Schon piloted joint question

Is there a difference in the feel when you use a standard 5-16-14 Predator 314-2 shaft VS the Predator 314-2 with the Schon piloted joint and logo when using a Schon cue?

As to difference in "feel" I seriously doubt you're going to notice any difference at all.
Wouldn't worry about it.
Now, will the shaft sit more straight on the cue?
That I don't know but I think the need to have to order a Schon specific joint was
taken care of a few years ago and you can go with the regular joint today.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Schon

My Schon is an SH-206 LTD made in 1993. It has the pin with the divet in the tip. I just didn't know if the brass pilot would make it feel more solid and lessen vibration.

not to hijack the thread, but i figured we have a lot of schon enthusiasts checking it out.....will the mezz 5/16-14 united joint fit on a schon butt?
thanks,
Tim

I've owned both the actual schon pilot, and the aftermarket pilot. If you don't get the actual schon pilot it will rattle itself loose on occasion. I would find myself tightening the joint during my pre shot routine which sucks. Hit will be the same, it will just not be as well put together with the smaller pilot. Big difference imo.

It will, unless there's a problem with the size of the pilot. If there is, your friendly neighborhood cue repair person can fix it for you.

I did not feel the difference between standard and schon pilot, dont know why people go crazy and always try to find LD shaft with schon pilot

I've had several shafts on my Schon's with a standard 5/16x14 joints
and I've never ever noticed this.
Never, not on one shaft.
And some were not even piloted.

Just to confirm from my experience as well - no difference in feel between piloted and non-piloted, the after market piloted shafts don't even make contact with the inside of the joint until the last minute. I just always make sure to tighten the shafts on pretty good and have never had one come loose until it's time to break it down.

And yes, the Mezz 5/16x14 shaft fits a Schon perfectly.

Ok, I should have said on several occasions I have had the cue loosen with the smaller pilot. Feel, definetly not. But if I were shopping for a new 314 2 i'd be picky and get the actual schon piloted shaft. imo

I can't help but think there was something else that was wrong.

I've discussed this hundreds of times, and not once have I seen what you're talking about.

I have seen, probably hundreds of times, cues that will loosen as you play, but 100% of the time that issue was corrected just by facing the shaft and or the butt of the cue. If the faces aren't flat and clean, then the friction needed to hold them tight is not there, and they will loosen when the ball impact relieves some of the pressure on the faces.

Schon butt & Predator shafts

I have three Schon butts and original shaft, a 314, 314/2, and a Z shafts. As long as the joint is kept clean I have had no problems with the Predator shafts.

I purchased a Schon cue with a 5/16x14 predator 314 2 and it didn't quite fit right. The threading of course was right, but if you were to run your finger between the butt and the shaft there was kind of an overhang on one side and an indentation on the other side, meaning it was off center just slightly. I also noticed that the pilot on my original schon shaft is longer than the generic 5/16x14 predator 314 2 pilot. This in my mind was the problem. When I would screw on the actual schon shaft it would get real tight when the pilot made its way into the butt. The pilot fit VERY snug against the inside wall around the pin and thus provided a perfect fit. The generic pilot is much shorter and didn't go down as deep into the butt and didn't fit as flush with the side walls.

Anyway long story short I sent back the generic predator 314 2 and bought the one with the ACTUAL schon joint and it fit flawlessly. Unfortunately for me though that shaft was also warped upon delivery and I ended up just saying screw it and have been playing with the regular schon, which is a great playing cue.
