Your mind might be blown if you ever sent some samples previously identified by cue building wood experts to the USDA lab for actual identification.

That wood is dark brown. I think we can all agree on that. Seems like brown wood has the most diverse identifications.
 
I have some cocobolo that looks about like that and also some camatillo you wouldn't believe it was really that species until you wipe it with some thinner and it's bright purple.

I had a very old Jacoby cue once. I would have sworn the damn thing was Bocote. I was thinking about having Jacoby restore the cue. I called and spoke to them at length regarding the cue. I sent them photos, and they identified the cue, as one of their earlier Cocobolo models. I would have never believed it. To this day, I have never seen a piece of Cocobolo, that looked that much like Bocote. ;)
