Schmelke's P090 Complete Brass Joint

David Schmelke, of Schmelke Cues has said (in an email today) that the firm is no longer offering the Uni-Lock Radial pin as an option for their cues. I was hoping order a Schmelke M Series with that joint because I have another cue with the Uni-Lock Radial, and I like commonality.

I would like some advice concerning Schmelke’s Brass Joint. It is supplied on many of Schmelke’s cues. The outside diameter of that joint is 0.90-inch, quite large considering many cues come with 0.84-inch joints. It’s identified as P090 Complete Schmelke Brass Joint.

I would like to hear from those who have actually used a cue (Schmelke or other) with the above joint. What are your observations (sounds visual) of that joint? And if you were to choose another joint for an M Series cue which one would it be, and why?

That's an old school joint....not ideal I think. Many Schmelke cues have had it but I don't think it has made much of a reputation.

I have shot with them. Not impressed.

I would vote 3/8x10

The Brass Joint might be fine but you won't have any resell value. I would never buy one unless it was really cheap.

3/8x10 I've always like it.

I do admire the way he shares information about cue making. One can learn a lot by looking at his webpages and his You Tube videos.

I will still take into consideration forthcoming comments regarding the pins for an M Series Schmelke.

My first cue was a schmelke with that style joint. I freaking hated and still hate that cue. It was not a well playing cue, even though the fit and finish was of high quality. The screw inside the butt section of the joint actually worked loose over the years and I had to install a slightly larger threaded screw in it's place. The finish also flaked off of the joint allowing it to tarnish and look horrible. I got this cue 26 years ago and this information may not be relevant now. I hear people like their cues and many makers use their blanks so they can't be that bad, I would avoid that joint, though.
 
What about their Joint #7 option: "3/8 diameter, 8 tpi surgical pin"? That looks like the Uniloc radial knock off pin.

I'd probably go with the 3/8-10 like the other posters. That pin is available everywhere, and on any aftermarket shaft as well.
 
First rate information from all, much thanks. Some of the posts have address issues I would not have though of, or known about until I had gotten the cue.:eek:

I knew someone a long time ago who tried to sell me an old-at-the-time Schmelke with that joint. Reminded me of plumbing fittings....
 
Schmelke's super brass joint i found to kill alot of sense of hit in the butt for a playing cue. However i always found that the joint worked great for a break cue. The joint adds forward balance to the cue and i always got great power for the break with it. In fact i intend to order a basic cue from schmelke with their brass joint, and with a purple heart shaft with a break taper for a new break cue.

Is there a picture of this joint by the way? I didn't see one on their site. Just curious now. Is it one of those crazy ugly double threaded joints like McDermott or Viking offered?
