Shark In The Pool - Shane Van Boening

You'll be in for a pleasant surprise doc. I'm sure there will be a lot of comers from Manila
trying to get some piece of action from Shane. Johnny Archer was on top of the world back
in the mid/late 90s, but it didn't deter the top notch/shortstop players there from
challenging him for some dough. You could also ask Jay that I not BSing you. I'm sure
Shane will win more than he will lose, but to say that no one wants a part of Shane is not
true...

Right on Gobi. They'll line up to take him on over there. He will get all the action he wants and then some. I saw at least one 17 year old kid (Mike Katyama?) that could play him even and make him work hard to win.

There are probably two dozen players in Manila that would play Shane even. And he'll have to beat them all. haha

Gosh guys, I've never seen this kid play. But, you guys talk about this kid like he's unbeatable and sent from God himself to rule the pool world. I can't wait to see him in action (although if I am impressed, which I'm sure I will be, I will try not to come across like some starcrossed love obsessed fan). Every time I click onto this forum, someone is obsessing over this kid.

Shane is a very good player, who has rapidly emerged as the best hope for the future of American Pool. He also happens to be a good young man, who is unfailingly polite and yet unafraid to gamble. These are characteristics that endear him to many of us.

He is not so stuck on himself, that he won't listen to the advice and counsel of his elders. Smart kid I'd say.

Nice to hear

Good, sound info. I just get amused when people get "stuck" on something (cuemakers) or player and obsess. I want someone to be "time" proven before I start talking about him like I'm trying to take him to dinner. Remember "Little Tony", Coltrain? I also thought they would rule the world. Mike was my running partner on more than one occasion and it makes me sick to see his condition.

Bandido will know more info about Mike "Cho-ke" Takayama. There are also some more teenage sensation in the names of Renemar "Revo" David (also under Bandido's stable), Raymond Faraon, and Johann Choa.

I haven't seen Shane play but from all that i've read here about him and his performance, I'm a fan. It's something to win a tournament but to win and play in the finals of 4 consecutive tournament is truly amazing. Consistency is a special trait and very admirable. I congratulate him and the USA Pool Community for his accomplishments.

SVB is the talk of the inside circle here in the Philippines right now and Shane is very much admired for his accomplishments (more of his consistency). The Filipino players are anxiously awaiting his arrival here in Manila as they do with all other great players. For them, he's the standard now when it comes to American players capability. Match results against him can tell them what their chances are of winning in US tournaments. His statements are understandable, he's revved-up now and proves his worth so we applaud him and look forward to tangling up with him.

Congratulations Shane!

I don't know how Revo, #1 Junior player, fares against the rest of the 18 and below group right now as he's been out of circulation since classes started. He still practices for 4-6 hours daily but just can't stay up late anymore. It's Saturday 2 a.m. here and we just got done shooting previews and ads for the upcoming events here. We just parted ways as I was already dozing off and he headed off, with the other players, to Side Pocket for some action. I guess we'll find out later if he had any and how he performed. The rest of the group is still at it day in and day out.

Regarding Efren. It's like deja vu, I've currently been watching an Efren of 20 years ago. Strong if not stronger than how he was in the 80s!

Regarding whether SVB is "cocky" or not, here's my 2 cents...

He has had to go thru life with a pretty substantial handicap in not being able to hear like the rest of us. His speech has also been affected by his lack of hearing. He has probably felt at some time in his life that people looked or acted differently towards him because of his handicap. But, look at what he was able to accomplish. He is one of the best upcoming players with a "sky is the limit career" ahead of him. Imagine what this has done for his self confidence! No interiority complex there, and I am so happy for him. He is proud of his accomplishments and where he now resides in the pool pecking order, and rightly so. I will always be cheering for him and I wish him all the best.

I think he's absolutely right about that. Efren worshippers aside, does anyone know any player that is looking forward to playing Shane? I don't fault the kid for saying what he can do. He's playing as well as anyone in the world right now. He's like so many others who stood apart from their peers in their primes. No one wanted to play them.

Doc
I wouldnt say that NO ONE wants to play shane(not taking anything away from him, hes on fire right now) but i seen the video where Dennis Orcollo beat him pretty good in the finals of the enjoypool.com in vegas. Dennis is playing STRONG STRONG STRONG at the momment! I just watched him win the bill staton memorial in va beach and he went throught a tough feild(nevel, owen, park, moora, moore, bollman, abernathy, futrell, kiamco) like nothing. Dude is playing lights-out! Hes got to be the best with a jump cue from the phillipines ive ever seen! And hes a super nice guy to boot. Hes also starting to become a good straight pool player, i watched him run 10 racks on a diamond just messing around before the tournm. began! Good luck to shane, he seems to be a very nice guy and i really enjoy watching him play and i hope he does well in the future. Thanks

Thanks for the info.
What are they betting there (converted to US dollars), and do you have any idea what speed the good players are? Are any of them good enough to play on the Asian Tour or in the WPC? Do they normally play Races, like in the Philipines and is there any handicapping of matches, like with one player winning on the eight and nine ball.

I'd really love to see an SVB vs Efren match while SVB is still playing strong. That really sounds like an awesome matchup right now.

Just watched Efren play last night against Roberto Gomez and I'd say that he was not in his best form compared to his last few outings. Even then, He beat Gomez, with the wild8, 21-10 in 10-Ball. IMO, Efren is still way above the rest when it comes to controlling a match. Other players may break better, pocket better or jump better than him but when the dust settles down, Efren still prevails. With or without his pocketing and breaking working full-out.

Continuation on report above on Revo. He didn't get a match that night???! even though he hasn't matched up for a while (been going to school). But he got to match-up a couple of days later since we arrived early for the RPN9 Sargo video shoot. Played even against Buddy Kalaquian a race to 9 10-ball. Buddy won the coin toss but broke dry. Next chance that Buddy gets to shoot, he finds himself stuck 4-0 and eventually a final score of 9-3. Absence does make the heart grow fonder!:)

You have learned a valuable lesson about gambling. It can bring out the worst in people. Find the biggest, toughest guy you know to accompany you the next time you get into a game for any real money. If you win anything, give him something like 10-15% for going with you.

I'm sorry you had this bad experience. Don't feel alone. You aren't the only one who has had to give up their money. I bet if you had stood up to this guy, he would have backed down. Was he alone? Or did he have friends with him. It's also not a bad idea to learn something about self defense. Once you stand up for yourself the first time, people tend to leave you alone.

Unfortunately, you will probably get tested again. Once when I was in Thailand, a cab driver and his friend tried to rob me after dropping me off at a hotel. They helped me carry my bags up to my room, and then asked for ten times the agreed upon fare. The friend was a tall guy. I got mad and told them I would pay them. I reached into my backpack and took out a buck knife. Their eyes got big and wide.

I opened it up and started cleaning under my fingernails with it. Then I proceeded to remind them of our original deal (50 Baht). They quickly agreed to accept the 50 Baht and left. I don't know what I would have done, but I did know I wasn't going to give them the 500 Baht that they were asking for.

I'm not advocating violence to you. Just saying that sometimes in life you get tested. And you must figure out a way to deal with it. I'm not so big either, only 5'7".
