Sarah Rousey comments on the Women's Worlds

Pool needs to emulate golf. To do this we need professional players in nice clothing playing in professionally executed events.

Nice clothing is something along the lines of business casual with movement and comfort in mind. Nice clothing is NOT the most revealing blouse. Luxury, I have nothing against you but IMO you're a dirty old man :)

Professionally executed events are those run with separation of duties and without conflict of interest. Separation of duties means employees with clearly defined areas of responsibility. Player liason, referee manager, equipment manager, public relations/marketing manager, etc. This also means the director/president doesn't micromanage and lets his staff do what they're hired to do.

Conflict of interest... I'm sure I don't even need to explain how much it hurts the sport when an apparent dipshit director like CW invites D players to a world championship because he is also their manager. Credibility goes down the drain.

IMO CW is probably hoping to get away with it since he actually has payouts. He's essentially buying the right to be a dick and everyone defending him is apparently blind to this.

Also, IMO he's lucky to have gotten away with the alleged harrasment and assaults in the past. He's lucky nobody has pressed charges, and he's also lucky nobody's friend(s) have paid him a visit.

So basically you saying the tables weren't good, the conditions weren't good, the races were short but because it took awhile its okay, a girl that cant play and looks good was allowed to play in what was suppose to be the best of the best in womens pool and the refs werenot great but didnt make any big mistakes so they were okay.

Sound like because you were involved you are sugar coating a piss poor run tournament for the top women players.

Just because charlie talked some sponsors into putting big money up doesnt mean its a good tourney. Just means that charlie would sell out his fellow pool players to make some good money by putting them on crap tables, with short races, bad lighting, and a place that has leaks i mean wtf Jay. Get off charlies nuts because he ispaying you money you sell out.

I suppose the challenge of champions is a great tourney too ahhahaha..I mean they give 50k to a pool player its great too!!! races to 5 best 2 of 3 sets on buckets and they never even have the best players usually.

Well said - you think if all of these Pinoy table mechanics were on hand and there were only 5 tables, they would have been setup correctly BEFORE Jay had to point it out to them.

And matches take an hour only due to the quality of the majority of the players in the World Championship.

BTW - JB or someone that has seen her play, what would you rate someone like Shanelle's play - B player or below?

i actually like the dress code the way it is. most of the female players that seem to take their game seriously don't dress poorly. usually it's something that looks tasteful and comfortable. that's judging from the tv matches i've seen that is

I didn't get the impression that they were complaining about the overall dress code, just the revealing options that one inparticular chooses.

The women have always dressed better than the men (IMO) but they also have more options on different styles. Men are left with dress pants/khakis/polo & button down shirts.

There is one thing in the pool world that I can say CW made a positive impact with - UPA dress code. Pro tournaments prior to the UPA dress code were full of top ranked players in jogging suits. At one time I wasn't sure if Archer & Ellin owned anything else. :D

That's the question isn't it? Is it "good" for the players? Or is it just good for "some" players and not others.

Did I EVER ONCE say that I thought Charlie putting up a 75K tournament is a bad thing?

No, if you bother to read what I wrote then I said he is to be commended for creating a 20K payday for women players.

That doesn't mean I AGREE with the way the tournament is being run. Just in the same way that I have DISAGREED with how other tournaments have been run in the past.

Basically the attitude put forth by many here is that the participants of this and other events should either suck it up or choose not to play. That's all well and good and each person does have a choice to protest by non-participation.

However that is each individual's personal choice. And in the future some of them may decide to make that choice.

I, as a fan, can certainly voice my opinion here if I don't feel things are right. I happen to agree with Sarah's sentiments.

And I certainly believe that Edwin Reyes would have been against the favoritism and the fact that unqualified participants were "invited" over those who otherwise had to earn a spot. That, in fact, was one of the cornerstones of his platform against the Makebenta regime.

It's not good for the players when they play on subpar, to quote Jay Helfert "B-", equipment in a environmentally hostile arena. It's not good for the player's self-esteem when the best players are ignored in favor of staging what feels like a beauty pageant.

And seriously, five tables for eight groups? One practice table? That's an amazing lack of respect for the players you have in a WORLD Championship. But then again, all you have to do to get a WC is spend a little money with the WPA and bingo you can do what you want to.

Let's see, one player will get $20,000. The second place finisher will get $9000 and it's downhill from there. The hotel is a couple hundred a night, the flight was $1500 or so, days off work for a lot of the players amounts to more expense, do you honestly think that most of the participants will cover their expenses? How is a tournament with bad conditions, sexist attitudes, which puts horrible pool on TV in front of millions of casual viewers good for the players?

So, no, I don't think that a tournament where there is no entry fee except that you check your dignity at the door is a good thing for the players, at least not for the players who can actually play.

You think whoever walks out with the $20,000 is gonna say "wow, that tourney sure sucked"

When you get your noble tourney together to put cash in the girls pockets let them know. I'm sure they'll all run to play in it.

This is a really tough one.

It really sucks what you have to tolerate to be a professional pool player , man or woman. People are going to hate this I know but the simple fact is no one (in the grand scheme of things outside of other pool players) really wants to watch pool , therefore sponsors get little too nothing for thier money , therefore there is no money put into the game and no money to get into the pockets of the players that deserve it. Anyone one willing to put any money into a Tourny is going to have to cover every possible base to make it worth while to do so. Another unfortunate byproduct of the above is 'generally' what some of these people consider to be 'worth while'. Your going to have to try and capitalize on anything that will get people to watch whether it be good play , pretty women or whatever. Sometimes it's almost like a circus which is an absolute shame.

Now this is where I get flamed into oblivion . . .

This has been a fact of the game of pool forever. I know this is death to say but , why anyone would make pool thier primary source of income is beyond me and they really should have known better. I've been playing pool since I could reach the height of a table , before that really , and it has always been the same. The lives pool players have to lead to survive is nothing I would wish on anyone. I agree with ALL the complaints , seriously without question but these people made the career choice and have to consider this part of thier choice. I could have been a full time artist . . . and most likely been starving my whole life. I could have been actor and lived in the same car , there are alot of things I would have loved to do 'for a living' that I knew no one or at the very least an infinitesimally percentage of the participants do. So now , I hate my job and do all the other things for my own personal enjoyment and I'm sure have less to be sorry about. I made the choice to have a better living and the knowledge knowing I can provide a better life for my family. I know they are happier about it too. That is one more thing to love.

I see high level pool in a similar light to olympic sports. You train your entire life (gymnast , skater , etc) to try and be the best in the world knowing full well that there really is no 'career' there. You do it because you truly love the sport and have an undeniable burning deep inside to compete at it and show the world you are the best. These are all good and wondeful things but is that alone enough ? Only 'you' can make that decision and then 'you' must live with it.

I say all this with the absolute deepest respect and admiration for these people. Thier talent and devotion in the sport is awes inspiring. You all have my sincerest wishes for success and happiness and I pray that you get all you deserve and worked so hard for.

Jay.

So long as one or two people out of 40 something (the minority) are happy, then that makes every thing perfectly ok?

what kind of ca-ca is this?

A cold dose of reality in the middle of a pool forum? Don't be silly!

I wish I could disagree with some of the things you said. I can't.

No, but there's no entry fee and nobody forced anyone to go.

and so far we've only had 1 complaint.

I haven't seen any pics of ANY women in this tournament dressed inappropriately.

I do think it's unfortunate that there is so much attention being paid to sexiness.

Based on how round 1 finished I don't think it's fair to bash on any player just because they "APPEAR" to have been selected for their looks. Several of the best players who earned their way in played no better than the so called fluff.

I think having an event called a World Championship should require whoever is putting it on to meet certain criteria.

1) No "personal" invites. Only players who earn their way through a qualifing process, or else just have an "Open" with winner being World Champ.

2) Nice venue and equipment. Here the venue appears to be great for media and spectators but only so-so for players, equipment is a little subpar.

I'll give CW a thumbs up for having the event:thumbup2:. I give CW a thumbs down on his handling of the event:(. I give the PI thumbs up for having the event and everything surrounding the event:thumbup:.
I give Sarah a big hug for speaking her mind:hug:.

The travel costs for most of the women in this event are far greater than any entry fee he could've gotten away with charging.

So far only one has had the gumption to stand up and complain. Don't confuse fear of retribution (as CW is well known to do) with being happy with the event.

I asked this on Jays thread but haven't gotten a reply. Maybe someone who's there could answer. Did something happen with the girl from Singapore? She was seeded #23 and supposed to play Ga Young Kim (#10). The chart shows GYK getting a bye. If the girl forfeited or something shouldn't the #9 girl Y. Lin from TPE get the bye?

Here is the link to the chart...http://www.womensworld10ball.com/images/2009chart.jpg

That's about where I would put her. Maybe a low to mid B. Definitely not A.

I've never seen her play but there is no way she is a b player the way she is being described to play. at least not a b player as I remember it. She sounds like an average c.

thanks for the explanation Jay. be nice to hear from other player or fans there watching. Obviously sarah's blog is little one sided, maybe a mor objective point of view?
sarah, i think u may be a little hot writing that right after ur match losses, which is understandable.
but my friends over there telling me that the event is really fantastic and many players are having a great time. so the two stories are really contrasting

Don't forget that Jay is actually getting paid by CW/Dragon for doing a job for them, as tournament director.

No surprise if he sees things a little different than Sarah.

Roy - likes both Sarah and Jay, and thinks the truth is somewhere in the middle ;)
