Sang Lee International, unusual chalk

Not my game, but I spent a delightful week at the 3 cushion tournament in Flushing. Not only was the tournament play wonderful, but it was fascinating watching eventual second place Torbjorn Blomdahl passing the time by shooting straight-my game, not his-on a side table. He was effortlessly running fifties+ while racing around the table in true Lou Butera-Luc Salvas fashion.

A question: Some of the players, including tournament winner Frederic Caudron, were using a kind of chalk I've never seen before: about 3/4 the height of a standard cube and notched on all four sides. Anyone know what this is?

I know players would trim down chalks with a cutter after it has got a deep dip. Some of them would use tape the chalk with a black tape. I have some special 3 cushion chalks at home. I left in the bag after buying it from a pro, 2 chalks in a nice box for $5. However, I have totally forgot about this until now (Thank You :) ). Charlie of competition sport also sells this special Sang Lee brand chalk. It is also recommended by good players. I can take some pictures tonight and maybe people will have a better idea.

Questions:
Miscueing happen more often in 3 cushion billiard, what is the reason for this?

(bigger and heavier balls, smaller tip, smoother ball surface, or something else?)

Baygene, maybe Bob Jewett can tell us about the chalk. If not I'll ask Dieckman as he also play in the tournament. I wondering, if you took any pictures and would you post them for us to see?

all they're doing is trimming the chalk when it gets deep. some players use longoni chalk i think. maybe ira lee is lurking , and he can tell you why.

Chalk that's used properly.

Beginners drill a hole in the chalk. They also chalk badly. If your chalk has a hole drilled down the center, you need to realize that you don't yet know how to chalk. Don't be too ashamed, since if you survey the chalk in the typical pool room, you'll find that you're in the majority. See the article in

http://www.sfbilliards.com/articles/2002-11.pdf

Good players use a chalking motion that tends to wear a pin-wheel (or swastika-like) shape on the face of the chalk, leaving four notches on the sides.

And, no, I'm not kidding. Check out the chalk wear patterns at any pro tournament in any cue sport.

The higher rate of miscues in 3-C is due to the fact that players are often loading up the cueball with a lot of english. Much more than most pool players (maybe not efren) and a ton more than your average snooker player.

Its a good idea to carry your own chalk in your cue case. Billiard tournaments sometimes they don't supply chalk for you since they expect you to be bringing your own. Also, if a pool hall supplies chalk for you, they probably store the stuff by the gross in cardboard boxes in the basement or some other uncontrolled environment. Chalk ends up too dry (sometimes you have to scrape off the top layer!) or too wet (just "goops" around on the tip) and otherwise inconsistent.

The benefit of the Sang Lee chalk (besides being great chalk) is that it is packaged in a resealable carrying box (of 3) with a desicant in it to control the humidity. This might sound a little crazy to most people, but for serious folks chalk consistency is important. If you are often hitting way on the edge of the cue ball with maximum english (like in 3c) miscues can happen. The chalk is not sold by the gross or dozen; it is only sold in boxes of 3.

Many 3-cushion players (and some pool players) are starting to use it. It is expensive, but I think it is worth it. I like it because of the plastic box - which keeps the rest of the items in my case clean.

It is distributed by Competition Sports.

As for the short chalks...they all started the same (cube) shape. Many billiard players have a piece of chalk that they really like and then don't waste any of it.

I guess when you spend this much on a cube of chalk, you come to take care of it; and use it until it is a mere sliver... but in order to use a complete piece of chalk properly, you have to develop the habit of employing a special chalking pattern (not drilling into the center) where you swipe to the edges (or corners) from the center.

Does anyone DOMESTIC sell GOLD STAR CHALK?

Apparently, this place distributes it: http://www.joba.net/CommercePortal/products.asp?id=111

They claim to have 300+ resellers, but nothing comes up doing a routine search.

I got my Gold Star Chalk thru Carom Cafe a while ago. Not sure if they still have it. You can check with Ming-Jae Pak or Miguel Torres. Carom's number 718 358 8585

Competition Sports sells this special "Sang Lee Chalk" in a pack of 3. Their number is 800 645 2162

Thanks Ira!! I didn't know of any place that sold the Sang Lee chalk here. I just ordered several boxes.

AND Thanks, cuetable! I'll call Carom tomorrow and see if they have any Gold Star.
