Anybody going to the SLT08? I missed last year and I'm not missing it this year. Anybody have any suggestions on hotels around there, especially if you stayed last year? I'm like an hour and a half away, so I could drive in and out, but is there parking when it's on?

I'll be there

I enjoyed the US nationals so much this year, I will be at the Sang Lee event too. I can't be very helpful though...this will be my first year at the event. I am staying at the extended stay America with friends. That location has parking and kitchen appliances. 718 357 3661

Carom Cafe (unlike most of NY) has free parking, and there will be a valet throughout the tournament. I've been going to NY for tournaments since 1994 or so, and earlier this year was the first time I even bothered to rent a car during my stay. Main street is a short walk (or bus ride) away, and from there you can take the subway anywhere. Also, the front desk will call a Korean cab for you if you need to go somewhere, and they are usually much cheaper and have nicer cars than other options.

There are several hotels within walking distance, and many more if you have wheels. Besides the official tournament site Bob posted, the same info is also on the USBA website here. It has a good description of the hotel options, including discount info for USBA members.

If you can only make it for one day, I would recommend the friday or last sunday. The first sunday will be preliminary round matches and you won't see as many top players (the seeded players won't be playing yet, for example).

I would like Carom Cafe to give special attention to Saygıner and make some of his matches in Video On Demand format.Since he cannot participate UMB events,we can ony watch him in private tournaments like AGIPI or Sang Lee.

He says in interviews he practices 3-4 hours a day but finds it very difficult to get motivated under the current situation.

he is still very strong but other top guys may be a little to much for him due to his lack of match experience lately.

Timur

Carom Cafe is the room where the tournament is being held, but Jan Carl at CaromTV (a separate entity) is who actually produces the Video On Demand matches. Jan is basically a 1-man shop volunteering his time and resources to make the videos available in support of billiards. He appreciates feedback from customers, and his contact info is available on the CaromTV website if you'd like to send him any suggestions directly.

Sayginer has been featured in matches every year that he participates. Since Jan can only tape one match per round and there are so many good players competing, it's not so easy to decide which game to record. Also, High Rock Productions has a TV table in the back with a professional ESPN film crew that has first choice when it comes to recording games. Semih's games are frequently on the back TV table and therefore unavailable for recording by CaromTV. There is a possibility that some of that footage will be released through CaromTV in the future (and therefore VOD) but I'm not sure when that might happen.

If you haven't already, you should check out the High Rock site for more matches. There are several on YouTube as well from back there if you search a bit. (High Rock Productions is responsible for putting carom billiards on ESPN for the first time ever, and Sayginer was the featured performer!)

Raiford, will you be doing any commentating with Jan Carl this year?

Also a reminder [unless change this year] lot of the tournament, practice, and after hours playing can be watching on live cam at http://www.caromtv.com

Or a larger screen at
http://www.xs4all.nl/~roelria/bun/carom/cam/t1.htm
http://www.xs4all.nl/~roelria/bun/carom/cam/t1.htm
http://debun.nl/

It look like Carom Cafe is recover tables, as I'm typing.

What would you say is the average cost for a week during SL Tournament, for Players or Spectators?

Maybe an opportunity will arise when Jan Carl and you could show beginner
instruction on live Tournament cam.

I won't be doing commentary until I'm knocked out of the tournament, as I find it requires too much sustained concentration and can be exhausting if I have to play several matches a day as well. Last year I made it to the semis so I didn't do any until the finals. Since I hope to do better this year, I guess that means I don't want to do any videos. I hope that doesn't mean you'll be rooting against me now! :)

The cheapest hotels are still over $100/night, so even if you don't rent a car you can expect to pay at least $1000 for the week. Plus food. Plus $450 entry fee (or tickets for spectators - not sure of $$). Many people share rooms to cut costs. I'm renting a car and staying with a friend about 10mins away. For those not playing, I recommend coming for the last 3-4 days to watch the semis/finals if trying to minimize expenses.

Effective instructional material is much harder to produce than filming live matches IMO. We just film and talk during the game, and Jan creates the scoreboards later in his spare time and it's done. Instructional stuff would require more planning and a different setup to do well. I don't think it would be so effective to try it live, especially since the webcam frame rate is fairly low and the audio can get out of sync. I have very clear ideas about material I intend to produce, but my time for this is limited and it won't happen very soon. I'll keep you posted!

I heard an interesting story today about Sang Lee that I've never heard of before.

A friend of mine who's an excellent 3-C player (ran a 12 and an 8 back to back awhile ago) was watching Allen Gilbert win another one of his US National championships at California Billiards in Northern California.

A Korean guy no one knows shows up with some backers and they negotiate a game to 125 for the money Allen just won in the tourney.

The Korean guy is Sang Lee and he immediately does his thing and is leading 50-10 or something like that and Allen, apparently no stranger to pool and billiards gambling, leaves his chalk on the rail. In three cushion of course this is considered "bad form" so Sang Lee picks up the chalk, returns it to Allen, gives him a curt bow and continues to play like God.

Allen leaves his chalk on the table, Sang Lee returns it and bows again. Allen does it another time or two and Sang Lee takes the chalk and walks all the way to the other end of the pool hall (its a BIG room, not your average size hall at all) and places the chalk on a pool table. :p

Sang goes on to win 125-50 or something like that and take everything Allen just won.

Reminds me of the Caeser Morales stories of Efren you hear when he first got here.

I've seen such abandonned chalk thrown at its owner.

Did you happen to watch that match, Bob?

It was told to me by Tom Costello, who you might know since he lives in Northern California and was a good friend of Robert Byrne also.

I asked him yesterday what year he thought it happened and he said he wasn't sure but it was at least 20 years ago.

It's been a while for me, but the last time I went three or four years ago it was an easy subway ride out to the end of the Flushing line and then a five minute or so walk. Not too bad at all.

Maybe a dumb question, but didn't see it anywhere on the SLT site - what are the actual hours of the tournament? What's the start time?

Meeting and drawing at 10:00 AM Today 07/20/08.

I noticed tournament webcam is off presently, but regular live webcam are back up.

As last year - I hope some AZers' will post their pictures/photos where.
Like maybe Cuetable

Robert is making a great tournament, I hope can win Jan Carl and pass to next round.
Good Luck Robert!!
