Shannon Daulton for the 1 Pocket AND Banks H.O.F.

Polls rot...too many young folks rootin' one way and thats suppose to be fair?

Jay is a good choice, lets ask Freddy, Artie and Billy. Wait, that might be loaded. Lets ask the guys that play on Shannon's tour...that would be unbiased, LMFAO!!!

Bottom line is simple...your guy WILL be in both, my guy DESERVES to be in only one, thats as fair as I can be.

VOO~~~loved this banter, the thread and the subject. Im retired from it.

Agreed.......

Not saying anything about how "deserving" some of the members or potential members are but quite a few of them wouldn't have liked playing SD one pocket or banks. The guy practically hibernates and plays pool seriously maybe 3 or 4 times a year and still places in the top 10 or better at DCC nearly every year in banks and 1P.

I am a bit biased because Shannon is a good friend but I truly believe he is one of those rare talents that comes along once in a blue moon.
He plays all games at the highest level and has the titles to prove it. If he had taken up 14.1 I have no doubt he would be one of the top guys in that as well.

I know it's early, but there's a reason why I'm posting this now.

At Steve Booth's excellent site OnePocket.org, besides being a historical reference point for banks and one pocket, he also has a Hall of Fame for the legends of 1 pocket and bank pool.

Every October, he opens up the forums there for nominations as to who should be on the ballot for enshrinement. That event takes place at the Derby City Classic.

The reason I'm posting this now is that ONLY VERIFIED MEMBERS are eligible to nominate and then vote for the inductess they deem worthy.
Here's a link explaining this in detail......
http://www.onepocket.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3222

I've lobbied for Shannon Daulton for several years now and what held him back before was Steve wanted at least 20 years in pooldom before being placed on the ballot.

My thinking has been that Shannon, who was born in 1972 and started playing pool at age 5, has more than 20+ years "in service" at pool. His father Gerald staked him in money matches for $300.00 a game by the time he was 11. (Turning 38 on April 5, this means Shannons now has 27 years of gambling and tournament seasoning to his credentials.)

At 19, he won the 1992 Legends of One Pocket, beating the likes of Steve Mizerak, Gary Spaeth and Bugs Rucker on his way to the championship.

Besides winning several other major championships in both 1 pocket and banks, Shannon also has 2 Derby City Classic 9 Ball Championships as well as being the 2001 Derby City Classic All-Around Champion.

And while still being one of America's best all-around and most elite players, Shannon (and Marge) also started and run their own tour....http://www.greatsouthernbilliardtour.com/. Very few players have the willingness to work that hard to keep a successful tour running. Shannon is setting a great example to his fellow pros that it CAN be done.

If, like me, you feel that Shannon Daulton has EARNED a rightful place along side the other great pool champions and should be enshrined into the One Pocket and Banks H.O.F.'s (two seperate catagories), then please take a moment to go to http://www.onepocket.org/forum/index.php and sign up as a new member. Then, you'll be certain to be eligible to nominate whoever you feel is worthy into the respective H.O.F.s and vote once the ballot is completed.

Shannon has many other fans here and I want to make certain that he's not over looked any more.

One more thing....Steve Booth has really created a wonderful site. His labor of love has resulted in a forum that has the likes of Grady Mathews, Bill Incardona, SanJose Dick McMorran, Freddy the Beard, etc. The collective wisdom of the seasoned veterans who regularly post there is amazing. The stories and humor is second to none. Steve Booth is to be thanked for all the work he's put into his site. Guys like him and Mike Howerton do so much work behind the scenes to provide us fans really super sites. I'm grateful and very appreciative to both Steve and Mike.

Bottom line, if you're a fan of Shannon Daulton, take a minute to become a member over at 1Pocket.org and then come time to to vote, let's landslide him into the Hall of Fame(s)!

I forsure would love to see Shannon get into the HOF's there is no doubt in my mind he is 100% rightfully due to be in both HOF's. I would like to see some of the older guys get into the HOF's while they are alive, it means alot to a old person who cant do much but think of the past to be recognized. If I was Shannon I would not want to be on the ballot so the old guys get their night in the spot light, thats just a compassionate move. Shannon is one of my best friends I love him like family and mean no disrespect with this post to him at all, he deserves to be in any HOF and be credited with what he has accomplished in pool and will accomplish, He isnt close to being near the end of his career-he is still wet behind his ears compaired to some of the guys.

Thats just my view on it, I think HOF inductions for deceased people are great, but I think giving a 75-85 year old player an induction(kinda like Bugs) is better that it going to a younger player. In general terms.

Respectfully,

Eric

I would love to see a comparison of One Pocket Tournament Victories by each of the player's mentioned in this thread.

Shannon, while relatively young, shouldn't be held back from the One Pocket HOF because of his age. His One Pocket Tournament wins has to be at the top of any list.

Eric,
Then the H.O.F. is not based on skill level or achievements, it's based on "who's the oldest" or "most likely not to be here much longer" player available. Problem with that is none of know who lives long (Jimmy Caras 91) or who dies young (Mike Carella 28).

I follow what some of you guys are saying, and by the way, I never intended for this thread to be anything other than positive, but passing over an established great player for a lesser accomplished player seems unfair to the best player. It's like giving a handicap to the oldest guy left.

Let me try and say it this way.....If we were each picking a team of 1 pocketeers (credit to the Beard for that term) or Banks, then WHO would you want shooting for you on your team? Of everybody not yet inducted into 1P or Banks the H.O.F., who would you pick?

If I understand some of the thinking in this thread, if we have a 40 year old with say 10 titles and an 80 year old with say 5 titles, some would pick the 80 year old player to make him feel good. That's wonderful, except the guy with the 10 titles feels just as bad now as the guy with only 5 titles feels good. Seems unfair all kind of ways.

Personally, I feel that Daulton, Ervolino, Hopkins and Dick McMorran should all be in the H.O.F. Sadly, Johhny's been dead for over 5 years now and I really hope he's a shoe-in for this year's "Deceased" catagory. If not, it's a near travesty. I liked him as much as almost anybody, but I do give the nod to our man Lenny, who has done things to preserve John's memory other than just posting about him.

Thanks for the kind words. As the admin for the One Pocket Hall of Fame, I cannot show too much favoritism, but just looking at it objectively, there are three basic criteria for our HOF -- not separate categories, but rather more like cumulative criteria:
  1. Tournament record
  2. Action vs peers
  3. Contribution to the game via promotion & education, i.e. "giving back"

Looking at Shannon objectively any of these three ways, he sure comes across as a tip-top candidate. Is he young? Yes, but he started young. We use the 20 years as a player of significance guideline, and he won a major One Pocket tournament in 1992, but he was already a "player of significance" somewhat before that. I've told him he will be eligible in 2011. Remember, our voting takes place at the end of the calendar year, with our dinner taking place after the roll-over into the next year.

This coming 2011 year happens to be the 50th anniversary of the first Johnston City tournament, and plans are already underway for next year's HOF banquet at Derby City to be a full-fledged Johnston City reunion/celebration. We will be trying to get as many old-timers that attended/competed at Johnston City to come out of the woodwork and come on down to DCC for a great time, reminiscing with old friends and foes they may not have seen for years. If you are a Johnston City fan, put this date on your calendar -- Tuesday, January 25th, 2011.

Last, but not least, Sherm Adamson has been been kind enough to donate a special cue -- I believe every year, but one -- which we have raffled to help cover the costs of putting the dinner together (the catering/bar tab alone was about 8 grand this year). That kind of thing is a huge help in helping the event nearly break even. It also helped that right after our first HOF event in 2005, I happened to win a football pool for $4500, which I took as a sign, and I set that money aside in a One Pocket HOF fund.

This year we received a real nice cue donated by Buddy Hall Derby Cues a little too late to include in a raffle at the dinner, that will be coming up as an online raffle at some point. I have been recruiting some other donations to add to the raffle, so that there will be a range of prizes besides the one big prize of the cue. So far we have:

tr_12x.jpg

Buddy Hall Derby Cue #12
Freddy the Beard's Banks DVD 2 vol. set
Diana Hoppe Road Scholars DVD
Accustats DVD, your pick

Plus I will add some kind of signed memorabilia from prior One Pocket HOF events.

If any of you all would like to contribute something to this upcoming raffle, let me know.

Thanks again

Hell yeah, I'm voting for Shannon! A good friend of mine told me stories about seeing Shannon on the road with his Dad playing for the cash when he was 12. Shannon is a great one pocket player who has proven himself over and over again by beating the best - including Efren. Plus, in person, he's a hell of a nice guy, not stuck up, and willing to talk to any body. On top of all that, he's a tremendous commentator and his analysis is worth its weight in gold.

Steve,
That is just a great post Sir! Thank you!!

I just have a soft spot for seniors it stems from all the harm I caused older people when I was a telemarleter 17 years ago, I cant undo the damage to my victims. But moving fowards I do everything I can for seniors. Its a way of washing the guilt I have to live with. I will live with that forever. I was talking to a guy I hadnt spoke to in 5 years the other day, we worked in the same boiler room, and he has the same feelings I do. It actually gets worse over time.
