This is just sad. SMH. Doesn't anyone work for what they need anymore.. It's like every time someone needs something for themselves they create a go fund me page or come on here asking for hand outs. It's not just mike, but it is rediculous. Well mike if you wanna earn your trip. Come work for me for 2 weeks at my shop Monday -Friday 9am to 5pm. I will pay your entry fee for all three events, hotel, and transportation. I'm not into just giving hand outs though. I believe in working for what you have. Pm me if your interested.

This sounds like a great deal. I'd jump on it Mike Wong! Then you won't feel so obligated.

Hi Phillyviper1, I am going to mention that you previously barked and harassed me to play on the Forum. But, you refused to come to NYC to play, and refused to play both times I was in Philly. You also did the same with Jennifer Baretta and Danny Harriman. I’m sorry, but judging by your character I am going to assume you are not sincere, but instead just trying to knock me. By the way I also have other responsibilities, I have an elderly parent that needs my attention, so I dislike having to leave New York for an extended period of time, without someone in my place.

Well mike you asked me for 10-8 in one pocket so yes I declined. Also I told you and everyone else, I don't travel for pool. I HAVE MONEY I DONT NEED TO GO POOL ROOM HOPING. I also told you when you were in philly both times I will play you 9 ball if we use a magic rack and you declined that also. As for Jen Barretta Lol please bro her and her husband can have all the even action they want with me and never once did they except, infact they set me multiple messages asking me for a spot. So don't talk about things you know nothing about. And Harriman he wanted to play even I told him I need a spot. But back to you I offered you a job to pay you entry fee and just like everyone here can see you have declined that also. So you parade yourself around looking for handouts and free rides. By the way why is it that you can get stake horses to put you in $600 sets as you mentions in this thread but them same stake horses won't pay your entry fee for a tournament? It's sad bro it really is that you have no self respect and beg for sponsors but yet bark that you have all these stake horses to put you in gambling. SHM

It is an expensive trip, one that I personally budget and save up for so that I can attend each year. It's not easy but it's how I personally support my hobbies. Work and save. YMMV

Corey and Celtic, there are a few people in NYC who will put up cash for me to play money games. However, they are not interested in sending me to major tournaments. I hope that’s not hard to comprehend.

PhillyViper1 or Vincent Cimarelli I find you to be dishonest and just flat out lie about a lot of things. I find it bad taste that you facetiously congratulate me when I’ve lost a match by saying “Good Shooting” on multiple occasions. I don’t need to attack your character because that is not my thing, but others before have spoken about you including Danny Harriman. However, I refused to expend any more energy responding to your nonsense.

To all critics, I am disappointed in the way that some of you have acted. I understand that pursing pool professionally is a very difficult endeavor. However, if something is difficult, does that mean you don’t try? Or give up before you give yourself a real chance? Should you settle for mediocrity because others have told you to? Or should you settle because many people have told you to? Many of the great feats in this world would have never been achieved if people gave up. Albert Einstein wasn’t able to speak until he was 4 years old and his teachers said he would “never amount to much.” Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper for “lacking imagination” and “having no original ideas.” Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, yet he became arguably the greatest basketball player ever. These people did not become great by agreeing with their critics.

I wanted to be a great player ever since I started playing pool over 12 years ago. Actually, I wanted to be a top player. But, because of the negative attitude of most people in the pool world, I kept this goal to myself, and did not share it with others. I was told many times that I would never become a good player. I used this negativity to fuel me and become one of the stronger players in NY. But you know what? My goal is still to become a top player, it is no longer a secret, and I am not going to be ashamed of it. Whether or not I receive sufficient sponsorship to attend the Derby City Classic, I am still going to work hard to improve myself and strive to breakthrough to the next level. I understand that it is extremely difficult and the rewards are sparse. However, this is my decision and not anyone else’s. I will be the only person to determine what I am capable and not capable of.

I want to quote Theodore Roosevelt: “The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best, knows in the end of the triumph of high achievement; and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither.”

If I fail, it’s okay. Because I tried my best, and that’s all I could do. To me it’s much better than thinking back and wondering whether or not I could have if only I had gave it my all. I still have a lot of passion for this game. I quit my job in August because I felt it was compromising my level of play. If I could afford to, I would not go on the internet and ask for help. However, the Derby is very expensive and I don’t have the funds to get there. I need the competition and I need to be around great players constantly. There are many players who get sponsored, why is there a fuss?

Sounds like you have a dream.

I define dream as something you want so bad that you are willing to go through numerous unpleasant situations to get it and you never quit.

These unpleasant situations could be mental like the mental anguish that you feel when come across obstacles along the way that at first seem impossible to overcome.

The unpleasant situations could be physical like those occuring during the long hours of training that it takes to develope the skill to obtain your dream.


OR MAYBE THE UNPLEASANT SITUATION MIGHT BE THAT YOU HAVE TO GO WORK FOR PHILLYVIPER FOR TWO WEEKS IN ORDER TO FINANCE YOUR DREAM.


The question is... How bad do you want it?
 
Good to hear RJ. I really wasn't trying to be a jerk I just don't quite understand why players don't go all out when looking for sponsors. They shouldn't just be looking for a handout but instead they should sell themselves and explain what a sponsor can get out of the deal.

I read his post, and it sounds like he is offering (to a sponsor) exactly what you say he is not.

If your "hobby" doesn't pay for itself, then perhaps you need a better job to support your "hobby"..

Nothing against the OP personally, but I could never ask people for money to do the things I want to do.. I just work harder until I achieve what I want.

Did you guys not read his post? He is not asking for a hand out. He is looking for a sponsor, and in return he is offering to work very hard for that sponsor (like I see he did with "Magic Chalk").

I agree, unless the player is going to give you a return on your investment, which wouldn't be sponsorship, but a stake.

Okay, I feel like a fool now. I forgot that what he is looking for, which is a Sponsor, and that would mean that the sponsor would not get any part of the cash prize that he might win. He would just be advertising the sponsors product (trying to help sell it for the Sponsor) in return for a all expenses paid trip to the DCC. If he wants to get so bad though, then why does he not just get a backer. If he is that good, then I imagine many backers out there might pay his way to the DCC. But I assume that maybe he does not want a backer. He wants a Sponsor instead.
 
It sucks for people trying to make it playing pool.
Outside of the top say 5 in the USA everyone else needs help .

So, do all of the pro players have backers these days? None of them (other then the top 5) can afford to pay for their trips, expenses, and entry fees? If that is true, then that is just really sad I think. I imagine there must be at least 100 American players out there that can play at a very high level, and compete in these events, but maybe they just can't afford to get to them without a backer (unless they have a good job, and time off when ever they want to play in all of the big events that they want to play in).

It just might be the Wong place at the Wong time to ask for a hand-out, what with Christmas coming on, and everything.
You might give him a call though, and see how much he needs. I tried, but got the Wong number.
Even if we did raise some cash for him who's to say he wouldn't do us Wong and take off with the money? He just may simply be the Wong man for the job.

I do not know, but I have a feeling that maybe only a few pro players in the US have sponsors (that pay for all of their expenses). I can only think of 3 that have sponsors, and the 3 were on the Mosconi Cup team this year. Not even Justin Bergman has a sponsor (at least that is what I heard a while back), and either uses his own money, or just has backers. It seems like these days, most of the pro players have backers (that I imagine take a pretty large % of the winnings, but I do not know), and not sponsors. It is very sad I think. I wish you good luck in getting to the DCC.

If I had the skill and dedication (which I think I really did have the skill to maybe become a champion back when I was a teenager, but just not the confidence / self esteem, or the dedication), then I would just keep playing in the biggest events that I could get to, and hopefully if I did good enough, then a sponsor would find me and sponsor me. Look at Skyler Woodward. He did not even need to look for a sponsor (at least, I imagine he did not need to). He worked hard, and worked his way up to the big tournaments, and eventually got well known nationally, and Meucci decided to sponsor him.
 
This thread is hilarious. Mike, it's really simple, you're not good enough to get sponsored, get a job, budget your money and save up to pay for your HOBBY.... That's what the rest of us do...... Stop asking for handouts ..... You should be embarrassed to mention Walt Disney , Michael Jordan and Albert Einstein in a thread where your asking for a hand out.
