I'm not a cue-maker, and I tend to shy away from posting here, but it could also be very dark Bocote. What is the weight of the cue, and do you know whether or not is has been cored? I do tend to agree with the possibility of Macassar Ebony.
I had a very old Jacoby cue once. I would have sworn the damn thing was Bocote. I was thinking about having Jacoby restore the cue. I called and spoke to them at length regarding the cue. I sent them photos, and they identified the cue, as one of their earlier Cocobolo models. I would have never believed it. To this day, I have never seen a piece of Cocobolo, that looked that much like Bocote.I have some cocobolo that looks about like that and also some camatillo you wouldn't believe it was really that species until you wipe it with some thinner and it's bright purple.
