I have been in alot of shops and the "crap everywhere" is the normal layout. LOL.
I will get you some of mine when I get home. I would suggest Lining the walls with the heavy equipment and making saws and shelving movable if you need extra room from time to time. Big considerations would be your dust collection plan, enough room to feed materials in and out of machines without banging them on something else, power outlets and where you will run cords and FIRE PROTECTION! Chris.

What equipment do you have? I have a 8'x18' shop with three lathes, a belt sander & bandsaw, shop-vac & dust collector. The rear 1/4 of the shop is wood storage on multi-rack shelves. I have no working bench, and do my assembly on my lathe. It's tight, cramped, but easy to keep climate controlled :)

I'm looking into building a new garage type shop that would be 20x20. This would give me tremendously more space for equipment & working room, while my current 8x18 shop can be wood storage. As it currently stands, my home garage makes up for a huge account of my wood stock, and is also where my finishing station is located. Carrying cues back & forth for finish sucks, as does carrying materials back & forth.

Are you not aware of Murphy's law #23. The amount of mess is directly proportional to the amount of space - The more space - the greater the mess.
Also, a clean shop is the sign of a sick mind.

I hope that's not true, Dick. If so, my mind is dying because I keep my shop fairly clean. Dave. B is a friggin ghost, because you can eat off his machines & shop floor!!!

I resent that statement. My shop is filthy and my mind is anything but healthy.

My shop is 21x24.. When I first designed it I built work benches for machines on three of the outside walls and left the fourth for my saws, jointer, drill press, dust collector and drum sander. Sence then I have added a sanding/wraping station, shelving and racks for wood storage and a 12x36 metal lathe. So needless to say even with over 500 sq/ft of space sometimes my shop feels cramped.

everytime i walk into my shop i just shake my head. glad im not the only one. i thought i was. i clean up for 30 mins then 10 seconds later there is crap everywhere again.

i went to home depot an got a bunch of wood and built 2'x8' long tables. they cut wood to spec for free. 4x8 plywood cut in half 2x4 frame with 4x4 legs

each table cost 50$ to make. 2 levels table top and shelf underneath
i have 2 lathes
spray booth
band saw
table saw
grinder
belt sander
plainer ect...

like stated earlier everything is pretty much movable if i need room. my garage is 12x24ish

My shop is 24x24 and it is full. We are just getting ready to break the shop down in the next couple weeks because we are moving for a bigger shop. The new shop is going to be 25x50 but I think that is going to be full pretty fast. The shop is always covered in dust no matter how much I clean. I am tired of having to wash my harley everytime I want to ride. I think it works best to put all the heavy machinery on the walls and do shelving and work space in the center. That way the dust can't get to far with a wall behind it. My bike is going to be in a seperate garage at the next place. I want different stations for different operations at the new place.

I've got 1800 sq/ft and you can barely get in the door. I've got 2, 8' work benches that are called Mount Pile More 1 and 2. Any flat surface is immediately converted to a stacking storage device.

shop

I'm quickly filling my recent 12 X 20 metal utility workshop. Ceiling rafters over half full of hanging stock. Glad it's 11' high. Machines around perimeter with two deep and tall floor to ceiling shelving cabinets back to back near one side. Refrigerator shelves (metal) screwed to cabinets at top for hanging shaft dowels. Plenty of overhead fluorescent lighting controlled by separate switches. Magnetic base spotlights at each workstation for more bright environment. Desk height 18" wide table against one endwall and wrapping around corner for 4'. Storage units below and formica tabletop for new small CNC. I have to now throw something out for space to put the frig, sound system, and HDTV. I've got to clear a couple shelves for munchies, too. Football season is back. You have to have some priorities. Right?

My shop is 22x28 with 8 ft ceiling which i should have been at least 10 ft high,I wanted to go 2 story but where i live they wouldnt give me a permit, putting a second floor gives good valuable space for a reasonable price

Ok I'll post a few of my growing mess. I snapped a few tonight and some came out blurry(?) but you get the idea. Chris.

These are of the shower curtain I put up to shield the mill from chips flying from the lathe when I am using a router to knock down squares to rounds. I only fire up the dowel machine if I am doing several pieces at once. I just used conduit and electrical box covers to mount it. It was the best $10 I ever spent.

Holy crap those look terrible. I will get some better ones. I have no idea what happened, I must have hit a wrong button on the camera. Here are a few older pics. These were when I was moving around stuff in the shop and expirmenting with dust collection for the saw machine.

Man it sure looks bad in the pictures. It was mentioned before, I too clean the place up and ten minutes later it is trashed again. I generally run 2 to 3 machines at a time so the place gets dirty in a hurry. I am getting better though. I have been buying shelving and boxes for alot of stuff and am slowly getting more organized. I also have been trying hard to clean up dust and shavings to limit fire hazards. I used to let it pile up and clean it every week or two. I now try to clean up the shavings every night and get them out of the shop whenever I am cutting alot of wood. The one thing I am wanting to get now is a good sturdy desk to use for assembly and inlays. I would like the drawers for all the rings and parts and a storage area for all the epoxy dispensors. All in good time I guess.
