Ronnie O'Sullivan up next live

Ronnie has been spoiled in his career....a lot of his snooker has been running balls like a 9-ball player.
He’s mid 40s now....he needs to fall in love with the tactical side of the game...he’s got all the shots for it...
...but you can see he doesn’t like it....but it’s the only way his world class is going to be long lived.
There are only 3 players who can score with him so I hope he doesnt stop the barrages. I have insisted he dares others to beat him.

in all my years of watching professional snooker, i have never seen a player keep their chalk on the table, except when a full body stretch that would smash the chalk in their pocket. now robertson is doing it sometimes, and ding did it this entire game.

call it a pointless observation if you will.

Ding been doing it for a very long time, it's his style, ive seen it with him for many many years, he's the only snooker player that does it, as far as I remember.

really. good to know thank you. guess i haven’t watched him much or i’d have noticed. i noticed something else this match that was new to me- like efren, ronnie chalks with his ‘wrong’ (shooting) hand.

Ronnie has shown a tremendous ability to win without his best stuff. He has been patient, scrappy and clawed together a lot of wins that in the past he would have never managed nor even cared to... He obviously doesn't enjoy it as much as the high powered break building and 1 visit wins - but he's still alive. Truth be told, his safety/tactical game is top shelf - having been coached by Ray Reardon for a couple of years coupled with the remarkable talent he is... He'll be out tomorrow (today) to play with another new tip - his 3rd or 4th now this tournament - I've lost track. Should be enjoyable to watch. Beats the hell out of rotation for enjoyable viewing.

Some highlights of Matchroom.live's excellent broadcast of the Scottish Open. Ronnie v. Ding. I stand by my opinion that Matchroom has THE BEST coverage of snooker and pool on live stream and TV, bar none.

And Li makes like four bad shots in a row. Li also played an unusual 1-cushion break off to start the final frame. Ronnie is into the finals.

The finals are in two sessions on Sunday:

8AM Eastern, 5AM Pacific (ouch)
2PM Eastern, 11AM Pacific

The other semi-final starts in 2.5 hours at 2PM Eastern. It is Selby (ranked 4th) and Jamie Jones (ranked 80th).

If things go according to ranking, we will see a Selby-O'Sullivan rematch in the finals. Their previous match was in the semi-finals of the World Championship in which Ronnie managed to wriggle free from the coils of the boa constrictor. ;) Here is all 10 hours of the match (race to 17):

He's obviously receiving money for endorsing it.

Your opinion based on only watching Matchroom.live?

As far as chalk placed on the rail, many snooker players will put it there when they are leaning on the table in such a way that the chalk would be crushed if left in its usual place. There is a semi-formal ban of chalk on the rail at snooker as it might be construed as marking the table to assist the shot somehow.

I think that the uniform for the current tournament is a problem for some because the players are not wearing waistcoats (vests). I noticed that Selby has a small leather pouch on his belt for his chalk. So far no appearance of the the magnetic chalk holders that pool players use.

Carom players, on the other hand, nearly always place the chalk on the rail and are usually careful to make sure it is in a neutral place. Sang Chun Lee used to place the chalk on an irrelevant diamond, presumably because that was a location that was already marked and the chalk could not give any added benefit.

Carom players also nearly always remove their chalk from the table as they return to their seat. I know one player who was so offended by his opponent repeatedly leaving chalk on the table that he threw it at the careless dolt.😱

Ronnie shoots left and right. Same With the top Woman Snooker player, Reanne Evans. Ronnie can make a century using either hand... 98% of players have never made a century. I’ve made 6 in 52 years....just over 1 per decade.

When learning to play in the working men's clubs the chalk and cues were provided free and the chalk was left on the rail for everyone to use. When I bought my own cue and chalk I would prop it in the lip of my back pocket. I ruined every pair of trousers I had by wearing the top of the back pockets away from chalk abrasion. When magnetic belt clips became available I used that, and clipped it in the same place behind me. Sorted. It never gets crushed when leaning over the table. Always in the same place whenever I need it.
That, and an occasionally useful little plastic vee extension that slips over the spoke of a table rest are the only snooker gadgets I've ever bought.
