Nice Challenge.

It appears the one ball is on the rail, touching the five along a plant line to the diamond as shown.

Hitting the one ball into the rail can make it sink in and come back into the 5 ball to make the plant on the 8-9 combination.

Right english and draw will help, including to avoid the scratch. The harder the one ball is hit, the greater will be the variation.

See diagram.

I would guess at least 95 percent of the members here would recognize this 9-ball shot. We are pool fanatics here. You will have to come up with something a little better to intrigue this crew.

Personally, unless you were absolutly sure, I think this would be a better result.

LOL none of you guys even got it right so far. That shot about pressing the one into the rail, please try the shot on normal cloth (not too fast, not too slow) before you post it as your answer. You cannot transfer enough energy onto the balls to pocket the 9 ball without sending a ball off the table and fouling.

I'm still waiting for the correct answer, one that is MUCH easier.

Well, I know these eyes aren't as young as they used to be, but to me , the one-five-eight-nine combo looks dead. That reduces the problem to how to hit the right part of the one while generating enough power to make the combo. One way would be to aim at the right-hand point of the side pocket and, with pace, carom the cue ball square into the one, pocketing the combo.

That's right, it's a duck! Quack Quack

You are correct sir. You can also make a single object ball in the left corner pocket by doing that. It is nearly impossible to make this shot by hitting the one ball on it's right side to deflect it into the cushion and then into the frozen 5 ball, because when it goes into the cushion, it throws the 5 off it's path, and just by hitting it full on, you can't generate enough speed to pocket the 8-9 combo.

It's a variation of an old trick shot. The one and five can be moved down a couple of inches and still make it. Or the c/b moved much more to the left if the 1/5 are moved down.

That's a cool shot. My first thought was to hit the one first, as posted. Imonna have to give that one a try. Thanks.

I'm going to give myself 1/2 credit. I didn't know exactly why I said I'd duck, but I did say I'd duck. :D

And you have to remember that even if the 1-5 combination is dead, the direction the 5-ball takes after impact depends on where you hit the 1-ball. The 5-ball is easily thrown off-line because the throw effect. That's why it's more useful to use the side pocket point to hit the one full in the face...

Hitting the side pocket point is the only way to do the shot. Pressing the 1 into the cushion throws the 5 way off line. There is only 1 way to make that shot, and that is by using the point of the cushion, which was the answer to the "shot trivia".

I guess it comes down to how you see the diagram you set up. It looked to me like the plant was lined up about one diamond off.

Sure would be tricky coming off the point without practicing the shot a few times.

Exactly my point about ducking.
