Shane Van Boening: What about him....

Everyone knows that Shane is America's best pool player.

Yesterday, he beat Europe's best player, Darren Appleton 25-17. Today they play again on TAR.

This year Shane has had some EPIC matches against WORLD CHAMPION Johnny Archer and WON.

Has Shane learned how to tough it out against the world's best on a regular basis, regardless of whether he is on the one-loss side or not?

Is it possible in this day and time for someone like Shane to truly dominate like Earl did in the past or like Buddy or Sigel did? Some people claim that time has passed and that there are too many great players for there to be a dominate player ever again. They say that one player is on top today and another tomorrow.

Just wondering if we are witnessing another dynasty in the making?

I'm sure someone should mention that in the several encounters that Shane and Orcullo had in 2012, it was Dennis who came out ahead more often than not. Yeah, Dennis is one TOP PLAYER.

Shane definatly has the tools to be on of the best ever but I saw something in him during his match with Dennis that really worries me...... the giveup stroke..... Fighting til the bitter end is required to have your name next to Buddy Hall & Efren Reyes.

Fighting til the bitter end. I like that. :D

But I like this better. NEVER, EVER quit. Fight to the very end. It might not be so bitter after all.

I think the days of a dominant player has passed. The rolls play to big a part in rotation games. Shane is great and has one of the best images in the pool world today but dominant he is not

Archer did beat Shane on TAR and Busty beat Archer, hopefully we see Busty face someone again.

Shane has already done that!

Well none of these guys dominated the Pool world, they dominated the American Pool world and Shane has done the same thing.

And on top of everything else Shane plays with an off-the-shelf Cuetec given to him by a fan.

Buddy didn't travel outside the USA. Sigel quit. Earl on the other hand with three or four world Championships did dominate pool globally.

Thing is that NOW there are so many world beaters that no one can dominate for more than a short time. Often you will see a player win a big tournament and then follow it up with another one or two and then they have a dry spell.

Especially when you factor in the short sets in a lot of big events. Statistically lower level players are going to win more sets when the races are short. So when the actual speed difference is only a ball or two it's extremely tough to fly halfway around the world and play races to seven against runout players.

If we ever see another player really dominate like the year Nick Varner won like 8 out of 9 events then that player will be truly special.

Both Shane and Darren made good points though when they said it's also about comfort. Shane does well in the USA where he is familiar with the food and culture. Darren says he has to travel everywhere anyway so it's all foreign to him and thereby easier to acclimate.

I certainly consider SVB to be "among" the best players in the world. It would not surprise me if he became dominant and the player to beat internationally in the future, however he is not there yet.

Having been to the Philippines twice my eyes were opened. There is an A player in every little poolroom. In "One Side" in Manila there are probably 100 A players. The weekly tournaments at Star Billiards in Quezon City has quite a few players who could easily win on the pro tour here in the USA.

Have you seen the video on youtube of a young player named Michael Feliciano who gives Efren the 9 in Ten Ball for the cash and wins ? Barely, but he wins !
