router speed & mount

my neighbor does not like the sound of my porter cable...:banghead:
so i'm thinking of upgrading to a kress.
now there are 2 models with variable speeds. one does
5-25k and the other one 10-30k. can someone knowledgeable point out which one would be the better choice. I would use it for tapering.

also, would anyone know who makes a taig based lathe mount
for a kress that is vertical & height adjustable? 43 mm clamping collar.

Thanks,

Oliver Ruuger

I have 2 of the 110 volt and they are nice , my buddy WilleeCue has the 220 volt and it is nicer ... So if you have 220 in your shop get the 220 volt , you will be happy with the smoothness of operation and cutting ...;)

Yes.
Easily 5 decibels .

sounds like good advice (pun intended) BUT!
to run the porter cable here from the 220v mains would then take a transformer (massive yellow box) + the pento..p..pamfimeter... I'd still like to hear opinions on the Kress. Love buying new tools

I have the Kress 750. It has piercing sound even though more quiet.
I use Bosch Colt with adjustable speed now.
With a thin 3-wing cutter I don't have to max it out.

funny you say that, just switched to a colt yesterday from a pc...much quiter even at its max speed. think it also has alot to do with the amount of hours on the router....pretty sure that mine got louder as it got more hours put on it.

Router mount...TSP&B vertical mount...you can use the colt base and hack off the front side. mounts directly to Todds setup. "almost like it was made for it"

I believe the Rigid is as quiet as they get, although I can't speak for Kress.

I have:
Dewalt
Bosch
Rigid.

The Rigid is about half as loud as the Dewalt, which I think compares to the PC

What rpm range is the Colt? I bought one for my son Christmas before last but never looked at it. I would like to have a router powerful enough for cutting off deco-rings but a router just runs to fast and gets the blade so hot. I bought a speed reducer from H/F but it cut the routers power so much that it would stall. I have a Sears variable speed slow start full size router set up for turning butts on my butt lathe which forks fine but I hate to have to use such a large router if not needed.

If you are worried about noise why not just put a foam box around the router with a vent in the top. You will be amazed how much quieter it is.

A Rotozip is not as loud as the Portercable and runs 30,000 RMP's. I cut the speed down and it runs very quiet. It's a good alternative for an extra router at a good price.

Can you post a picture by any chance.

Unfortunately I can't. I abandoned the router years ago for the saw. Piece of sponge foam like an air filter and a rubber band on top of the router makes less noise also and it keeps the guts cleaner The real open rained stuff not like what is used in cushions.

I use the Kress 1050 220v for turning. It is better than the 110v ver. Less vibration and noise. It runs very quit compared to the Porter cable and alot less vibration. Hands down I would get the 1050 220v of the Kress. Along with it I would get the 1/4" and 1/8" collets. It is easy to cut off the eruo plug and wire up a US 220v plug. As far as the mount, check out Brianna products if you want to mount to a taig dove tail.

Thanks Jim & others, im set on the 1050 220 but the original question addresses the 2 different models: 5000 to 25000 variable speed and the 2nd option is 10000 to 29000 speed. do i need really slow speed or really high. im thinking high. sorry im also drunks, happy saturday nights everyone :)

I didn't know that Kress was offering the slower modle. By the way the faster goes up to 32K not 29K. When I checked my sourse you where correct though. I would agree that the faster one will be better. I did notice that my sources prices have shot up.

Guess I am a little more redneck than most of you. If my nieghbor was complaining about the noise my router was making, I would be looking for a louder one!
