What are my options for shaft taper and what are the differences between the different options.

seems funny that if u are not a high end cue collector or a custom cue maker your questions never get answered on here.

No need to insult everyone here Teko! Your question is very broad and sometimes it takes a while to get a response here. Many of the cuemakers I know could spend 2-3 hours talking about shaft tapers, etc. Then they wouldn't get their work done and customers would be griping:D

Here's a suggestion: There's an informed discusion on the pros and cons of various shaft tapers at the Shuler Cues website (yes you can google it). There are many variations in shaft tapers and joint sizes. Add to that butt, tip and ferrule combos...well, this is what helps make the cue circus so interesting.

You waited less than 2 hours on a HOLIDAY. I'm sure everyone's going to jump to answer you now.

*laughing* my thoughts exactly, and this was a topic I was interested in. Probably get no serious answers now.

Taper of a cue depends on the cue maker of your choice. You have to ask your cue maker what choice you have.

If you buy a production cue, they already have a set taper. So, play with different cues and see what you like and then you can find out what taper that cue has from there.

Are these classifications industry standard? And does anyone have an illustrated version of these tapers?

There is no industry standard for anything about cues. That's why all custom cues are different. We all try to build the best cue we can but most of us have a little different idea of what's good and what's not.

I wouldn't know what an illustrated version of a taper would be. I don't believe that a few thousands difference in tapers would show up in any graphic that have seen and I am certain that if it were possible it would be of no value. You have to feel a taper to know if you like it or not in my opinion.

Good cuemaking,

thanks, Bill. lots of good info there,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,jflan:D

I don't know why that would be considered good information. I read it years ago and again today and it still looks like mumbo-jumbo to me and I am supposed to know what it means. It is of no value to anyone unless the shaft diameters are expressed every inch from tip to joint.

Who ever heard of a "forgiving shaft". What does it forgive? If you aim wrong you miss. If you use incorrect spin - you miss possition and end up out of line.

Good cuemaking,
You mean when someone walks into your shaft and tells you he wants a " pro-taper" you don't have the taper etched in stone for everyone who says that? :D
How about the " low-deflecting" shaft taper???? You got a separate taper bar for that?
Heard of Taiwan-taper, Filipino taper and European taper yet? LOL

This is an easy one...MY TAPER IS THE BEST. I'm right & everybody else is wrong. NOW that said, every Q,maker ,large & small makes what they think is a GOOD SOLID playing Q. Basically that means their TAPER , FERRULE & TIP combination is what they think a pool Q should play like. I think a Q shold play solid, 1st of all. A Q shouldn't have strange sounds & vibrations coming from the hit. After that, the TAPER,FERRULE & TIP should give you good contact & a CONTROL of the Q ball. In otherwords if you want 6" of draw, you should not get 12". CONTROL of the Qball is utmost importantce in my opipnion. In my humble opinion, deflection is a modern MISNOMER for something that can make your game better WITH OUT LEARNING THE BASICS of pool. I asked Willie Moscon about "DEFLECTION" & he said " I DON"T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT. I JUST SEE THE SHOT, KNOW WHERE I HAVE TO HIT THE BALL & DO IT". That pretty much says it all...JER
