Santa Fe & Taos

Kenny Anderson. Talk about a blast from the past. I first met & played Kenny in the mid 60's at Tropicana Bowl in Inglewood. I was out drinking and stopped by the bowl after hours and I ended up playing him some $20/30 a game 9 ball. He got me stuck a couple hundred and when I started making a comeback the house man (who was staking him) shut the table down for throwing the $$ on the table. It was ok when he was robbing me. We ran into each other dozens of times over the years but never played again except in tournaments. He had pretty much turned into a bar pool player and I stuck to the big tables. He could and would play on the big tables, but seemed to prefer the bars. You are right about mixing it up. He was playing someone at the Stagger Inn and they were arguing over a bad hit or something. Kenny said he might lose the argument but he would win the fight & the other guy gave in. I saw quite a bit of him in the late 80's when I was managing a mortgage co. down in San Diego and was playing around the rooms and joints down there. He was a good guy and an old time pool scuff and I was sad to hear he had passed. John Henderson

Back in the 80's we were in Odessa and had our eye on a guy who was pretty wealthy and we knew he would GO OFF.

Kenny took a couple of shots and started his drunk routine and the guy seemed to be biting on it.

Next thing you know Kenny is throwing 100 dollar bills in the air and right on the border of reallyinsulting the guy. It hit me, he wasn't faking being drunk anymore, he was hammered. Kenny got pretty loud and we were up about $1000 when the bartender had had enough and told us to get out. I don't hink He would have ever swung at me, but he was hot and it was tough getting him out of there.

We were in this white van of Kennys and I finally got him in the back where he quickly passed out. We had an appointment the nest day in a town about 50 miles away and decided since it was late anyway to head on over.

I hit the interstate and had driven about 20 miles when Kenny started SCREAMING for me to pull over. I hit the shoulder of the road and the side door flew open and Kenny dove out and rolled about 20 feet down hill and laid there, sick as a dog, throwing up all over West Texas.

About that time, you guessed it, a State Trooper pulled up behind us, Lights on to see what was going on. He asked me if I had been drinking and I told hem no and gave him a very short version of what had happened. The trooper was ok though and said, well come on and lets geet him back in the van.

We got him up the hill when Kenny fell back down again and started throwing up again. He had that funny voice and I think the trooper was getting a kick out of it. Fianlly we got him back up to the van and got him inside when Kenny strted asking the trooper if he played pool and gambled at it. I was praying that he would pass out again.

The trooper was ok though and since I hadn't been drinking I guess he tusted me to take care of him and keep him out of trouble. He started to leave when Kenny grabbed his hand and began to thank him over and over and over again. The trooper really did seem amused by it all.

He started to step away when Kenny suddenly grabbed him and said, "Officer, please be careful right there, that first step is a mother******!!!" The trooper nearly fell on his ass laughing.

Kenny was one of a kind. We had lots of fun together and always made money.

Santa Fe and Taos

There is no action in either Santa Fe or Taos. Drive an hour to ABQ and head to the Corner Pocket on Lomas. Ask for Wilfred. You will get played by him or another half dozen guys in that room.

And yes, that is where Louie Roybal usually plays as well.

The Catamount is fairly expensive and the tables are not very well taken care of. If you want a 9' it's the only place though. There are a few bar boxes in Taos, can't remember where.

If you want some action in Santa Fe, I have a couple of horses (not from Albuquerque) that might be interested. PM me if you are looking to match up.

Louie Roybal, if he is still playing, at the Corner Pocket in Alb. He has to be in his 70's, but I bet he still can play.

Watch out for the dog catcher there playing golf.
Wow! So many replies for NM...not too much pool in Santa fe/Taos, but definitely hit us up in Albuquerque. Yes, Louie is still here playing everyday at the Corner Pocket. He's 76 now and still kicking the youngsters asses! Personally, I play at Ramona Biddle's place, The Carom Club in downtown Abq. Yes, good one pocket games down here.

Not Much Pool

I returned from Santa Fe - Taos last Friday. Not much pool anywhere.

In santa Fe: Tha Catamount had 5/6 9 foot tables just been covered but not one in use, beers $4 a bottle. 5 other people in the place. I also went to Evanglino's he had 4 bar boxes downstairs and none in use. So much for Santa Fe. Boring.

In Taos: A little less if that's possible. I was in a nice place called Shadows it was like a Fox & Hound, upscale lot's of TVs, sports etc. Also $4 a beer. But no tables. So I say to the bartender it would be nice to have a couple of Gold Crowns in here. First I had to explain what a Gold Crown was, that's understandable but then what he sadi next is something I have not heard in a long time. Care to guess? He said "yea let's put some weapons in thier hands". So much for pool in Taos.
We did stop into a new resort they are still in the process of building in Taos. It is called the El Monte and the pictures is what I found. It is a beautiful Brunswick but do you see the same thing that I see is wrong with it?

Wilfred and his son Freddie played in both tournaments at Hard Times in Sacramento last week and both were in action quite a bit when the tournaments were not going on. I met Wilfred over 20 years ago when Poker Paul & I went through ABQ. He told me there wasn't much action now at the Corner Pocket & he had a great time out here. John Henderson
