Voodoo Daddy said:I use this name becuase if I use what I am normally called I will be banned, HAHAHAHA. In real life I cant use my real name cause I am automatically associated with a real bad person in the pool world...sigh.
"BIG STEVE" in Miami is not "BIG STEVE" the "WHALE". He is dead...been dead over a decade but if I say my name is "BIG STEVE" people always look for lighting or gunfire. Having outted myself I will go back to being called Voodoo...works for me and I lower the chance of being struck by something that will hurt
Steve Ferraro Jr~~~~just dont call me Francis

Seriously, I just prefer to know that clients, employees, nephews, can't google my real name and start looking through my posts. It's not that there's any great personal secrets, it's just that this is a hobby and I prefer to keep it private from a few people, not a lot.
Especially since my real name is spelled very uniquely. There's only one of me in the entire country, maybe the world. I'm one of those guys who can never say it must have been some other guy with the same name.

Shane, do you live on Leighton Barracks?
I used to be stationed in Weurzberg at Faulenberg Kaserne, but this was way back in the late 80's.
Flex said:I know a fellow who was stalked some time ago and beaten up, in a public place. His real name was splashed in different places online, which made it easy for someone to figure out who he was, get a picture of him, and mug him unexpectedly. Retaining a degree of anonymity is probably a good thing for most people; never know when some wacko or sicko or criminal will decide it's their turn to go after someone. Celebrities often have bodyguards, for good reasons....
To help make this a better Forum ! However as you see unfortunately the folks that like to act out !JoeyA said:The more I hang around forums like AZ, the more I realize the need for the screen names to have real names attached to them.
We all get a little excited from time to time and make statements that are sometimes painful or aggravating to others. By using a screen name with no real name related, we are able to hide behind that screen name, woof at people anonymously, even make false accusations and not be held accountable for our comments.
For some anonymous posters, the name calling, the threats, the woofing and the intimidation makes them feel a little taller, a little stronger and more than what they really are. But in reality it shows a weakness in our character as men and women. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a little controversy an enjoy the woofing as much as the next guy, I just like people to be held accountable for their words and actions.
Screen names are COOL and I don't think they should go away, ever. The screen names are fun and personal and identify certain things about us.
I was thinking that it would be pretty neat to have like a CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY FOR SCREEN NAMES, you know where your screen name was related to the name on your drivers license or birth certificate. It would be a badge of courage so to speak, and those who were "certified" would be given a certain level of respect that is not given to other forum members. By being certified, you are then held to a different set of standards, unlike anyonymous posters.
I am sure many would prefer to remain anonymous regardless and that is fine but for hard-core members who value their words and deeds a certification of their real identity would speak volumes.
Does anyone think there is any merit to this hair-brained idea?
Who knows, maybe the AZ system administration has a way to add a certification of identity to the forum for those who would want one.

Because I am a “real” professor retired from Youngstown State University, my university web site with all details including resume and family details were on the net for years. Listing on the Internet is like listing in a telephone book and there is no reason not to be publicly identified unless the person has something to hide. I like to see photos of people who post as I feel I get to know them better. Not many do so you have to live with the need for anonymity.
I think that JoeA has a great idea that it should be net wide. No real name – no credibility. This makes perfect sense to me and is one of the better ideas I have heard in a long while. I think that when you use your real name and photo you are more thoughtful in your posts. The research strongly supports the notion that people are more vicious when they are anonymous.
I did have a slight problem a few years ago with a person using my name and credentials to advertise off shore prescription drugs but it was easily solved. So with over 30 years on the net I have not had any real problems using my real identity.
