am i better off spending 700 on a nice schon that i think looks cool. or spending 700 on a custom cue from? (heres where you fill in the maker and explain the benefits as ive never had either)

thank you

Thats a tough question to answer for someone.I'll try but heres what I'm thinking.

If I'm getting a Schon I'm not spending 700 on it.They make a real nice cue,but I can get a used 1 for half the price.

If I am spending 700 on a Schon,I'm getting a Predator 314 shaft and 6 points with veneers and matching ringwork maybe some inlays

I just ordered a new Schon, with the regular shaft and an OB-1.
Can't wait to see how it plans compared to my Lucasi hybrid.
Most of the comments on AZB seem to favor the Schon.

funny there happens to be a really nice 1 in the for sale threads for 700 and it fits my description pretty well

yeah, im not looking for any ole schon. im looking for something fancy. i can probably get a better deal, but i havent seen anything real fancy for less then 4. im wondering if 700 is better spent elsewhere on the csutom market.

Please find me a nice Schon for $350.

What is "nice"? They are all made the same, although some will end up with a hit that one person may like over another. You can get a brand new Schon for that much.

For anything over $400 I'd be looking at a "name" cue rather than from a company like Schon, Joss, McD, etc...

But there is not much that fancy inlays and points do for me, I go for good looking wood and a hit/shaft feel that suits me.

my confusion is custom cues go anywhere between 300 dollars to100K. im trying to establish how a 700 dollar custom cue, would compare to a fancy goodlooking schon, something with a suggested retail price of 1,200, that i can pick up for 600-700 hundred. id like to know if anything 700 would compare in both feel and look.

where should i spend my money. seems like a tons of schons have been bought, should i risk the 700 on any ole custom cue maker, and it appears there are to many to name or would i have to spend more for a reliable custom cue maker.

So hit a few balls with some different sticks and see what feels good. If you have been playing long enough you can adapt to anything but also know what feels just right for you. Untill you get there its experimentation.

If you know exactly what you want in a cue, then you're better off going to a cuemaker and working with him to get exactly what you want.

If you buy a Schon that you really like the look of, then you'll be buying a solid well made cue.

I've played with Schon for well over ten years. I have owned atleast 15 of them and have never been disappointed. With that said, I have played with many other cues that I just have never really liked. Bought and sold numerous custom cues that never really played like a Schon. I have come to realize that Schon is the cue for me.

I would go for the Schon. You can buy a super new Schon shaft or many other makes from Seberts if need be. Being that you can customize the cue yourself. Shafts an wraps an tips an you will have a finely tuned cue of your liking. I would look for a used Schon here for $350 plus and go from there. Hope I helped.

You're way better off getting a custom cue! You get a cue hand made to your exact specifications as opposed to some "assembly line" production cue. No contest!

It's hard to beat JJ prices, he'll upgrade the shaft to OB or Predator if you like.
As well he'll drop the price 100 as fast as you can drop your hat.
Large selection to boot. Schon Cues LTD, Schon Cues STL, and his on sale line of schons

Can you find a great custom cue for $700 (especially if it's made to order for YOU, vice getting it second hand from a collector/flipper)? Yes. Will it shoot as good or better than a Schon? Possibly yes, maybe no. Can you get a nice Schon for $700? Yes...new low-mid end, second hand high end. Will it shoot good? Absolutely.

If you want a Schon, get a Schon. If you want a custom cue, have a well regarded maker make you one. The bottom line is any good, well made cue in the hands of a better than recreational/occasional player can be dialed in and made to work well for them. The key (really enjoyable) part is to get something you're personally proud of. Then you'll be happy. Meucci people became Meucci people because they got one they were proud of and made it work for them...there's no convincing them that they're junk. Schon lovers love them because they saw them at a tender age in the hands of a respected road warrior, thought, "man, someday..." and then someday came. The pride of finally getting a cue you want is a pretty special pride. If you have to ask opinions from a group of strangers on whether a Schon is the way to go, you'll likely never really appreciate one and are better off getting a custom cue you'll really be proud of.

In my opinion (since you asked), there are two types of pool cue owners...very happy Schon owners and players that have never tried or owned one. Never met a third category...

If I were you I would visit www.seyberts.com, www.ozonebilliards.com, or www.billiardwarehouse.com to see the selections of different Schon cue models. There are numerous Schon models to select from in your price range. Personally in your price my favorite model is the CX80. I love that design. Find a Schon design you like in your price range and go for the purchase. Ive had a Schon cue for 29 years and it remains one of my top favorite cues.

On the other hand if you cant find a Schon model in your price whose design you dont like, I would also look at Pechauer and Jacoby cues. They also produce wonderful cues in your budget.

And for last resort, if the urge to get a more limited custom cue is just totally overwhelming I would suggest Bryan Mordt. He could make a wonderful cue in your budget. It may be a bit more simpler design wise but he makes a beautiful cue.

Whatever cue you choose to get, allow time to adjust to it from whatever your currently playing with. Experiment with different tips to learn how much difference they make in the feel of the cue til you find one you truly like. And finally, take complete pride in the cue that you own.
