Shane's Schon

I have seen several questions regarding the cue Shane used for the Action Challenge and the U.S. Open. Here is some first hand info:

Old Schon R series (as stated in another thread looks like an R-2) he got from his mom (she posted the story here recently) with a Joss East shaft. I hit some balls with it before he left for the Open and did not like it at all.

He has the shaft taper pulled waaaayyyyy back and the diameter at the tip is probably around 12.5 or a little less. It is definetly set up for that long smooth stroke he uses. Its funny but you watch him play and think "Man I bet that cue hits great, firm but flexible, solid but with a good action" because of how he moves his cueball. Then I hit with it and to me it hits terrible :D :D Probably because I dont play good enough. :D

I have hit with and owned many cues from high to low end and this one really hits in the bottom 20% for me. It's just funny how things are not like you think they are. The thing is I LOVE old Schon's too....I think it is the blending of the Joss shaft...it hits like maybe the pilot does not contact all the way around....almost a little of a hollow feeling to the hit. Weird.

Seriously, the hit is very underwhelming and just goes to show that it ain't the arrow it's the Indian. Shane could scare the world with a broomstick.

Below are some pictures I took in the basment of Lucky's in Sioux Falls about a week before the first Action Challenge.

what happened to the joss with the S H A N E points?

Great post!!!

Pool players have an intense, though probably irrational, interest in the cues of top players. Lots of AZ people wanted to know what cue Shane was using. Now you have not only given them the straight scoop, but even given your impression of the hit of the cue! I wouldn't be surprised if Shane is using the shaft of the Joss cue he has played with since he was a kid. So thanks for your post and rep points to you.

He still has it. He won the World 10 Ball with it. I guess like most of us he just like a change now and then. :D

I have hit with both and there really isn't too much difference IMO. Same shaft he just switches butts. The Schon feels a little thicker to me.

shaft is the same shaft from the joss! he swtched butts after the last 10 ball tourny! and yes thats the closet! :D

That first picture really shows the suuuppppeeerrrr long pro taper. I'm surprised/amazed he is so dang consistent with that toothpick.

Ronnie alcano plays with a similiar style taper, but with a much smaller ferrule/tip size. If I remember correctly 11-11.5mm. From my sources.

Now I personally enjoy more traditional pro-taper, but understand the philosophy behind the longer thinner tapers used by some pros.

I too have hit with Shane's cue before. Did I like the hit? Not really. I don't personally care for any steel jointed cue period made by any maker. I personally like a wood to wood hit.

Just goes to show one thing. There is a cue stick made to fit each and every person out there, and their different playing strengths and weaknesses.

Anybody wanna make me a "tribute" cue like his Joss? ....

My name is Shane also so it's not really stealing :D.. plus I dont feel like fighting with the unicorns and sea otters....and my pot of gold might not be quite big enough to talk him into unloading his
