Running 100 in straight pool

Well, I used to play Babe Cranfield when I was a kid and he blasted the pack. The cue ball always double kicked through the pack. He almost never scratched. He use to run 250, 350 and more on many occasions. Even ran 450, 550 and higher... He learned from the old guys just as they learned from the old guys. Unbelievable 14.1 player.

Guess it changed earlier than I thought, lol!

You were a lucky guy getting to play with such a legend on a regular basis. The experience must have been priceless.

I played for one year and towards the end of that year I was running racks, 60+ balls. I later quit for 18 years and never picked up a stick, not even in a bar. The amazing thing is that having played him most of the time for that one year, I forgot nothing. Jumped right back in. I think he taught me quite a bit from aiming, understanding feel, how to play shots, ... Anyway he used to get pissed off at me whenever I played the wrong shot or played a shot the wrong way. His face would turn red. I put up with it though and learned quite a bit, A great man and a great player, bless him.

I am by no means an expert, just a lowly 'b' player myself and occasional 15-20 ball runner. Being from NJ and growing up watching Jose Garcia, Allen Hopkins and Jimmy Fusco just to name a few, I'd have to say that I am more accustomed to watching the chip away method of running balls in straight pool. Although, after watching Steve play straight pool and crush the balls with the break shot, it's extremely difficult to argue his method. I will say this, I believe that on tough equipment, meaning tight pockets and slow cloth, the chip away method would most likely provide more consistent runs. I don't think that anybody short of a snooker champ wants to back cut a break shot 100 mph into a small pocket. Also, slower cloth may yield more unpredictable results with a smash up break shot, or should I say more undesirable results. Furthermore, I think it's arguable that they chip away method is more likely to put your opponent in a coma. It's very frustrating to sit in the chair and watch your opponent run a hundred tapping in balls and chipping the rack and always shooting a hanger as his run increases. The flip side I guess is that if you can run more 150's and out smashing the stack, then it really doesn't matter if your opponent is in a coma. Just my opinions and my 2 cents. Incidently, Efren also runs balls using the chip away method, and really I challenge anyone to question Efren.

Steve, good luck in the Comet tournament.

Tim, I'm glad I didn't know that you ran 100 balls when I played you straight pool(u needed 1 or 2 and I ran 36 and out on you making three break shots and ending with a cross side bank. If I never run 100 balls, that game is the highlight of my straight pool playing experience), because I probably would have folded up like a little girl.(Just remembered something funny about that game. Seems to me that after the 3rd break shot, I was only going to need 1 ball to get out. So, I played position for a very high percentage break shot(easy to pocket), but that wouldn't yield too much breakage in the rack, and hit it a very moderate speed to insure pocketing the ball. My rational was that I only needed that ball and one more so why take any chances. I talked to Steve about it later wanting to know his opinion and to hopefully learn something. It was funny, he told me that I shoulda smashed the rack.)

Just so the readers know, I know both these guys and they are gentlemen and a pleasure to play with.

Ahhh... now I know who you are, Hoboken ;). You might be the most under-rated B on the planet, lol. I'm sure you'll be moving up next season.

Anyway, congrats on making it this far in the league playoffs, and good luck tonight!

Hi Steve, yes my identity is finally revealed! Although Jude knows I was using this ID.

It's been a great season. My whole team love the Amsterdam League, the people and the format. I've definitely reached new levels this season as has everyone on my team. I've no idea where it's come from as I have not practiced in 5 months. In a way that I don't understand, it has helped my game, and I'm now deliberately not practicing but just reading books and watching Accu-Stats videos.

I look forward to the challenge of moving up. I'm surprised it hasn't already happened.

cheers,
tim

quality patterns rather than a 100 with through chaos.

I know a guy that's been playing for less than 2 years that ran 75...thanks to the total chaos methodology :D . His knowledge of the game at the time can be summed up by "try to bust the stack wide open on every single shot at 200mph". it was beautiful.

Sorry for making you feel ill at ease and taking you out of your element. Ok...a night with Whitewolf and BazookaJoe instead. :p :D

If you run 100 within that month, dinner...drinks...and a woman for the night will be on my tab. (unfortunately you'll have to get the air fare over here) :D
I do a search on my name & wonder, How on earth did my name end up in a thread about straight pool.... When I saw the above quote... I knew It wasn't going to be pretty.

And you're right DM... one case is just a warm up for me. Funny thing is... when Colin typed it, I of course was about to jump in and correct him. Then I got to your post.... GMTA LOL ;)

... as Bob Jewett once so eloquently put it, "even a drunk girl scout can run an open table."

While I'd like to take credit for that turn of phrase, it was Danny McGoorty as quoted by Bob Byrne who said it. I think the quote was something like, "that shot's so easy even a drunk Girl Scout could make it if you held her up to the table."

The current edition of "McGoorty" is in the "Library of Larceny" series, and Amazon can deliver it to your door for only $7 (used). Warning: this is the sort of book you probably can't read to your grandmother unless you have a very special grandmother.

Hi Bob. In my opinion, the game is changing from the old "chip away" method to a newer "break 'em good" method.
- Steve

yeah. smaller runs but the "old way" was more eloquent. :)

I don't know which is better, chipping or blasting, but I just watched the 1966 14.1 Championships with Balsis vs Crane and they BOTH blasted the rack. Crane went 150 on Balsis. Now when they were opening small clusters they used the chip shots, but not on the full rack break shots. I have used both styles of play, I think the chip away method gets me slowed down and playing correct 14.1. The blast method makes for some big runs (my high run 106) was done that way. If I could only blend the 2 together in perfect harmony like Sigel, I'd be a world champ too:)

Hello , take things slow and apply the 3 ball rotation method , if you are not familar with this here is a short synopsis that works for me , after the break in 9-ball you do not shoot the 1st ball untill you know where the 3rd ball is going after you pocket the 1st ball you add the nest 3rd ball and this will keep a triad going untill you get down to the last 3 balls and then it is just a matter of 3 shots , try this in straight pool and it will improve your concentration my personal high run in straight pool is 127 and 9 racks of 9-ball , I was fortunate enough to have my Dad witness these events, Stay down !!!!!!!!! Straight is all I played for many years. Can't hardly find a game anymore. Was at Cahmpions in Rockville a few years ago and was practicing straight. It attracted a small crowd. Nobody knew what I was playing!

Love straight pool best of all. High run to date is 54. Almost shooting my age. I agree with previous posts. 100 is very tough. Like Ray says, the balls won't let you run 100. Saw Mosconi run 261 many years ago. I was mesmerized. Really too bad straight pool isn't on t.v. anymore.
