Schmidt vs. Sigel - A Reality?

Here's a portion of the latest email from the IPT:

Here are some important announcements from the International Pool Tour:

The last IPT Ultimate 8-Ball free broadcast was a big success. Austin Murphy took his shot at living legend Efren Reyes. While the balls didn't roll well for Murphy at the beginning of the match, he warmed up and showed the world that he can compete with those at the top. The Under-card match between World Champion Oliver Ortmann and John Schmidt gave the great game of 14.1 Straight Pool some wide-spread exposure. During the match, pool legend Mike Sigel (one of the commentators) called out John Schmidt (the winner) and claimed to be able to beat Schmidt at Straight Pool. Though Schmidt responded with respect (click here to read more about this story), he invited Sigel to step up any time. So you, the viewers, can now vote on whether or not you want to see this match-up take place as the under-card match for the live June 24th broadcast.

I would love to see that match! Schmidt versus Sigel. Now that would be a great pool extravaganza for sure! :)

I read something about this in one of John's posts in another thread. I think it was in his lessons at his house thread. I think it is going to happen.

If they do it in California again, who do I have to schmooze to get in? John? Help me out, man. I know you'll have plenty in your entourage, but I don't take up much bleacher space. ;)

if you look on the ipt website they have a poll going with a 75-25% in favor of the match. Its happening.

This is one match that I really want to see. Two straight pool champions duking it out. Don't think Sigel ain't got a little fight left in him, and John Schmidt, of course, is always a pleasure to watch when he's on a field of green. I can't wait! :)

JAM, what is Keith's high run in straight pool? Did he ever get into the game?

I went to the last one and would love to be ringside for this one.

My wish is for it to be a long race but I doubt that they would do that with the time restrictions.

Heck I hope John and Gary challenge Mike to a TAR event in Victorville. I think Gary's would be packed. I would purchase my VIP spot early!

Sounds like a great idea for a match to me. It could be dubbed "The Mouth vs. The Machine"....or "The Mouth Vs. Mr. Fourhundred":D

You know, I never asked him, but I will later today when I see him. I'm deadlining on an emergency job I received this morning, a press briefing with audio that I can hardly hear, sounding like the speakers are on the Space Shuttle.

One thing I do know is that Keith can play all games, which surprised me. One time a local named Pooky challenged Keith to a snooker game, $300 a pop, to which Keith accepted. I had never seen Keith play snooker before since we had been together, and needless to say, I was a nervous nellie. I asked him, "Keith, I've never seen you play snooker at all. Aren't you nervous playing Pooky?" He replied, "What you gotta remember is that Pooky has gotta play me." That didn't make me feel any better, never seeing Keith hit one snooker ball in my life.

Surprisingly, Keith pocketed those snooker balls like they had eyes. Pooky and Keith went back and forth, but when the dust settled, Keith came out a couple dimes on top. :)

The thing that distinguishes Keith and players from his era is that in order to survive, you must be able to play ALL games, not just 9-ball or straight pool or one-pocket.

I see many players from overseas, Asian-Pacific Islander and European nations, who can excel in one game, but they can't play all games the way some of the American road warriors can.

Yep, I'm bragging. Can't wait to get bashed by the JAM haters.

IMHO, one of the worst things to happen to Captain Hook was going with KT's nickname "The Mouth". I hope he goes back to calling himself Captain Hook. It is much less annoying than hearing that numskull Trudeau calling him the Mouth.

JAM, would you mind asking a few questions?? I'd like to know...

1) Obviously, his 14.1 high run
2) Snooker high-break
3) Other than himself, who he considers the toughest gambler (all-around, all games) of all time
4) Other than himself, who he considers the toughest tourney player of all time
5) Who the best gambler is today

Hopefully you don't mind--- I'm dying to hear his thoughts. I like asking the legends these questions and see who they point at. It's fascinating.

THANKS-
Dave

Have you ever met Mike? Or played in a room near him? Or watched a match live when he's playing? If ever there was an accurate nickname, that it! Having said that, I will root for Mike. Both John and Mike are friends. There are just too many posters who seem to feel that Mike is ALL bravado. The only problem is too short a match.

I know Mike. I have seen him in pool rooms, watched him play, and spent time with him in Vegas. I know he talks, but Captain Hook is a much better moniker than The Mouth. The Mouth has no pool meaning whatsoever. It is more BS in my opinion.

If I were to promote a match between two equally talented players, I'd want to create some buzz. Ask the "man on the street" who he would rather watch. Mike "captain hook" Sigel or Mike "the mouth" Sigel? Judging from the attention Mike "the mouth" gathers on the World Poker Tour, I would guess people want to see the "the mouth". How many of the current generation remember why he was nicknamed "captain hook" anyway? Regardless, lets agree we both know Mike and his (dis)abilities.

Yes, us railbirds would really love to here what Keith says on those things.
Good questions.
Also, who were his toughest opponants? And how would he rank the all time top 5 in 9 ball?

Please see if he can answer this for us?

Hi, Dave. I've run 150 balls playing straight pool and I stopped. I used to play more straight pool when I was a kid, but we used to play a game called pay ball on a snooker table where I ran 21 balls, rack up, short rack, six balls at a time, pay on every ball, and I run 21 balls which is pretty good on a tight snooker box. It's hard enough to make a ball on the break, much less run 21 balls.

Toughest gambler? Let's see. That's hard to say. Billy Incardona is a pretty shrewd businessman. Bucktooth is another one. There's guys that are good guys to gamble with. There's a lot of those. I can't name them all, but as far as the tougher ones, those two top my list.

The toughest tournament player of all times that I've run into has to be Earl Strickland. I cannot tell you how many times I've been the bride's maid to Earl in a tournament. Mike Sigel is another good tournament player. Nick Varner has always played steady in tournaments. I can't leave out Jimmy Rempe. He was around that era as well.

The best gambler today? As far as I can see, none of them. I like Ricky B. down there in Mobile. He owns a pool room down there. He's a good guy to gamble with, if you can get him down.

As far as people to gamble with, I have always been a firm believer that you got to make that happen yourself. When people say that there is no action, that is a farce because I've been in a lot of spots where they say there's no action, and then all of a sudden, I'm playing 500 or 1,000 a game. Where there's a will, there's a way! I just try to make things happen, no matter where I am. That is where some pool players' lack of skill comes into play because most of them are robots and have no mouthpiece and can't get the job done when it comes to action. A lot of them will come up to me to try to stir up the action. I wonder why! :p
