Can't thank the guys at propoolvideo.com enough for the work that they do to give these great matches. Shane vs. Dennis up now; if you have not seen Shane play yet, this will give you an idea of what all the hype is about.

I've been checking the site for this video a lot and now it is here :) So far its pretty good.

I was fortunate to be sitting about 3' from Shane during this match. Since Efren was not present in Vegas or Jacksonville, Shane became my new player to watch. However, if not for a few bad break-shots by Dennis the outcome might have been a little different as both players were running out very well, and I think that Dennis makes fewer mental and positional mistakes than Shane or pretty much any of the pros IMHO.

Congrats to ProPoolVideo for doing such a good job of showing this match. Couldn't help but think they did a better job with one camera than ESPN does with four! Goes to show you what a little Pool knowledge will do for you. And they even spelled Orcullo correctly. And of course, it was a full length match with no games left out. Another of my pet peeves with ESPAIN.

The scratches on the break are what doomed Dennis here. One more thought. I don't think you need alternate breaks in Ten Ball. I'd like to see Ten Ball go back to winner breaks. It isn't easy to string racks of Ten Ball, and I for one would like to see someone do it, if they can. Thanks for posting this. And whoever you are at ProPoolVideo, GOOD JOB!

I thought Shane VB played with a OB-1. The ferrule on the shaft he is using in that video looks like a regular white ferrule to me. Is he using a OB-1 that has been modified? Any details would be appreciated. I have an OB-1 and have been considering switching to a regular ferrule.

Talk to Varney. He does a great replacement for the ob-1.

Tap, tap, tap. I totally agree w/Jay regarding winner break in 10 ball. I hope "they" make it happen...soon.

Thanks for your coments Jay.

I totally agree that 10-Ball should be winner breaks. To me, the most exciting aspect of rotation games is that the top players are capable of running racks. And when you take that away, it becomes a bit boring .

I think the Florida Pro Tour has the right formula: 10 on the break gets spotted, break from the box, and winner breaks. With this format, the best players are able to string racks that electrify the railbirds. At last week's tour stop, during the first day of action, Lee Van Corteza faced a good local player named Raul. To start the set, Raul broke and made nothing. The next time he stepped to the table, the score was 5-0. Lee was just incredible. Too bad I didn't tape that match!

But I did tape this one:

Dennis Hatch runs 4 and out to beat Marlon Manalo.

Now that's 10-Ball!

Score oddity

The score of this match was reported here on AZB and elsewhere as 11-9. But I got 11-8. At first I thought I had made a mistake and went through the edited video again. But I couldn't find any problem, the breaks alternate correctly throughout the match: Dennis breaks on even score count, Shane breaks on odd.

The weird thing is, I remember (???) being there and seeing the final score cards say 11-9.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Agreed. But I did string 3 together the other day and nearly pooed my pants. Ten ball is so totally the new nine ball.

Eric.

You're the man Jorge! Any relation to Frank Torres, the great Three Cushion player?

P.S. I like the Ten on the break winning as well. Also not easy to do. Oh well, as Bob Jewett would say, that's the Jay Helfert rules, and WTF does he know.

Speaking of Orcullo, is this whole story about how the backers in PI don't want to back Efren against Orcullo true at all? Perhaps I'm just a fool who would easily be parted with his money, but I just don't see this guy playing better than Efren. That is not a knock on Orcullo at all because he's a great player. That's just how great of a player Efren really is. I kind of view this like the media always hyping up every new basketball player with obvious talent as "the next Michael Jordan". Maybe I just haven't seen enough of Orcullo play or maybe I've seen too much of Efren play. I don't know. Either way, I'm not quite ready to subscribe to the idea that no one in PI wants to stake Efren against Orcullo. If that's the case, I'm thinking there's more to the story than just "Efren can't win".

Nope. Neither to Miguel Torres, another great 3-C player and Artistic Billiards champion. But hey, I had a milestone of sorts at last week's tour stop. I beat Dan Lavoie, a pretty darn good Florida player, 7-5. I even 3-fouled him!

During that match, Dan, who owns the beautiful Hammerheads Billiard Lounge in Palm Harbor FL, played this incredible shot on me that I had never seen. He had to jump a ball, but the bridging was awkward. So he takes off his right shoe and makes a little groove in his sock between his big toe. He then layed his leg on the table and used his foot to bridge the jump shot, which HE MADE, only to lose the cue ball off table.

One thing Jay, I said the 10 on the break gets spotted, it doesn't win. But the breaking player keeps shooting. In the Florida Tour, if the spotted 10 interferes with your next shot immediately after the break, you can choose to spot if after you take your first shot.

I feel this makes for a higher skill game. Running racks in this format really means something. Once again, I have to commend Florida Pro Tour Tournament Director John DiToro for putting together this great tour with a cutting-edge format. Oh, and the players seem to love it.

Now, I'd like to see that shot on video. Where's that camera when you need it? Reminds me of Rich Geiler out of Tacoma. He would shoot three rail kick shots with his foot for money. And win!

All kudos to John Ditoro. He's my main man in Florida. One of the Miami Vice boys long ago, with Tommy Brown. What a road team they were.
