Earl surprised them with some of those shots. He also fouled at the start of the 6th rack.
It's called bending the rubber. Hit it hard enough and the rubber compresses and before it can reject the ball it goes in. Sorta like Byrnes trick shot for the side pocket.
Yes. And because the pockets are cut more parallel than corner pockets on pool tables, you don't have the same speed/rejection connection. Also, I didn't notice any balls that rattled and hung -- they either fell or bounced far away.
earl made the pockets look like buckets.....
every time one starts talking about pyramid as a very hard game I opt to chime in and say that it is actually the easiest of pocket games around. So for a pool player, especially as skilled as Earl, it is just a matter of time and effort whether they will master it or not. Look how good Earl did, provided that must have been the first time ever he tried pyramid.
Re hard hits, the replies are correct. The pockets don't have facings, so the tips of the corner pockets are forced to "give" under such strong impact. It is possible of course to pocket a ball with a pocket speed, but requires accuracy. Real accuracy this time, that's why it is rarely seen, even on top level. It is easier to bang them than try to hit precisely. Still think the game is hard? :wink:
