rose colored rosewood

I'm up late working on finishes & getting bored between coats, so i'll show off a little. Here's a PJ I built a while back & has been stuck in a case, built using a uniquely colored piece of rosewood. Supposed to be East Indian rosewood, but the only thing about it that remotely resembles it is the way it smelled during cutting. I have seen lots of wood, and know my woods pretty well, but have never seen this true rose red rosewood before or after this piece, and I have had it a while. If anybody has any leads on some more, i'd be sure interested.

Thanks, guys. It's a simple cue, nothing fancy, but an interesting piece of wood. My first thoughts were that it could be boise de rose, but it's not. Gonna have to go to India & check some things out, try to find some more :)

Sorry, Jhun. Cue belongs to Worminator, AKA New2youq's.

i bougth a few pieces of something very similar from Bell at the SBE.it was red in color and looked unlike any other East Indian i have ever seen, but like yours the smell was familiar and weight and density too.turned out to make an awesome hitting cue.

I was gonna say, it does have similar grain as Bois de Rose. Now, I have seen Madagascar rosewood run from a more reddish brown to a more red...just not quite as dark as the BdR. I would vote for a Mad rosewood myself.

At any rate...came out real nice. Jamie is a lucky dog! :D

Beautiful cue Eric, per usual. Love the joint and butt cap. I hope you are doing well, my friend.

The rosewood is called Kamphi. It is from the country of Laos. Looks like Cocobola but straighter , tighter grains and is lighter in density. But still in the rosewood family. I have a cue I just built with Kamphi as the forearm.
The hit is very solid and the color and grains are amazing. Red,black, and a shade of orange. Like all rosewoods , the color ranges , but you can definately tell it's Kamphi.
Hope this helps......

Hehehe... I thought I got lucky.

Welcome back Eric.

I appreciate the gesture, but I know for sure it's not kam-phi. From your pic, i'm about 99% sure yours isn't, either. I have been using kam-phi for years, and currently have around 150lbs. of it in turning squares. Supply died out on it several years ago & was obsolete until a guy out west began selling it. However, he is unpredictable & calls anything "kam-phi". He knows the true kam-phi, and will sell it to you if he knows you know it. Otherwise he sells cochen & a few other rosewoods as kam-phi. Your piece looks 110% cochen. True kam-phi is much less impressive looking. It's a bland pumpkin orange with straight, tight grain & very rarely figured or contrasting black grain lines. It's also heavier & harder & more dense than cochen. It's unmistable when cutting because it actually smells like a spicy pumpkin pie, makes you hungry for thanksgiving. If you like i'll get some pics of the differenmt woods for you. Til then, you might want to consult with your supplier ;)

I have a couple of each in the turning stages. I'll take a pic for you. Don't read me wrong. Cochen is a fantastic cue wood, nothing to be upset about. I actually like it better than kam-phi. I have several of each.

Nice!!!

Nice merrywidow!!!
I bet it sings!

Looks real nice...bet it looks sweet in the sunlight.

Good Knowledge of the woods Eric. But I 100% assure you , this is Kamphi in it's true form. I buy it straight from the lumberer in Laos. It is not purchased here in the states. But thanx for the insight on the other wood. I am very familiar with both. I have around 30 pieces of this all with much different grains and looks. As I said , rosewoods very ALOT in color and grains.
Cue looks great by the way!

Well, if that's kam-phi you have there then it's a very unique piece, or else your camera gave it a red tint. And hey, share the wealth!!! I wanna buy some rosewood. Stuff's not easy to get.

Very unique would be a great choice of words. No, my camera skills are below par I admit that. I do not sell my woods very often , and if you have 150 pounds of rosewood, I'd say you are set for some time.
Thanx again,
Jim Lee

I don't want your wood. I want your supplier :)

as usual, Eric, this one is a real beauty, i absolutely love that BEM Butt and joint.
I have "just" a Goncalo Alves/Bem sneaky from you and it makes me strongly want more. All your cues are eye candy and my sugartree is the best cue i ever played with.
Thank you for your work,
David
