Shark In The Pool - Shane Van Boening

Have any of Earl's opponents ever shown up wearing ear protectors?:D :D :D
I would imagine some showed up with a good set of protective glasses to avoid getting chips of wood in their eye :D:D:D

In what tournaments are earplugs and ipods banned? I have never been to one where either was mentioned or was a problem. BJ Ussery is famous for playing with his ipod.

John,
The only two I know about for sure are these, but am positive there are more.
U.S. Amateur Championship -Atlanta, GA 2006
BCA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP PROFESSIONAL MEN'S TOURNAMENT, Steve Tipton Tournament Director, Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas 2007

These are two that I know about for sure.

I think the men's professional tournaments do not allow these items.

Local tournaments do not prohibit the use of some of these devices as far as I know.

Shane will be the man to beat in a couple more years, I dont think he will get distracted by poker etc., I hope not.

about me for a minute, when I was in my 20's playing pool I could be distracted easily, either by some outside thing or my own mind there was awalys something taking me "out of the shot", i took 12 years off serious pool and am comming back, the best thing thats happened is for a reason I cant explane the distractions are gone, I can block out anything in the pool room and my own mind isnt making any noise or thoughts of "what if". I just shut everything off like Shane says he does and he is Right it helps alot, infact that was one thing that held me back from being a better player then, i would dog balls often, and now its gone i donr miss key shots often, i still miss but not due to distractions, i just miss-its like meditation in a way, no noise in my brain or the pool room is great and to see a champion say that, is cool too, I really like Shane the more I hear about him the more I like him.

Imagine the distraction when this kid gets off the plane in Manila...I think that happens in November. As far as being the man to beat in a "couple years", I think you have missed that one by a couple years...lol

Shane said, "The top pool players in the world...they're pretty much afraid of me right now. I'm playing real great right now. I competed in the last three tournaments and got into the finals. They know that I'm going to be one of the best pool players in the world right now."
I think he's absolutely right about that. Efren worshippers aside, does anyone know any player that is looking forward to playing Shane? I don't fault the kid for saying what he can do. He's playing as well as anyone in the world right now. He's like so many others who stood apart from their peers in their primes. No one wanted to play them.

Hmmm

I didn't know that ear plugs and Ipods were banned. Ipods I can see but don't really agree with all the way. But I don't think anyone should be allowed to ban earplugs.

I think that a very good case could be made that playing in a tournament is a player's job and that banning earplugs deprives him of the right to perform his job without distractions.

If Shane is allowed to willfully impair his hearing to avoid distraction then another player should be allowed to do the same. (yes I know Shane is not deaf by choice, but turning off a hearing aid is a choice.)

I think if players really wanted to press the case that there wouldn't be much that tournaments could do but allow earplugs. IPODS?? Doubt that players could get those through.

This is silly. As a hearing-impaired player myself, Shane and I could just take out our hearing aids and just play. However I do play with my hearing aid on since I like to hear the balls and since I cannot hear words anyway, I am not distracted by people's conversations unless they are overly loud. Also I do agree that hearing people should be allowed to wear ear plugs if they want or ipods for that matter if they are discreet.

I called Shane last night after I saw the interview. When he answered the first thing I said to him was " So, I guess the top players in the world are pretty much afaid of you, huh ?" :D

He just laughed and said "I'm playing good right now." We laughed about it for a minute and he asked what I was up to. I told him the truth: "I just got done writing an article about you and that interview!" He laughed some more and we shot the breeze for awhile. I wonder if Efren is sleeping Ok? :D

One thing is for sure. The kid has no fear.

I've known Shane for many years. The young man has always been focused about being the best player in the world. I am happy to see him being so successful right now.

The toughest part of any sport is staying top dog when so many other dogs would just a soon bite your ass hard and spit you out. I think the difference I see is Shane puts a loss behind him and strives to excel that much more.

Confident or Cocky is more a level of respect. I don't think his comments were cocky, as they were presented so-matter-of-factly. However. I don't believe Michael Jordan with all his confidence would say that his opponents feared him. I think that the Tiger phenonmenom has somewhat queited down and maybe he isn't as feared as once was. Many times I've heard Tiger say something about being the best golfer in the world but no comments about his competetion other than he played well or I could have played better.

Maybe the choice of words in the interview were not the best but it is becoming apparent that the Kid is willing to back up his words and is totally capable of doing it. I know Shane is confident in his game right now and I don't foresee anything changing that in the short term. I am sure as he is approached on more interviews he will focus on his level of play in his comments and not his evaluation of the skill or mental game of his opponents that he will be facing for many years.

Just my 2 cents....

Good post.

SVB's confidence right now is similar to Efren's when he enters a tournament with an easy field. He knows he's won already even from the start.

What easy field? It sure wasn't the last three tournaments where he reached the Finals.

no i didnt mean the last 3 tournaments. i was pertaining to Mark Wilson's comment on Efren upon asking him how he thinks Efren will do in some tournament. Efren replys that he's won already, apparently because he thought the tournament had an easy field. Mark Wilson further explains that Efren stated it like as a mater of fact and not bragging. Same way I think with SVB when he speaks of his game and being the best at the moment, not bragging but speaking as a matter of fact.

I'm very happy for Shane. The couple of times I've seen Shane play I was totally impressed, by both his play and demeanor.
As for the interview, I think it was fine. Give the kid a break, he's 23.
God its been along time since I was 23.

I am pretty sure that the PGA provides media training to all players on tour (Tiger included, although he could sure afford to pay for his own) as do all the other major sports.

Sure Shane might come off as a little brash in his statements, but at this point he has earned that ability by proving that he can back it up with action.

Perhaps his sponser BCAPL could help him with some media training as I am sure they deal with the media more frequently than he does and his actions and words reflect back on them.

Then again if pool was a real sport our governing body would provid media training for all pro players, who is that again?

Me too...long time since age 23. Reading this story took me back to my childhood, 1950's, when hearing aids were radio sized things, a twisted cord leading to the earpiece. An elderly aunt who I loved dearly would reach inside her blouse whenever other relatives would begin arguing. Yup...she was turning off her hearing aid. :D

You'll be in for a pleasant surprise doc. I'm sure there will be a lot of comers from Manila
trying to get some piece of action from Shane. Johnny Archer was on top of the world back
in the mid/late 90s, but it didn't deter the top notch/shortstop players there from
challenging him for some dough. You could also ask Jay that I not BSing you. I'm sure
Shane will win more than he will lose, but to say that no one wants a part of Shane is not
true...

Gosh guys, I've never seen this kid play. But, you guys talk about this kid like he's unbeatable and sent from God himself to rule the pool world. I can't wait to see him in action (although if I am impressed, which I'm sure I will be, I will try not to come across like some starcrossed love obsessed fan). Every time I click onto this forum, someone is obsessing over this kid.
