Shipping a cue?

I don't know FedEx' policy about boxes. I ship my stuff UPS or USPS and I have the luxury to work for a Large format printing facility. If you can get your hands on a paper tube from a 34" roll (3" core) they are very very sturdy and almost impossible for the average trip to crush it.

Say No to FED EX
You can turn the box inside out & use anyone .
I WILL NEVER use FED EX to ship a cue out of 5 time sending & receiving cues through FED EX they only got a signature ONCE !Then they refused to pay for a lost- declared- value cue.
Now I only ship by express mail or priority mail .no problems ever getting payed for a late express delivery.They always have a signature for me.

I had a cue crushed by UPS and USPS has delivered a few cues with holes in the boxes and the ends mashed in, but luckily they didn't damage the cue like UPS did.

Your post is interesting pertaining to Fedex. Fedex is the best by far in my area and i've shipped a lot of cues with Fedex and i've never had a problem. Maybe i've just been lucky.......Tank138 said:

Hi James,
Fed Ex left 7k Worth of cues on my front door step in the rain when it was sent Over night declared value with signature confirmation.
I shipped a fellow Az'r a Scruggs overnight with signature confirmation & they left it at his front walkway.no signature again.
I had a cue shipped to me by a friend Fed Ex priority overnight with signature confirmation .It was lost & they won't pay. They said it was delivered & left at the front door at 7:24 am, again NO signature. The driver changed his story two times about the delivery. Once he said a small hand took the package & the next he said a woman said to leave it.The problem is ,I do NOT have kids & my wife sleeps till 11am every day & will not answer the door for anyone she is disabled.I was en route to my doctors when this was supposed to be delivered & it was not at my door when I got back.
The problem seams to be with their overnight service.
My ground driver is great to leave a note & come back with the delivery for me .
Then my old boss had cigars stolen from sealed boxes after a trade show when he shipped his stock back to himself.
That is why I will never ship FED Ex.

A bigger concern in Winter is ...
... the Severe Weather the Cue must endure during it's journey ... All of the above mentioned shipping methods have proven reliable for me, in over 15 years of shipping 300+ Cues all over the World ...
The major concern during the Winter months is the severe temperatures changes the package has to endure during shipment ... I find it works out best to ship Cues (in Winter) on a Monday or Tuesday (with NO Holiday in the week) ... That way, the Cue will continuously move and not be stored in a freezing cold warehouse or truck for a day or two ... Extreme Cold or Heat can be "death" to a Cue ... The same advice applies when having a Cue shipped to You ...

Personally I think the US Post Office does a great job of moving the mail, and when they do loose something, damage it,or screw it up. Their claims people are reachable, and have help me (2) times in many years settling a claim.
Post Office has FREE shipping Tri Angles, and if you Put your Cue in a PVC pipe, wrapped in Baby flannel it is a great shipping combination.
Personally both UPS, and Fed X claim process is no customer friendly. IMHo they will do anything not to pay a claim...

Both times I have shipped a cue I used a cheap (less than $20.00) hard case that I bought for the purpose, the old fashioned kind with the metal buckles. wrapped each half of the cue in bubble wrap put them in the case, and the case in a triangle box. Shipped UPS both times never had a problem.
Ask for, pay for, Signature Confirmation ...
All of the afore mentioned Carriers will get a signature if you specify it (in some cases it costs extra) ... I would never send an expensive cue without some type of signature confirmation ...
Side Note: UPS "lost" a $17,000 package of mine several years ago (during a strike) and it remained "lost" for 47 days ... Magically, it turned up on the 48 day with absolutely NO explanation, and they kept stalling me all that time on filing a claim ...

High dollar cues can only be insured for a max of 5k thru the express mail service & regular priority mail service.
If the cue is worth more than 5k, you can send it Registered Priority mail It can go as high as 25k- & it is cheaper than regular priority mail due to the fact is they keep it under lock & key from the time you drop it off till it is delivered .
It is also signed for at every stop along the way during delivery by a postal employee .
