this is often the case i have a funny way of telling the difference. if you have a laminated tabletop or counter i drop them on the hard counter and listen to the noise. youll figure out what ones are bad and good. may take getting use to it but i have it dont to a science :D :D :D

triangle are much more consistant

How are you trimming the sides of the tip? What size tip are you putting on what size ferrule?

trimming with razor blade , 14mm onto 13mm ferrule
same as i've always done

Do you use a live center on the tip as you are cutting it to hold it back toward the chuck? I agree some tips are bad but some you have to be careful with. Depends on the player and how soft they want it.

from a players stand point (ok from a ball bangers stand point) I like the sumo's. I've heard that some have had problems with them breaking chunks off. I have been using them for about 2 years without any problems and find them to be a perfect replacement for lepro's and triangles. Little harder than triangles, and about the same as a cut down, hit with for 5 months lepro used to be.

i only use pressure when its a layered tip. if you cut only 1 way, twards the ferrule, there shouldnt be a prob.

i dont trim the sides with a razor but i shape them with a razor

Bbuffalo tips seem to have the texture of balsa wood and the density of pine.
some folks like to use them for break shafts , i think they're awful.
when LePro tips are good , they're Good! , sorry to hear of your bad luck.

all my break shafts are equipped w LePro tips , i dress the edge & top w Rasp or File.
Moori mediums are incredibly popular , med soft's aren't produced nowadays.
picked up some Kamui tips , looking forward to working with those.

Az member CueMaster98 installs Molavia tips with excellent player feedback!

Triangle tips seem to be a bit more consistent. Sounds like you just lucked into a bad box or two of the LePros. They are cheap enough, you can afford to throw most of them away if you have to. Usually that's not the case though.

A good test for lepro's and triangles prior to installing, 5 lb. sledge and the anvil part of a Vise, A nice little whack, if the tip doesn't split on the bottom, it should be okay. Hope this helps.

i've been whacking them with a 20 oz hammer on the concrete
like you said, the sides will split out on the crappy ones
but all the 4 i went thru yesterday didn't do that
they were what i thought to be the "good ones"

another way of choosing is to check out the back side, the flatter / smoother backsides tends to be the hardest as this was pressed more

I tap them on the metal bars that server as the lathe bed on my Porper. You can tell if they are any good, and how hard they are from the sound it makes.

Good Le Pro replacement

So what do guys recommend as a good lepro replacement. I'm hearing WB tips quite a bit. I tried Moori Quick and liked it but had to shape it and scuff it constantly. Tried Sniped and Everest but they feel a bit too soft. Anyone find any thing that they feel plays like a good broken in LePro?

If You think The 14mm is bad, then don't even think about 15mm, because they are even worse and practically useless a lot of times. I will not use 15mm anymore. I have been able to get a few people that like them softer to switch over to the triangles as others have mentioned here, and they liked the change, but for those that liked the lepros harder or compressed, they still want to stick with them, and I have to cherry pick to find them good ones. On average there are not many of the good ones like that in a box anymore. I don't know if I would say they are actually rotton, or simply just not what they use to be. Greg
