Shaft concepts

I have been experimenting with different kinds of shaft s and shaft wood. I make a pretty good laminated shaft. The one in the pic shows a half and half- 2-sides are Purple Heart and 2 sides are maple laminates. All are glued together with opposing sides. I feel that this makes and excellent breaking shaft, perhaps one of the best that I have felt. It is not as stiff as one might think. With the right combinations (ferrule, tip, phenolic inserts) it become quite universal with different kinds of feel. While maybe not quite the most appealing its playability is unparallel.

I'm not a "High tech" shaft kind of guy myself. I prefer a good rock hard maple shaft with ivory ferrules for my player, but I agree that with 8 pieces you'd probably have better radial consistancy. Having the different woods spaced out around the shaft would IMHO be an improvement from an accuracy standpoint. Of course it'll be a bigger pain in the ass to build and will it really be an improvement that could not be achieved merely through a change in taper? Hmmm guess I'll leave that to the "High tech" guys.

Can you try this with other woods than just Purpleheart and Maple? I'd like to know how a Purpleheart and Ash combination in 8 piece splice would perform...

regardless of performance, an 8pc pie laminate would look SICK with that combination. Pretty cool work partner keep it up!
