i was in a match the other day and my opponent rattled the 8 ball in a corner pocket. i was then on my last ball which was in front of the other corner pocket and i fired it in with a little bottom english. when my ball went in, the 8 ball fell in about 1 second after mine. what is the ruling here, spot it, put it back in front of the pocket or i lose or what? (i know, buy another table).

You lose...once you touch the CB, anything that happens is on you. But it might depend on league or house rules; 8 ball is funny that way....

The rule for all games is anytime a ball falls in due to something other than
the result of a legal stroke(shot), it is returned to its position and play
continues as if it had not gone into the pocket.

Correct, you put the 8 back where it was.

no, you only put the 8 back IF it is a result of a legal stroke.

For example. 8 ball gets hung in the corner. The OP shoots his ball it goes in without touching the 8 ball, he walks around the table to his next shot and GODZILLA COMES INTO THE HALL and the 8ball falls.

Whoever is left standing should put the 8 ball back up.

it was a legal shot because, according to him he hit his ball first, made it, and then drew into the 8 ball and made that. that's a loss

If I understand what you are saying. You did not contact the 8 ball and it just fell into the pocket? Then it gets respotted. If it fell because you caused contact on the 8 with another ball then it is loss of game. If it is respotted it is respotted to the original location.

The way I read his post is: "I made my last ball and the 8 ball fell in by itself without being touched by any ball."

If that's the case, most above have it right: you put the 8 back where it was and play the next shot from where the cue ball ended up. If the 8 had instead fallen in on the next shot just after you had hit the cue ball to make the 8 in the corner and the cue ball had gone straight into the pocket, you would replace both balls as closely as possible to their original positions and play the shot again.

The rules are here: http://www.wpa-pool.com/web/the_rules_of_play

Here is the pertinent rule:

1.7 Balls Settling
A ball may settle slightly after it appears to have stopped, possibly due to slight imperfections in the ball or the table. Unless this causes a ball to fall into a pocket, it is considered a normal hazard of play, and the ball will not be moved back. If a ball falls into a pocket as the result of such settling, it is restored as closely as possible to its original position. If a settling ball falls into a pocket during or just prior to a shot, and this has an effect on the shot, the referee will restore the position and the shot will be replayed. The shooter is not penalized for shooting while a ball is settling. See also 8.3 Ball Pocketed.

ok yeah i misread it. if it fell in of its own volition hen put it back. right on, my bad

But if that happens playing 9 ball you scoop the balls grab the rack and smile as if you won the game. Hoping your opponent just sits in stunned silence. ;)

thank you for the explanation ........thank goodness, i win the cheese!
to clarify, after my ball went in, a second later the 8 ball fell in apprently from the vibration of my "firing" my ball into the hole....after all, it is a olhausen table!

Or you might get away with saying that you also called the eight for that pocket and get the win unless you were playing last pocket eight ball of course.

according to rules cannot make last ball and the 8 on the same shot, even if called. 8 must be pocketed on separate shot.

I know that. That's why I said you might get away with it depending on whom you're playing. It was just a funny.
