Scoring Beads - length, height, distance?

Sorry for being redundant here but you can clamp rods on the chains pretty easily. The advantage to using rods here is, you're not messing with the integrity of your light fixture since you don't have to get the rods tight. Just go to Home Depot with a bead on hand and find a rod that's thin enough for the bead to slide. I think 1/4" will do it but I can't remember. As well, the Home Depot folk are usually very helpful about giving you ideas on how to clamp the rods on a chain. It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to set up.
How difficult is the metal rod to cut?

I tried a different approach that I built over 20 years ago for my father. I used threaded rod and nuts and installed into a shelf. I did have to enlarge the holes in the beads with a drill, but no age and the threads keep the beads in place and move smoother than u might thinkView attachment 412253
Sorry it's upside down

Jems,

Thanks for the pic, I don't mind flipping it on my PC to look - cool idea making a running shelf from it.

That's a really LONG configuration too, what is that a 12 ft span?
Nicely done!

Beneath_the_sur,

Surprised - you make that look easy! Looks like it works well. What is your total length, about 7, 7.5 ft?

I don't remember and can't find my tap measure
I have 2 sets of these cheap ones
I took off all the black to keep them the same color for each player, keep track of innings and points

It's works well I believe because of the string, it's not as slick as a steel wire and holds them nicEly

I simply tied a knot at each end
Then layer it out straight and measured the length from hoop to hoop on the end pieces

I think it was in the 71-72inch range but can't say for sure

I too was suprised how well it worked

What I did is mount hanging brackets on an 8ft stick of leftover baseboard from the walls - so matches the room. Beads are strung on wire, board is hung on studs.

I did get that green-vinyl coated clothes line to use originally, but then found out that the inner beads are drilled smaller than the outer bead I carried with me to the hardware store (grrrr) - they don't fit even though the outer beads slide easily.

Anyway you can see most of how I did it from the pics...

I like the line with much less slack. Less chance of beads moving on their own.

The beads behave very well - slide easy & stay put.

If I want a tighter line, all the hard work is already done and I just need to restring it using a turnbuckle I've already got for this purpose. I didn't use it this time because I felt it was unnecessary.

To my OP:

...

They will be near the wall that parallels the right side of the table, near the foot end.

  • I'm thinking a foot down from the 9 ft ceiling,
  • probably about 9 inches from the wall (6 ft + from table).
  • I think I need to make the line about a foot longer than all the beads
...

About 7 1/2 ft from floor, only about 3" from wall, 8 ft board, Ideal might have been 7 1/2 ft.

My Beads

Here is what I did with the beads. It's very similar to what JEMS did in a prior post.

The last one I made was with 1/8'" cold roll steel rod and I chased threads on both ends so nuts could be used to tighten the rod. IIRC I used a 5-40 die. Worked great

I found the best way to hang my scoring beads was to use the indestructible parachute cord found at your neighborhood Home Depot/Lowe's that can easily be coordinated with the pool room - since it comes in 5 different colors. The cord thickness holds the beads in place slightly wherever they are moved along its length. I did tidy up the holes in the beads real quick using a drill bit and they turned out silky smooth!
