming popular on a stream, or live TV, are absolutely ZERO %! :sorry: (it may have a prayer, if it were played with only 1 or 3 balls.)

PS..8ball or 10ball are the only games that have a chance of becoming somewhat popular, with the very small market who even watches any pool at all!

I'd say 9-Ball is the best game for tv (non call shot), it's quick and easy to follow.

10-Ball is good to watch for aficionados, but 9-Ball is better for the casual viewer.

8-Ball could become popular if Chinese tables become the norm, on standard US tables it's probably not an attractive enough prospect to compete with other disciplines.

(All in my opinion of course)

Game

To speed up the game only use 11 balls, rack like 10 ball and leave a ball on the head spot. The ball on head spot can not be shot after the break.
Race to 5 balls in your pocket.
Everything else is just as same a a standard game of 1pkt. Oh' and play it on 7' tables for TV, that speeds the game up and is action packed.

Does not matter what kind of cue you use against a living legend. Had a blast meeting and playing with him.

Yeah, sure....why don't you tell the truth....
...you got him gambling at one-hole and showed him things he never knew existed...

At least give the man a walking....er...flying stick.

9 balls destroys all games on tv, not even close

uk 8 ball with red/yellow balls is a close second for me

anything using a full rack of normal balls is really hard to view properly for me

call shot sucks on tv

9 ball really did get close to getting there imo as far as tv popularity, damn close
i recall the now defunct pbt tour having a decent espn contract although I believe all recorded never live

women's pbt had a nice espn run

matchroom sport too

I go back and forth on this. TV matches would be edited, so slow play, over-thinking, and protracted late game safety battles would be heavily condensed. The early and mid-game safeties are much more fan friendly--more caroms, pinball shots, kicks, multi-rail shots, etc. I think it could be into something fun to watch.

For those with short memories, Mike Sigel wisely advised Trudeau to go with 8ball, for his big $$$ IPT events!..That was as close as anyone has come, to making pool popular for the masses, or possibly attracting big name sponsors!..8ball was already the most recognized game ever played, much better known than 9 or 10ball, (to the masses) which by then, had morphed into safety contests! ..The IPT had every top player in the world, brushing up on their 8ball game!..It may well have succeeded too, had it not been for the untimely outlawing of internet gambling, and the dubious character of its creator both of which led to its early demise.:frown:

PS..Cory, please rethink your position on one pocket, as ever being accepted on live, sponsored TV!..And nobody wants to watch anything chopped up and edited, just to make it 'watchable'!..IMO, viewership would be completely in the toilet!

For players and real fans, you're right and the full matches could be made available online. But look at how golf is shown on TV. Watching the full 18 holes would have mountains of dead time, so they cut from group to group to fill the dead time, and mostly show the action. 1P could be done the same way, with resources. 1P does have more down time, but it also has more fancy shots than other games, so I see potential.

Dearest Duckbreath,

Sigel is/was a consummate businessman and you know it.

I watch NHRA drag racing action and they "chop up" and "edit" like crazy to make the dead time between races seem more important. If you have ever been to a drag race then you would know that the so-called "dead time" between races is when much of the action takes place, much like in ML baseball.

P.S. The English language would like you to return it's exclamation points:). What is up with that???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
