Screen Names & Real Identity

While

I might not have a problem with that, you always run the chance of some psycho poster getting into it with someone, and then just happens to be going through the other poster's town, or makes a trip there, and causes more trouble when they stalk or track down the other poster, maybe even killing them. So, because of that, usernames are good.

Or some guy tracking and stalking some woman on here.

What I do think should be done is to verify real name and address by Mike when users sign up. This would cut down on trolls, and if things got out of hand, he could address it to each party. It could also be used to prevent multiple signons that are, in fact, the same person. I have run across sites that verify your identity using a driver's license file, so that could be one solution when signing up.

The responsible posters usually don't say anything they aren't willing to backup in person, but there are some, with an agenda, of just trying to irritate people, and know they can hide behind the anonymous username.
These people usually have insecurities and many issues to deal with in real life, let alone here.

I, myself, have a temper, which flares a little sometimes, usually after someone has repeatedly stepped all over my toes many times, so if I ever jump up and tell you you got the 7, you do have it, but you are going to have to pony up if we play it ...... LOL

Keith Crawford, originally from Asheville, now in Raleigh. Hey, all during high school and college I was called the Crawfish. One night I got the opportunity to use it. Now, before I tell this story, let me preface it by saying that it is not an open offer to the Oyster....... I was in Brass Tap one night when the "Australian Oyster" walked in and played in our weekly tournament. Even Johnny said you could win the US Open before you could win this tourney. Well, the fellow was trying to talk up some action. Two or three people offered some hundred and two hundred dollar sets. Hell, I'd never heard of him. The guy sounded like he was trying to talk us out of playing by explaining that we didn't know who he was. "I'm the Australian Oyster." I asked around and still to this day, I don't know what he's won, or who he'd beaten to make me feel so shaky. I was just gonna give him a little action. But he just kept saying he was the Australian Oyster. "Well I'm the Carolina Crawfish. $200 or not?" The name stuck. For all I know, he might have drilled me, but living in Raleigh we see quite a few players that can string a few racks together. The Carolinas are tough if you're actually trying to make any cash.

I know a fellow who was stalked some time ago and beaten up, in a public place. His real name was splashed in different places online, which made it easy for someone to figure out who he was, get a picture of him, and mug him unexpectedly. Retaining a degree of anonymity is probably a good thing for most people; never know when some wacko or sicko or criminal will decide it's their turn to go after someone. Celebrities often have bodyguards, for good reasons....
There's only three other people out there wiht my name....

Thanks Joey, I am truly impressed, however, now I am also very very hungry!!!!!!:D

I actually spent a little time at Ft. Polk, back in the 1980's, and man it was not very much fun. Twenty three years active duty and I only made it to three places in the USA, Ft. Stewart, Ft. Polk, and Ft. Lewis. However, I do not regret my service, in fact I would never change a thing even if I could.

Thanks for the reply Joey!!!! and have a great night!!!!

23 YEARS? And you only made it to three U.S. locations.... Wow!

Thanks for serving your country.

You get much REP or that great story. Carolina Crawfish is a great name and I love the way you got it.

I thought you were going to tell us a story about how you always woof at people then back down, you know, like the crawfish does when he is scared. :D

name

If i use my real name noone would know who we we talking about, as all have called me {STICK ]since the 6 grade in school and it is what i pefure to be called. and i will never hide, you can allways find me!!! ] :D :D :D :D

I have been known as Blackjack since the late 1970's. I believe my real name is synonymous with my nickname, however my name did change from day to day when I was out on the road - for a while it was Jack Sullivan and yes I was hiding from...er.. creditors. Those days are over. I have posted under both my real name and "Blackjack" since the inception of this forum. I look exactly like my picture. Don't ever hesitate to say hello if you see me at a pool hall or tournament. If you want to buy me a drink (I don't drink alcohol) make sure Voodoo Daddy gets the tab. :p

Why some people don't use their real names.

I think in the case of pool forums, it is more likely that people will be held responsible for their words and this is why most people don't post their real names.

I don't have a problem with anyone using a screen name and remaining anonymous. It is just that their credibility suffers a bit with me, especially when they call other people derogatory names and stir up s**t just to anger others. In the process of stirring up s**t, they paint their own self-portrait and don't want to be identified with that particular painting. I've said some rather unflattering things to others in my life and even on forums like this one and so I have had to accept responsibility for those indiscretions and try to keep those times to a minimum. :D :D

Each to his or her own........

Bugz is my nickname, but i'm a nobody. So I could care less, name is in my sig

Joey, I think I know where you're coming from. But some folks also like to preserve some privacy and/or anonymity. I'd rather rate somebody's credibility on what they say and how they say it.

A couple of people know who I am, but the last thing I'd want to be known as is some Internet know-it-all blowhard.

Tough to get rid of

Nah, JoeyA, I prefer to think of the Crawfish as that annoying little thing that , once it gets a hold on you, doesn't let go. Gotta chuckle when I think of the times I've explained that one after being down 10 or 15 games and coming back.

My real name is Toupee Jay. But you can call me Ray, or you can call me J, or you can just say Hey.

I think that when you use your real name and photo you are more thoughtful in your posts.
No question about it, Joe. I also like to see a guy's city, or at least the state that he's from. It often adds a little more info to the post. Several times I've PM'd a guy when I found out where he lives, or what room he frequents, just to ask him a question about a possible mutual acquaintance, or to pick his brain about a local historical question. I'm always surprised when I open up a guy's personal info tab, and there's not even a location listed!

I agree entirely! By the way, did you ever get to hook up with Bud Frichette?

Real name is Scott Lawler.

When I lived in GA, everyone would ask about Nor Cal Bud when I told them I was from north of San Francisco so I joked I should change my name to Bud Green from Cali.

Nice avatar, VIProfessor.

I don't think it matters though I would have liked to been a troll too rather than the auspicious blackdragon , just thought of black widow, black this, black that. Screen names are good. They keep the politically correct and the anal off the track and thats that. No-one is going to come where I am, anyway though it would be a treat of a trip if you did. If I ever make it to the top, people will know who I am anyway but yeah, there probably are too many flamethrowers and crazies in cyberspace out there anyway (who wants them in your personal space) unless you want azbilliards to be like a club that has to have five referees before you join, a screen name is fine. imo

Stick is right. I've only know him as Stick for years.
What's been going on? Are you coming to the Athens Viking Tourney end of June?
