It's referee's discretion a lot of the time. I've seen matches where the player miscued and jumped over the ball and it was called a foul.

There is this shot which was legal for some reason (also a fluke).

Nevertheless you can't outlaw the cueball leaving the bed of the table completely, considering it will be air born any time you shoot hard while striking slightly down on it.

Thanks. This last part of your response is why the rule stuck in my head (at least I thought it was a rule). It seemed odd to me knowing that the cueball comes off the table slightly during many forcefull shots.
 
Jump rule

At snooker you can't jump over any portion of an intervening ball to hit the ball on.Once you've hit the ball on whitey can join the air-force.

For fun, check out his mechanics in this video and compare them to above vid. The man has incredible talent but he's worked very hard. It's the difference I think between him and Alex Higgens and Jimmy White.

Hah, awesome! He looks slightly annoyed that the cue ball took its time going back and forth after the last pink.

And the announcers were saying that, at the time, the high break in the tournament was a 125. You'd think Ronnie would take a little bit of care to make sure he pockets the last few colors to surpass that and set himself up for the high break prize.

That's the great thing about Ronnie, he doesn't seem to care too much about the high run, he seems to like putting on a show instead. Hendry or Higgins would have definitely made sure they had the high run in hand.

Yes, that's true.

Come to think of it, Ronnie shouldn't have so much trouble with his break shot in 9-ball. He just has to pretend he's potting that last black!
 
Just watched him coming back from 0-3 to win 6-4 vs. Robertson in the Masters. Great safety play and a couple of 100+, but never made one single long pot. Very solid though.

That's just the way he played back then. Fast and furious, but more consistent than a guy like Tony Drago. More recently he's slowed down considerably, but once the balls are opened up he starts flowing naturally. He'll make sure he hits the high break if the opportunity is there, anything less he tends to get silly when in amongst the colours.
