Router Alternative

Like possibly many cuemakers here, I had a router laying around my shop seeing very little use: in this case a Dewalt model 621 plunge router. It has 2 HP so plenty of beef behind it and it can use both 1/4 and 1/2 inch shank bits.
I removed the plunge router frame and the attached spindle lock system in maybe 15 min, then made an aluminum adapter to mount it to my CueMonster or TaperShaper where needed, for rough shaft/butt cutting or cutting half splice point grooves. Yes I have quiet routers for both machines, but this compact plunge router has way more power and runs quite smooth as well. In the past I did multiple passes for deep point grooves with the quiet router, and it wore out belts sooner than I would like. Now I can cut with one pass if I care to, and at full speed with nice results. As a plus this router is quieter than my PorterCable trim routers.

I have a similar router myself from my guitar making days and had more-or-less the same idea.

Was even going to design and make a 45 degree mount that fits on the Bridgeport to cut point grooves, so you can use a cheap bit and not have to tilt the head 45 degrees.

No time right now... Even my cues are on hold until after the first of the year!

I didn't know Dewalt could make a router that wasn't horribly loud. My laminate is TWICE as loud as the Rigid and Colt.

I believe routers as a whole started to become quieter about 15 yrs ago. If you have a model older than that, or a newer model but based on the older designs, your machine will probably be a SCREAMER!.

I couldn't believe how much quieter my Bosch variable speed plunge router was compared to my 690 PC. Bought the PC in maybe 1990 and the Bosch in maybe 1995. Bought a new PC 890 in 2008. Much quieter than the 690, but total garbage in quality compared to its cousin from 20 yrs ago.

Cue Monster Quiet Router

Hi,

We use the Cue Monster for inlays and pockets only, I love the quiet router and have zero complaints. I think it is a great idea to use a router with more hp for cutting grooves or tapering with the CNC.
