Schon STL versus Predator 5k

I am in the process of purchasing a new pool cue. I currently shoot with a 15 year old Schon. Through my research Predator looks like they make a nice cue and I like the 5K series. I have read quite a few reviews in forums that people do not like Predator cues because they are used to their current. Through reading I know it will take some getting used to but in the long run will help.

Does anyone have an opinion with choosing a Predator 5k versus a Schon STL? Or buying a Schon and changing the Shaft to a Predator 2nd Generation?

People are opinionated strongly one way or the other on Predator 314 shafts; some feel like they can't live without it, some feel like it kills their game.

Why not try one out for an hour and see if you like it? Nobody here can tell you over the internet if you will like it shaft or not, and finding someone with a 314 shaft or Predator cue is not a tall order.

As far as status goes, a Schon is a finely crafted production cue, where Predator cues, IMO are overpriced production cues that Falcon makes.

Any you can always get a 314 with match joint rings for your favorite Schon, like I did for my Viking and Samsara. They only cost me in the low two hundred dollar range for each, and I couldn't be happier with them.

Schon...

...if it were an older Predator, I would say a toss-up. Schon cues are crafted in the US by Evan Clark. They are not a huge company as one might think. Evan is involved with every cue. The new Predator 5K series are NOT made by Falcon in Canada. They apparently had a falling out with each other and Predator is now made by an Asian company. I am not sure which one, some folks have said the same one that makes Helmstetter cues, but I am not certain. It has been difficult to obtain the info, which is one reason I don't care for the new series as much.

In the 90s Schon and Meuccis were the players cues,i think that Schon is top notch for a production type cue,i would go with the Schon and possibly get a predator shaft if you dont like the hit.

Good info, thanks for the correction. I hate passing around misinformation.

I played with a Schon STL20 LTD that is pretty old. I have an email from Evan Clarke that said he made about 2 as LTD before he formalized his LTD rules and he liked it so much that he continued to make it. He aslo told me at the expo that is was one of the first cues he made when he got started. Anyway i bought a new Schon at the expo last year and to me it plays just as well as the old one i have. I put an older preditor shaft on both cues and really like it. I have very good cueball control with them. Then I shot with my friends new Pred. with the Pred 2 shaft and it dosent hit as well as mine but its just what i feel in my stroke. It kinda feels spungy to me. It is a tuff dission but i would go with the Schon for the money.
