Would it be possible to get just 2 arbors say .840 and 845 for the finish and put an insert into each one for your thread size say 3/8 x10 and just use these. For the butt you can thread it on and sand either size and for the shaft you can put a pin through it and thread it into the shaft and do the same sanding. These things are so fricken expensive that this might be the only way I can affort a set. I have prices quoted for each of those sizes , 70.00 for 1/2 inch carbide and 85.00 for 3/4 inch carbide with a 1/2 inch ID. Some thought would be appreciated. Thanks.

Call John Rocker! His mandrels are perfect. You will have to pay more than $85 but they will be with you forever.

Hi,

Expensive? What is having great matching concentricity worth when you can have a matching size standard that comes out of your shop.

John made mine and they are frecking awesome. High quality work.

If you want to save some cash, just have a quality set made for the post finish. If you make your last pass between centers, and you can consistently turn the butt and the shaft to the same diameter, and you can install a pin concentrically, you can get away with not having a pre finish set that you final sand to. Just don't get carried away with the final sanding, and the pre finish sanding should be concentric enough to apply a finish and use a mandrel for the post finish sanding.

Can someone give me Johns number? I was thinking about ordering the sanders from Unique. I would be amazed at a sanding arbor being true at $70.00. Heck I want them dead on or not bother, defeats the purpose.

I think the prices he is quoting is for the carbide sleeve blank, not the work to make the entire mandrel and finish grind the sleeve to one's spec.

To answer your question, stay away from your insert idea. This gives room for play. You will want a pre - finsih and finish size sets to ensure equal clear coat thickness all the way around your joints. Now please don't be offended, if you don't have the money, hold off, buy quality mandrels. Use your money else where until you are at a point that you know how to use them and you are ready. Too many times have I seen people think that they are ready to advance and the are not, myself included. Just asking the question about the insert leads me to believe you do not understand fully why they help. FYI, I just got mine and have not used them yet. I am looking forward to as I have witnessed them used by a very competent cue maker and he was kind enough to explain everything to me. I could not go on without them. I shelled out $500 easily once I understood it. I have my pre - finsih size .010" under finish.

Good luck, Jim.

Definitely get in touch with John Rocker his mandrels are perfect, my set rock's. You wont be disappointed!
