Sarah Rousey comments on the Women's Worlds

LOL. thats the reply when you have nothing to say anymore

very good

LOL What else is there to say here Vin??? Shannelle is a "C" speed player playing in a "World Championship"...

You think it's fine, because she look's good.............
I don't think she has the right to play in this event........

Pretty cut, an dry......

it's a race to 5. who do you think a race to 5 benefits? the skilled or the unskilled player? don't you think there's a reason why it's a race to 5? or that the empress cup, another event shanelle played in, was a race to 3?

i saw shanelle play in the am open at vf a couple of years ago...if she's a C player now then she's made a huge jump in her game.

At the Empress Cup Tournament, the final match between Cha and Lee was race to 2 games, 2 sets. Split sets would have resulted in a one game sudden death playoff. Although Jannette Lee won again this year, it could have gone wrong for her if she had made any mistakes.

Short races are great opportunities for the lesser skilled player.

I for one don't like short races, specially if we are talking about so called World Championships.

Anyone @ anytime can win a race to "5".....Longer races always go to the better player.....

Check out all the post, they all pertain to "Shanelle" here...So who ever you are talking bout means nothing to me.....

but the thread topic isnt about shanelle. please rename the topic if its all just about shanelle :D

as far as i understand, its all about how the tournament sucks. and i do agree on most parts of it because i was there PERSONALLY :D

Yup,

I have beaten many pro players to five games ahead. I ran five racks on Ronnie Wiseman once - - - - - - then lost 11:5.

Guess if I lose some weight, get some hair transplants and a tan I will be getting a call from Matchroom real soon to be their token "hottie C-player" on the TV table at the next event they put on.

I am just waiting by the phone..........

Race to 5 was also used during the world pool championship before. These are men's division and 9 ball. More luck factor was involved. It was an issue but they still played.

I also would like to watch a longer race but it's shouldn't be a big deal whether it should be a long race or short race since first it's 10 ball wpa rules. It can make the better player at that moment to win. This should not be an excuse if someone lost or win.

The problem is that, they don't have the chance to warm up or to practice. Which could give them a harder time to perform their best.

Pertaining to Sarah's post I agree most of her post, specially to the tables/ venue condition. It could have been better for the players if they had a lounge and at least another practice table. The lights too were not at par.

Now for some C players who were able to join a championship, I think it's not an issue. This is the first time having a women's 10 ball championship. The event would grow in future years hopefully. I think if there were better players who were not able join it's either poor promotion or women don't think they have a chance. It's their fault if they think that way. I'm proud of Philippine's 11 year old who took the chance to qualify for the event and won. She at first didn't think she had the chance.

I suggest we just respect the current players who participated. They flew half way around the world just to participate and prepare for the championship. We don't have the right to belittle them.

IMHO.:)

I guess we will have to disagree then. I consider it to be an insult to go out of your way to insure that some players are part of the competition who don't belong there.

The ONLY exception to me is the players that are representing their region according to the WPA rules on doling out slots to the members of the WPA. Sometimes, as is the case with the woman from Africa, the best player is not world class. That's their choice to then accept the invitation and come and play and it's respected.

The event being new is not an excuse, both Dragon Promotions and the WPA are quite experienced now.

The fact is that by inviting or otherwise manipulating the roster to include players who don't have the game to be there AND then giving those players a lot of exposure it causes dissension among the other players who are world class. It causes tension and creates an emotionally charged situation that does not need to exist.

That is the central issue here.

IF at the Makabenta tournament last week Makabenta had put some fourth tier players that he handpicked into the field and put them on TV for the first two days and they were clearly not good enough to be there then I am sure that the attitude would be different.

Like I said earlier - make it a smaller field and put QUALITY on TV. Espn doesn't care who is on TV - they give you x-amount of time so use that time to showcase top quality players and relegate the puff pieces about c-players to filler. Make the races longer - a race to 7 in the prelims goes much faster among two A-players than does a race to five among two c-players.

Then everyone is happy and even forgiving if the equipment isn't quite as good as it should be.

Also I don't think that anyone is belittling the players here. We are criticizing the promoter for putting on a tournament with subpar conditions, manipulating the participation to include his pet players who don't have the game to be competitive, and using the event to publicize those players over more deserving, proven champions.

I guess the closest I have come is to say that I feel that out of self-respect a player who isn't world class should withhold themselves from what should be a world class event. But getting that "player" pass that says World Championship on it is an alluring prize of it's own. Charlie, you did make up some nice player passes for the players didn't you?

JB if some of the players were just hand picked or manipulated then I agree with you. The promoters should have done better. But if they won a qualifier they deserved to be there even if they play poorly on tv.

I actually liked that there were some "new" players who were at TV. I think it's a good exposure for them and good for pool.

Just a thought, some people here likes to watch players who were at B to A level, We like to see some misses too in a while it makes the game more interesting and exciting. Don't get me wrong I do like to watch quality matches, I learn from them a lot. But for entertainment purposes I like to have some suspense.

Maybe they are promoting women = entertainment?

That's exactly the point, that some players were hand-picked or "invited" in. No one has a problem with someone winning a bonafide qualifier to earn a spot.

I was at the Amway Cup and there was plenty of suspense between TOP PLAYERS.

Kelly Fisher was 6:1 ahead and on the hill against Gerda Hofstatter. Gerda comes back to win with some brilliant shots and two heartbreaking errors by Kelly. In the last rack both players played brilliant safeties and each kicked out of their opponent's safeties with kick shots that only master players know how to do. Gerda came up with a shot first and it was a tester jacked up over a ball and she nailed it to win the game and the set.

In the finals Karen Corr and Chou traded racks with Karen in the lead all the way till the end when a few misses and good outs from Chou put her on the hill first. In the last rack she runs too far on the seven and has to decide to be aggressive and bank it or go for a dicey safety. She banks it but lands on the end rail with the only shot being to shoot the 8 up the rail while jacked up to hold the cueball for position on the nine. I have seen far easier shots missed by top professionals.

Chou nails it and for $20,000 the cue ball drifts over for perfect position on the nine ball.

Great pool - great drama - great players - played live in front of a standing room only crowd and seen by people all over Taiwan and China.

ALL the matches on the TV table were between great players.

If I want to watch B players then I will go to the pool room. In no other sport that is televised are the subpar players allowed to get more airtime than then great players.

I know a little bit about promotion and a lot about self-promotion. I think most who know me here would agree on that. If I were here trying to turn el-cheapo vinyl cases into world class leather ones using pretty pictures and fancy words then I'd get called on it pretty quickly.

My advice is don't hype the tournament here with all sort of contrived "press releases" touting it as the greatest thing to happen to women's pool ever and then expect people to swallow a second rate product.

If you are that good of a promoter then promote a top shelf women's event on US soil and get ESPN to broadcast that live in the USA AND on ESPN Asia.

JB what I meant about the B and A player is that they are much more unpredictable. We used to bet on who gets the 5 ball on a C VS C match. It's much faster pace than waiting for a long race. Yes they belong to the pool room but if they happen to be on the tv table I will support them and cheer for them. There are players who rises from the occasion and make upsets.

So what have you done lately to promote and help put money in the girls pockets?

I know what I've done, nothing. So when I see someone actually trying to do something, even if it isn't done perfectly, I appreciate the effort.
