Shane Van Boening's uncanny ability to thin balls

Stick aiming or shaft method as its called, works very well and more players than you think use it. Try this shot to see a little how it works. Put a ball on the spot, take cue ball and put it in the kitchen 1 diamond from the side rail and 2 diamonds up from the end rail. Shoot the object ball center of the shaft to the edge of the ball, if your on the left side of the table your shooting at the left side of the object ball. Try it and let me know if it works for you.

This is a favorite subject of mine, and I'm surprised people don't practice these exact shots more often. Making a shot requires the combination of KNOWING exactly where to shoot and actually ACCOMPLISHING the task of shooting there. Most of us, I think, end up CONFUSING which of the two is at the root of the problem when we miss. If that confusion remains, it's difficult to improve.

Practicing these shots allows you to get to know how accurately you can place the CB. If you CAN'T place the CB very accurately, then THAT is what you should be practicing more. If you CAN place the CB with deadly accuracy, but still miss shots, then your problem is that you don't know where to aim.

I noticed the same thing during the match last night. In fact, I mentioned SVB's beautiful thin hit safeties several times and feel that because of it, it gave him a noticeable edge in safety play, versus Mika's safeties. A few times, Mika played thin hit safeties and had more movement from the OB than SVB's safeties. A couple of times, the OB moved enough to cause the safety to leak out, giving SVB a look.

Eric, you're a damn slick commentator.. as well as a good egg.

I really thought Mika would have figured out a wired break with the Magic Rack and run more racks. Mika looks like he's trying to hit them too hard.

I really wish this event had been run over the weekend. I looked into going but it would have meant taking pretty much the whole week off. The airfare was only $300! It would have been a great weekender.

In the few moments I was able to catch some of the match, Eric. was the male commentator. And I agree, Jay. Eric. does a very good job. He's got a good voice for the mic., and he's knowledgeable about the game, the players and the local scene.

I think there are four things that make for good commentary:

1. Comfortability on the microphone
2. Knowledge of the game
3. Knowledge of the players
4. Beer (in case any of the other three are lacking)
