Hey guys I'm 5 6 and i have a Black Boar standert size cue. But what i found out was that most pros do they can shoot with ether arm or with a bridge so i practice that all the time

was that a hint of bragging mixed in with this post?

a black boar huh?

I'm rather tall at 5'7". :D
Actually I discovered early on that many good pool players are short in stature. It seems to be one sport that we of lesser size can excel at. So be comforted by that fact.

I prefer a 57" cue and recommend this size for shorter players. It is the "old" standard size before the 58" cues became popular.

You have gotten a lot of good advice already on this thread, which doesn't surprise me one bit. Like some of them I would recommend you start with a lighter cue, in the 17 to 18 ounce range. It will be easier for you to handle and get used to. Once you find the balance point, you'll be fine. Ask your partner for some pointers too.

Just remember, pool is not an easy game to learn and can be quite frustrating at first. But once you learn to make a few balls it will become much more enjoyable. Be patient and give yourself time to learn. Have fun and keep your head down. :)

Please do not forget that there was a player by the name of Willie M. that was 5'2" and claimed to be 5'4". If I remember correctly he did make a splash or 2 in pocket billiards. No wonder Joey got us confused Jay, when I stopped by Buffalo's to play.

yeah but SBV could give that guy the 7

my fiance's 4'11'' and she uses a regular length mcdermott. Im 5'6'' and ive played with guys as tall as 6'7'' and ive never known anyone to use anything other than a regular cue. Youll get used to it.

no way. if it's not right change it don't adapt around it. sure a sledgehammer will get a regular nail into a piece of wood but why not use a regular hammer

My wife is 5'2 and uses a standard length cue but prefers my 59in Jim White. She says the longer cue helps her reach more of the shots.

As for myself, I'm 6'1 and can not shoot left handed. I used to shoot racks upon racks of balls using just the bridge. I'm very comfortable using the bridge on shots I can't reach.

Willie was only 5'2? Wow.

I'm 5'6" and use a Schon standard 57.5". I have tried 59" but HATED it. Felt like I had all kinds of extra cue to deal with. I'm actually glad to be on the short side because tall guys can look lanky trying to get down to table height....I don't envy them!

the only shot in pool I feel disadvantaged at is the jump shot! being tall is a HUGE advantage when jumping....so, I'm forming the SPAJCA....short people against jump cues association.....charter now forming.....

think the acronym is too long?:D

Sorry to dispute this claim. Willie was the same height as me, 5'6" minimum. Still not too tall. Now Shorty was short! Maybe 5'1" or 2". So are Alex, Marcus, TK from FLA, Parica, Raphael and a few more I've overlooked here. Champions all! None of these guys ever saw 5'4".

take the bolt out and see if yo like that more
He did and it does seem to balance better.

I think the other part of the problem is that I do need a lot more practice.

I may be the worst poolplayer here. :( But we have fun.

Are there any other short pool players here?

Im 5 foot 2 inches and when I use a full sized cue it feels way too long. When I use a kiddy cue it feels too short and I cant reach a lot of shots without a granny stick.

Im not a real experienced player but I enjoy the game and Im sure somebody has experienced this besides me.

Thanks in advance.

im 6 ' 2 and sometimes i feel the cue is way to long , but maybe i had to many drinks lol . the g/f is 5'9 and she took the bolt out of her cue and made some helpful difference . i have even been very uncomfortable on certain 9 ft tables because of the damn way the end caps were made for looks instead if function/

You guys just aren't going to the right pool hall. There's a place in Greenville, SC where the owner (very short guy) has the slate beds of his tables about 3 inches lower than normal. I'm only 5'6" and I wasn't used to having to bending over so far for shots, it was funny. I also learned quick that shooting lefty when I have to can be a shot-saver, and also they make these really nice cue extentions that slide over the cue and acutally feel quite comfortable to use I can't remember the name I leave it up at my pool hall but I will get it unless someone else has the name? It's just a tube that looks like a vaccum cleaner attachment.

I've only seen those cue extenders used on the snooker table. Are things done differently in different parts of the country or countries? I mean bridges can always be used. And at 5Ft maybe 5'1 or 2 depending on heels. I have been dependant on the bridge and comfortable with it for a long time. Ya know back when they had really nice bridges (not metal).I even carry my own bridge. The funky little thing will snap a tip off a house cue. I try not to use it.

I don't know?... They work just as well on any other table and as far as I know are legal to use just about anywhere, unless I read the packaging wrong. I be interested if anyone know an instance where you can't use them considering they work so well it might be the the same fight of the jump cue, only with another piece of equipment.

Three inches is WAY too much. One inch makes a big difference. Use 30" as the norm and measure from there. For instance 29" is quite low, and 31" is a little high. Yes, a two inch variant is HUGE when you're talking table height.

In Japan they have traditionally set the table heights around 29". Short people and all :)

I'm perhaps wrong about the 3" but they are lower and when you are short any difference in height is noticed rather acutely :D

Mosconi was about Jays height, I met him at Hardtimes. Boston Shorty was pehaps 5'2".

I'd answer, but Randy Newman already said it best.

Nah, I'm kidding, I'm sure you have a reason to live. For your cue, try to find one that has a forward balance. Your grip hand will be pretty far from the butt of the cue as worriedbeef pointed out, and a balance point too far back will cause the tip to rise unintentionally if you use an open bridge. Apart from that, it doesn't matter if there's several inches of extra cue behind where you grip it. As long as the balance feels right, you can use a full cue with no problems.

-Andrew

Short people got... no reason to......... Short people got... no reason to liiiiiivee! Randy put your teeth back in.;)

Until my last growth spurt I was 3 foot 4 inches and had to make a running leap to see and shoot over the rail. lol
