Sell My Hercek???

So I really like my Hercek, but there’s one problem: I rarely use it. Between not being able to carry my pool case onto an airplane, play league in some iffy places, and the fact that my main pool hall is, on Friday and Saturday nights, crowded with drunks and bangers, I’m just not comfortable taking something that valuable around with me. So I do most of my shooting with an early 1990s Schon with a Runde era shaft (newly wrapped an re-finished, thanks to Mike Webb). In fact, because I shoot so much more often with my Schon, I’m actually more comfortable playing with it than with my Hercek. So the Hercek spends most of its time safely in a case on a shelf, which seems like a waste.

Lately, I’ve been pondering a new plan: sell the Hercek, pocket some money and use the rest to hire another cue maker with a shorter waiting list to make a matched pair of cues for me. I envision having 2 butts and 3 shafts, all completely interchangeable. The first butt would be custom made to my specs, a mid-range collectible cue (level 4-5 on the BB scale), perhaps even a bit fancier than my Hercek. The second butt would be either a zero point or plain 4-point cue. The key would be to have the two butts have the same dimensions, weight, balance point, and wrap – ideally, I won’t be able to tell, or will barely be able to tell, the difference without looking.

The idea would be that I could keep two shafts in my case at all times and then pick whichever butt I want for the occasion. If it’s league night, then I go with the plain butt (that I could replace for under $500 if needed). If I’m meeting an AZBer and want to show off my fancy cue, then I go with the six-pointer.

Any thoughts on this scheme? Any recommendations for who to go with? (I’m leaning towards Mike Webb) Am I nuts to even consider selling a Hercek? If I’m not nuts for considering it, does anyone want to buy a Hercek? I put some pictures up on Yahoo: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/cappscory/album?.dir=/adb2&.src=ph. The pictures aren’t great, but they’re decent. I also posted scans of the original invoice, shipping label, and letter from Joel.

Here’s the quick specs: 2 shafts with Ivory ferrules, one 13 mm and one 12.75mm; leather wrap; Piloted SS joint; 58”, 19.4 oz; as goes without saying for a Hercek the points are dead-even and razor sharp (4 veneers). Ivory inlays, with a delrin butt cap. It’s definitely in 98% condition because, as I said, I don’t take it to many places so I don’t use it often. In fact, the tips are original – as the pics show, one tip has a fair amount of use on it and the other is barely played. (JoeyA from RSB and AZB has hit with it, in fact).

Thanks,
Cory

P.S. How accurate is the Blue Book? On page 343, it shows a level 4 Hercek that is comparable to mine in terms of the inlay work (but mine has a leather wrap and ivory ferrules) at $4000-$4300 for 100% condition and $3800 for 95% condition. That suggests a price around $4,000 to me – about right?

Hi, The hercek is beautiful!! Any chance for trade plus cash? I have a few schons ltd up for sales. I remember you can get a hercek on ebay about 1 year ago in the same caliber for around $2400. I sold my Hercek in 2003 for only $2000.00. Really nice cue...

EbAY RIGHT NOW
HAS A HOPPE FOR $2000 THAT WILL PROBABLY GO TO $2400+
HAS A LESSER CUE THAN YOURS AS FAR A WORK IN IT AT $3300
AND WILL PROBABLY HIT $3500+
I THINK CUEMASTER IS low

I'll play you for it next week at the Cue Bar.

I have had three Herceks in the last year:

1. One with less inlays and ivory joint - got rid of it for around $2500.

2. One with about the same amount of inlays and ivory joint - got rid of it for around $3000.

3. One with inlays, scrimshaw work and steel joint - got rid of it for around $3500.

I know what you mean about not playing with them, mine never saw action outside of my house.

I think a reasonable cash price for this cue is around $3000.

Ok, but you'll have to change your name to UGOTDA5OUTANDBREAKS (BTW, we had 13 last week and the owner is now giving $20 in table time to anyone who places).

You'll have to tell me on Sunday how you came by 3 in one year. It sounds like you might have let them go a little on the cheap side. I'll have to see what this one goes for on Ebay: http://tinyurl.com/mcd3v. It's comparable to mine, but with a bit more ivory but no scrimshaw. It's at $3000 (reserve not met) with 8 bids and 4 days to go.

Thanks for the feedback, all. Right now, I'd sell it for $3800, but no less since I'm not anxious to sell it. If I find that price is out of line, then I'll adjust.

Anyone see this Hercek listing? The photos do not match the description .. it looks to have broken buttcap and the joint ain't SS

The cue in the pictures isn't finished either. It looks like there may be masking tape covering the joint. I'm not sure why the butt cap would be broken but I'd definitely ask for specific pictures before bidding to make sure that he actually has the cue!

Looks like masking tape on both the joint and the butt.
The listing does mention that the pictures were from Joel and that they are the in progress pictures.
Must not have a camera.

It appears that the reserve has been met and it is still at $3000.
I have been watching this one since it was posted 2 weeks ago.
The lister pulled the auction on June 22 and relisted a couple of days later.

I have several Hercek cues right now. I have only sold two in the past. I regret selling them big time. I think that you would be getting rid of one of the most collectible cue makers work in this generation. In the end, you should keep it and spend the money to have more cues made. Five years from now you will regret not having the cue.

Two new pictures were added to this auction and it shows the cue is now completed.
The butt cap is installed, the SS joint is visible and the wrap is now installed as well.
Wish the pictures were larger to see more details.

But, I am glad you did sell one of them, Deno!! ;)

I almost made the mistake of selling it this year. But, instead it now has a new finish and wrap by Joel and looks brand new!

I think you may be a little on the high side. I sold this cue around a year ago for $3500. But that is only an opinion of a bitter person that sold his Hercek.
