It's hard to argue with Ronnie O' on this one. MvG has taken home nearly £ 1.4 million so far this year. Forget about pool.

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN is not only the best Darts player in the modern era but he is the best sportsman around right now.

That’s the view of five-time World Snooker Champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, who lavished adulation upon Darts’ world number one following the Dutchman’s glorious World Grand Prix campaign in Dublin last week.

van Gerwen had a tournament average of almost 100 in the double-start format and surpassed that standard in his 5-2 final victory over Gary Anderson to eclipse Phil Taylor’s record for highest World Grand Prix final average.

His win follows 20 previous titles in 2016, including majors such as the Premier League, UK Open, Masters and World Matchplay.

And sporting legend O’Sullivan, himself widely regarded as the greatest Snooker player of the modern era and perhaps the greatest ever, believes that there is only one man currently competing that could challenge van Gerwen for the title of the best in sport.

“It’s very close between van Gerwen and Usain Bolt,” said O’Sullivan, who was runner-up in the European Masters at the weekend.

“Michael and Usain are the two top boys in any sport worldwide. van Gerwen is amazing. He’s unbelievable. I think he is the best sportsman on the planet of any sport and he’s even quicker than Usain Bolt.”

van Gerwen admitted O’Sullivan’s comments were overwhelming due to the respect he has for the Snooker star.

“It’s very nice to hear things like this, especially from a man like Ronnie O’Sullivan,” said van Gerwen, who has displaced the great Phil Taylor as Darts’ dominant force in recent years.

“Ronnie is a special Snooker player. I think the best ever and for someone like him to say something like that about me is special and I thanked him for what he said. I just need to win a few more titles to catch him up, I think.”

van Gerwen will return to action in the final European Tour event of the year next weekend in Germany as he continues to build up towards his quest for a second World Championship title in the New Year.

His third Grand Prix title saw him join an elite band of just two players who have won the same PDC major title more than twice. The 27-year-old can now boast that claim alongside 16-time World Champion Taylor, who has managed the feat several times.

If you follow darts as well as other sports, you might agree with him.

Gerwen has been playing phenomenal darts this year.

He does play amazingly good.
BUT...
Comparing darts to other sports.... eeh....
If his statement is about domination of a certain "sport" then ok, I undertand where he's coming from. But to say "MvG is even quicker than Bolt" then no shit sherlock, you mean that throwing 3 darts is faster than running 100 meters??...

He needs to check the career record of Kane Waselenchuk, clearly the best racquetball player to ever live and in my opinion the most dominant sports figure in the history of sports. Not only does he win every tournament he plays, he does it fairly easily. This is in a sport where having a bad day against another professional player having a great day should cause you to lose occasionally.

are you sure?
Don't think he is as dominant as Jahangir Khan :)

I took a look at his record... and wow... I would say that Khan and Kane are pretty close in terms of careers...... It would be interesting to compare the two when Kane is finished.

MvG is currently The name in darts and righteously so.

His fast paced, nearly aggressive style of play is exciting to watch and he has set a few new records this season aswell. Certainly a character worth recognition at the moment. I have a feeling though that he is going to have a similiar run to that of O'Sullivans, his peak will eventually drop down and he will once again be a mere mortal in his game along with others.

Dont get me wrong, it is still a pleasure to watch O'Sullivan play but his game is nowhere near as consistent that it used to be a few years back when he was in his prime  He still plays like a champ he is but he has started making more easy mistakes that cost him games these days allowing other great players to run the rankings.

It's funny, for years and years a lot of people said this about Phil Taylor, he would win almost every major darts tournament on the go, and broke every record in the book. He was probably the most dominant sportsman in the world for a decade or more. Maybe Roger Federer or Tiger Woods at his peak were close. Now MvG is breaking Phil's records, and I cannot think of anyone else who is so dominant in their field. Maybe Djokovic until the last 3 or 4 months? GGG in the boxing? Mighty Mouse in the UFC?? All in all, RoS is probably not wrong.

I wonder what it's like, for O Sullivan, to play on our 9 foot tables.
The pockets must seem like trash cans.
The guy is not just a shot maker, he is a great position player, who thinks as fast and well as anybody.
I doubt he is even slightly interested, but if he took up One Pocket seriously, who knows how good he could be in a short time, with a teacher from the top 5 or 10 players.
Efren could probably have him beating everyone in a year or less.

I would've thought the Rocket would've been more aware of his billiards history.

Walter Lindrum dominated English Billiards like no one else has ever dominated their discipline.
His records are FAR more unreachable than Willie's 526.

If you read the article, Ronnie is talking about today...not a half decade or half century ago..
