Ronnie

can you elaborate on this player? presumably he plays Chinese ball and yet is not one of their more well known champions?
I have seen Gong's name in the Joy top 16 players in China. I've been watching him now for maybe five years or so. I started watching Chinese 8 ball about 2012 and as a fan of 8 Ball I watch on YOUTUBE many hours. As you know pool can require much grace along with talent plus I see this man has the acceptance and composure needed for great pocket billiards. I watched him and Zheng Yubo play a set too 21 win and make 2 errors 19 break and runs. That was the best set I have ever watched... As an old man watching pool games I think we need this type of player to pass on to the young... Guy

I would say Ronnie's run at the moment is the greatest ever in modern cue sports, he was beating a prime Stephen Hendry in ranking tournament's 30 years ago as a teenager and today remains world champ and world number 1 ranked

his run through this years tourney was technical brilliance, he never came close to losing a match and just breezed through the whole damn thing

just ridiculous
A side from snooker, ( which i don't care for. I have watched Ronnie and Stephen both play here on the smaller tables and I see Stephen as an equal player of skill. I've watched both play on the Joy tournament 9' tables. This is what I see... I think Stephen can adjust to a smaller table better than Ronnie can ...

I get the impression Ronnie truly loves snooker. He is damn good at and has his life invested in it.
That being said why is it a surprise he doesn't seem able to adjust to a Chinese 8 ball table or American bar boxes? He just doesn't care to!

I did see Ronnie playing on a west coast tour here a few years back, If I remember right on an 9' playing 9 ball. This is why I thought of Stephen. I sure don't have anything to say bad about Ronnie's game, I just don't like snooker games. I did use to like the tables... Guy

If the IPT had worked out, he would have taken the time to get better I guess.
No incentive for him, like the other Snooker players.

After Judd Trump had his experience at US Open, he rightly said it would take a solid year to adjust to pool.
But, why would he when it meant not focused on his Snooker career.

So, like Steve Davis, you end up with Snooker players trying pool out in their twilight years and not in their prime.
On a sustained basis.
I do remember Ronnie tearing through matches in Mosconi cup ome year without a care in the World..

Yeah, three cushion is amazing. The one time I played against Sang Lee, he opened with innings of 9-8-9, so I trailed by a score of 26-1 after just three innings! Go figure.

Since he was probably playing you dead safe on every shot in case he missed it, scoring 1 is not bad at all. Thets another thing it is hard to understand and recognize is the sophistication of their safety play. They've gone way past 'easy up on the red'.

I didn’t want to derail the other thread so I made this one.

In pool we often talk about who’s the best player in the last 40-50 years. As prior to that there isn’t much video and it’s just lost in the past

Who’s the best?

Segal the best front runner
Buddy never had a hard shot
Earl has all the talent
Nick is Nick
Johnny player of the decade
Efren is magical
Busty is still at it 100%
SVB current WC
Ocollo
Gorst&Filler

You get the point.

In snooker, who doesn’t think Ronnie is the best player of the last 40 years? He can’t be beat-unless he beats himself. He does everything better.

My thoughts,

What are your thoughts?

Not here to argue about the Americans & other pool players. I was just generalizing.

But who’s better than Ronnie and at what?

Just amazing this guy dressed in black

Best
Fatboy 😃😃🎰
It seems to me that everyone is saying that Ronnie O Sullivan is the best all around billiard player in the last 40 + years . Why ? Guy

He misses less and has better CB control, and wins when he has to.
Then I ask you this of the all time greatest players list that you listed above to start the thread Ronnie. They played on one type or style of table and one type or style of game the same as Ronnie has. We both know that They have Not. Did I completely miss read your post ? ( Could Ronnie beat you Fatboy in you're environment and your in your time and as you played in front of a million people ,I Guy don't think so. I myself can't see it fair to say that Ronnie is better than all in the last 40 years... Guy

Who’s better?

ronnie in snooker is in a class by himself
but you would have to consider harold worst the best all around player in history for all carom games and all pool games (except banks maybe) and snooker
......................................
this from the link below
"Worst played at a world-champion level at three-cushion billiards, straight rail billiards, balkline billiards, nine-ball, one-pocket, straight pool and snooker. Bank may have been a possible weakness, but Worst was a cut-shot artist who didn't need to bank often, and to my knowledge there were no major bank tournaments in his day. When Worst was at his best, the championship games were the aforementioned ones. And during the last year of his life, before he died of terminal brain cancer at age 37, Harold "The Best" Worst cleaned everyone's clocks at those championship games. Furthermore, who knows how much better he may have become, or how long he might have ruled the billiards and pool roosts, if he had lived longer?"

"Worst is one of only five players, and the only one in the modern era, to have held world titles in three-cushion billiards and pocket billiards. And he is the only player to switch from three-cushion billiards to pocket billiards and win world championships in the latter. He also remains the youngest player to have won a world title in three-cushion billiards."

Excluding Carom Billiards, Mark Selby has to be in with a shout:

1 x English Pool World Champion
4 x Snooker World Champion
1 x Chinese 8-Ball World Championship Runner Up

That said if you had to pick one player, to play for your life without knowing the game (I'm ignoring Carom billiards for now) you'd probably opt for Ronnie!

Huh. If I had to play someone for my life, i would choose someone I had a chance at beating. Liked a seven year old Peruvian girl who had never seen a pool table.

Ronnie did not like onepocket when he toured the usa
worst would have drilled him
just sayin

fatboy
i do not want to derail your thread
ronnie is
IMHO
the greatest snooker player ever
👍😀

You were a roll model in life for me since I was 18. I saw that it was possible to play pool and be a successful person(in many ways in life).

John is one of my heros in life-that’s a short list.

That’s a great pic, I’m saving it.

My very best as always
Eric 🙏🏼😃❤️
Thank you Eric. Ronnie did not take to one pocket too well. I suppose if he liked it, he would have become a monster if he chose to do so. It was great spending a couple hours with him.

That’s great you got to play him. I’ve never had the pleasure to meet him. I’m certain he could be a monster at 1P as well, but his job is snooker and it appears impossible to play both at a high standard
