Ok, I went on vacation to Denver. One of my best friends works for Carmelo Anthony. We hung out at his huge house and he has pool tables. One on the bottom floor and the other on the top floor. For those who don't know who he is: He is the forward on the Denver Nuggets NBA basketball team. Needless to he's got money. What I don't understand is why when you purchase a couple of nice tables, do they still insist on putting cheap cloth on it. No Simonis on either one. I am pointing the fingers at the people who sold the tables. I don't expect Carmelo to know anything about pool equipment, but if I were to sell him a table(or two), I would want him to have the best. Right? After all Simonis is the best and he would certainly want the best. BTW he's got a Jacoby cue '04.

What does your friend do for him? Also, can Carmelo play at all? I'd guess a lot of the pro athletes have tables, or 2, in their homes but I've often wondered if any of them can actually play. They all have other talents in which they could probably play pro, such as baseball and football, but what about pool? Peace, and thanks for the story, John.

Hay of them get to fill up there gamerooms ..And show look i have a table in my house ..And can't play a lick...

My friend is Carmelo's personal assistant. He makes sure things go smoothly on a daily basis. Also he cooks for him. That's how they met. He used to be the chef at a fine dining place in downtown and Carmelo would frequent the place. That is his first passion and Carmelo loves his cooking. To be honest, when I was there Carmelo was on the road and I never got a chance to meet him. I know, I know. Fish story right? That's what I thought when my friend told me who he was working for. But low and behold when I got there. He picked me up in his(Carmelo's) BMW 745. And sure enough as I was there he still had to work so I hung out at Carmelo's house while my friend did his daily thing on the pc, booking tickets and making sure everything was fine while he was away. And what a house he has. Man it's beautiful. Need pics to prove it? Let me know. I got'em.(Not you Rude Dog. I know you believe me.)

About him playing. I don't know but he and my friend was talking about flying Rodney and Robb up there for lessons. That would be a sight huh?

I've heard of stories where the salesperson is so paranoid of losing the sale, that they will actually undersell. Also, if he bought his table from one of those "Pool and Spa" places, they are probably not as familiar with the better equipment as someone in a pool hall.

Good point. Still bothers me though.

I've had this happen to me - I was passing a new Pool/Gameroom store and thought I'd have a quick look around. A salesman pounced me so I pointed at the Brunswick Montebello (One of my favourite non-commerical table designs) on display and asked him how much it was for a 9' version. His answer was "Why do you want a 9' table" and I had to argue with him for 5 minutes before he would deign to give me a quote.

I think Marrissa is right that they are hoping not to scare away a potential sale with a high price, but I also think that the majority of sales staff you meet in a retail location like this are not serious Pool players themselves and have no idea what a serious player wants. For example I know someone who recently went out and bought a brand new 9' Gold Crown IV direct from an authorized Brunswick dealer. I asked him how he had the pockets setup (I.E. How tight, what angles) and he told me they never even asked him what he wanted.

I guess maybe Brunswick don't have any options, but you'd think, given that the Gold Crown is usually only selected by serious players looking for a tournament-style setup, there would be some choices even if they don't offer them on furniture-style tables. They'd probably be happy to sell the Gold Crown with regular felt if you don't bother to ask for Simonis.

A few pros that have played around the L.A. area can play a bit. The best was probably Manny Pacquiao, the Filipino boxing champ. A few others that had some playing ability were Gary Payton (he said Jordan likes to play also), Michael Finley, and Lennox Lewis to name a few.

I wouldn't have posted this info....

ARM9BALLER:

I would not have posted this info here. Your friend (Carmelo's Assistant) could get fired. I wouldn't like to have someone I don't know, hang around my house while I'm not there, or use my possessions without my permission. Use my personal car to pick up a friend I don't know? Hell no.

I would delete this post if I were you.

I'm jealous. I'm a big fan of Syracuse basketball, and Carmelo was, without question, the reason they won it all in 2003.

Also, I don't think a slow, nappy cloth makes any difference to anyone but a serious player. For most, as much pleasure can be derived from playing on a second-rate cloth as playing on Simonis 860.....as long as the table is good.

LOL. He knew I was coming into town. Actually told my friend that he was sorry that he wouldn't be there to meet me. Fired? I think not. One of the many reasons why my friend got this gig is that he trusts him enough to be around his personal possessions and to take care of things. As for the cars? That's an everyday thing for them. Thanks for your concern though, I appreciate it. ARM

That is good to know. These days people get fired for just about anything...

There is actually a possible reason to put on slow (and cheap) cloth. You don't see the roll-offs as easily. This will make the table look better to people who don't know the game if the table is on a floor/carpet that is still settling.

And without looking at the receipt, I don't think you know that the cloth was cheap ;) .

Thanks Bob. That makes more sense than anything I could've come up with. They both are on carpet too. ARM

Cool ARM

It would be cool if it worked out for Robb and Rodney.
I will take a look at the pics if you send them. You know I believe
you.

Not too long ago I saw where Carmelo was living in a huge apartment
building down near the arena. Did he go ahead and get himself a house or is he still there. It was on "Cribs" and he said he was going to be looking.

Nice vacation.

Did RJ ever head out looking for some 1hole action?? I forgot to get back him him?

I'll send pics to you when I get home from work.

Yeah Carmelo moved away from downtown. My friend showed me where he used to be. The town is soo big and the "lofts" are so small and expensive. I'm sure his wasn't small but compared to his house it probably was.

RJ is staying local here bettering his game. Haven't talked to him about going out looking for some action though. I need to get with him for some more 1hole lessons though.

"from way downtown"

I've read somewhere that Reggie Miller can break and run out. Maybe Jeanette Lee said it (she's from Indy even) but I don't remember.

Perhaps this is why Fred quotes him in his signature (not likely).

Man he probably don't even use the rake. Just stretches all the way across the table. ARM

I tried to play Jordon a few times when he was with the Birmingham Barrons but he would not bite. I did see one guy beat him out of a little but that was the only time. I think if you were to catch him at his house or a friends
or in his element he would lose more. He knows that most of the guys
could play and did not have his kind of $$$$.
I also tried to play Laura Davies from the LPGA. Her back was bothering her and she would not play. She did say that she liked snooker and
liked to play pool. She seemed real competetive.

In college I used to play with Wesley Persons. He is a NBA guy but I am not sure if he is still playing or not. He was last year. Nice guy. He knew better than to gamble with us then.
I remember Kirby Puckett used to have his 8ball event every year. Tons of
stars in those. Some played okay.
ESPN also had some type of deal with football players being paired with a
Pro in a scotch doubles event. IMO it was alot of fun to watch. Most of the
football guys could not play at all. A couple times there were dead combos
or banks and the Pros would coach the players. I can still remember the
looks from the football guys when they worked. I thought the event was a
good one. Might have been a charity event.
